My wife and I were lucky enough to be there for our 20th anniversary. The entire experience was awesome. Knowing it was a special occasion they were kind enough to put us in a quiet area of the restaurant making the night truly feel like it was all about us. The server and staff were both personable and skilled at their jobs. The food was delicious. I had their filet, which was perfectly cooked and delicious. My wife had a dish with salmon served two ways and raved about it. I would highly recommend Herbie's.

We had a birthday dinner so I wanted everything to be perfect. The food was very good but we had to fight the flies for it. The room was overrun by sink flies. In addition, there was a terrible odor as we walked in the front door. Herbie's has always been a favorite but will be off my 'recommend' list.

Herbie's is one of our favorites but this most recent trip was a disappointment. My wife and one other member of our party ordered the same dish and both came out lukewarm, at best. The maitre d' was very accommodating and apologetic in promptly taking the entrees back and even provided a small appetizer to "tide you over" until the dishes were returned (classy). Unfortunately, when the dishes were re-served (and they were prepared fresh, not just heated up) they were, once again, barely warmer than before. At that point, my wife and our friend decided to just eat their dishes rather than ask for a second "re-plating". All the right steps were taken except the final one. Again, let's chalk it up to an "off night".

Good food and great service. They were very accomadating, asking if there was a special occassion for our dinner, did we have any kind of food alergies. They to send a little something for you to try as a special treat. (Some sort of little pickle wrapped in froshuto, that was really good). Highly recommend the chocolate fritters for desert, and a side of ice cream is a must. You have to put a spoonful of ice cream with the fritter, OMG it was good.

Herbies has long been a local favorite of mine. Imagine my surprise when receiving what was supposed to be an heirloom tomato caprese salad which included hard tomatoes and little other flavor. Next the main courses were delivered for my three other guests. Two enjoyed the chicken and filet melas they ordered and the third thought the short ribs looked and tasted as if they were cooked the day before. My seared tuna arrived 10 min after everyone else was served. It was surprisingly lacking in any flavor and after two bites I sent it back. The waiter handled the situation in a quiet manner which I appreciated yet for Herbies this was a total miss dining experience.

Comfortable seating streetside despite the extreme heat. Cold beer and chilled cocktails with smoked trout and savory pancakes appetizer were delicious. Still a classic and have been dining there since the original Balaban's.. Just had a fabulous dinner with an old friend who was formerly from St. Louis and visiting from LA, she suggested this spot as another previous fan of Balaban's and it was perfect from start to finish.. We started off with a Caprese salad which was a seasonal special, then shared one of the dinner specials which was a Dover Sole, prepared whole and deboned table-side.. Both were excellent choices and prepared to perfection.. Couldn't have been happier with anything at this long time establishment (even though it has changed hands when the original owner passed away), a true gem in the CWE with some of the original staff still working there. You won't be disappointed!

My wife and I celebrated our 22nd anniversary here on the recommendation of a close friend. This is our first visit to this establishment and all I can say is it won't be our last. From the service before we arrived all the way through to the end I can't say I hve ever been treated better. They called me a day in advance to confirm and told me they understood it was our anniversary and would take care of us, and they did. Food was top notch and had to take it home because it was larger portions than we usually eat when we eat out. Service was beyond good. They were very attentive with the appropriate amount in interaction. I also loved the valet service and that one of the valet's plays lacrosse is awesome.

My wife and I had a casual Friday dinner in the Bistro - a lovely setting with friendly service. But, it wasn't quite perfect - The Blue Point oysters were plump and firm, but not particularly briny (my salt phobic wife actually took a shaker to a couple of oysters). More important, they weren't very well chilled...The trend continued with a flatbread - nicely done, but not particularly warm when served. So, it was very nice to be in the CWE on a warm summer evening, with nice wine and service, but, it wasn't quite perfect...We'll be back, but we encourage Herbie's to fix the little things.

Herbie's is a great place to have an evening with a friend. The menu is limited but the cheese plate and salads were just perfect. We were able to visit for two uninterrupted hours. The Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc (last bottle of 2013) was just what complemented the cheese and salads. Thanks for another good time at Herbie's.

The whole restaurant runs smoothly and everyone works together to insure a delightful dining experience all around! I've been to Herbie's three times, and on the second and third visit, the food wasn't very good. The lobster man-n-cheese was mostly pasta, maybbe 3 tiny pieces of lobster, too much garlic. The vegetable lasagna wasn't particularly tasty. Scallops were good, service was great.

For this particular visit, my companion and I were simply in the mood for a great burger, and that's exactly what Herbie's delivered. Appropriately-sized burger with slab bacon and cheese on brioche, plus THE best fries in St. Louis: double-fried and crusted with salty Parmesan. The rest of the menu is great, but don't ignore the "simple" items.

Son-ion-law ordered a rib eye steak and we are not sure what was serviced...but not rib eye. Mostly fat. I wanted to send back buy my daughter did not want to cause any disturbance. • Beautiful Space Wasted
    NickNameVIP

The restaurant occupies a beautiful space that has a long and illustrulious history as the former site of Balaban's. Unfortunately, the charm stops with the classic bistro atmosphere and the history. Seated on the bistro side by the open windows, it quickly became apparent that the space hasn't had a proper cleaning in years. There was a general sense of disrepair and neglect, nothing foul or terrible, just a lack of attention to an otherwise beautiful space. While the minor flaws of the interior can easily be brushed off as "shabby chic," the quality of food on the brunch menu is simply inexcusable. Everything we ordered was as bland, uninspiring and poorly presented as on our previous visit. There will not be a third. Very disappointing.

We made our reservation at Herbie's as part of a visit to St. Louis. It was a 2 night retirement celebration trip. The Herbie's staff called us to ask for seating preferences. We ended up at a great table for two with open windows by the sidewalk, and they started us off with complimentary prosecco to honor our celebration. The waiter was very helpful and professional, and there were so many great entrees to choose from. Our scallops and Mahi Mahi were cooked to perfection, and the presentation and sides were delicious. You can't go wrong with this restaurant choice.

We are frequenters of Herbie's, and on this occasion, our guest was a well-known chef/owner of a five-star local restaurant. The service was a little "off" -- delays that were unnecessary given the few diners that night. Our guest had two shrimp dishes and enjoyed them very much (whew!) but my partner and I ordered beef dishes (he the filet, me the burger) and both were significantly overcooked. I also noticed that Herbie's has changed from using a gourmet brioche bun for to a pedestrian bun that wasn't very fresh. (The fries, however, were spectacular -- best in St. Louis.) When Herbie's is good, it's great -- but there's a consistency problem (chef? front-of-house? both?) that is a little troubling.

The one-page menu the waiter handed us was promising, but then he began reciting the list of off-menu items for the evening. After full five minutes of nonstop talking the barrage finally ended. I admire the ambition, but this comes off as both amaturish & pretentious. If off-menu is going to be their style, they should spend the time & dollars to print a daily menu. After the epic recitation, the waiter disappeared. We cooled our heels for 30 minutes waiting for him to finally come back for our order. Two of us ordered rabbit and one ordered filet. The rabbit was very good. The filet was no better than could be had at a chain steakhouse.
