Diner Reviews
  • "Awesome restaurant!! The food was great!! There wine list is exceptional."

  • "My wife and I had a casual Friday dinner in the Bistro - a lovely setting with friendly service. But, it wasn't quite perfect - The Blue Point oysters were plump and firm, but not particularly briny (my salt phobic wife actually took a shaker to a couple of oysters). More important, they weren't very well chilled...The trend continued with a flatbread - nicely done, but not particularly warm when served. So, it was very nice to be in the CWE on a warm summer evening, with nice wine and service, but, it wasn't quite perfect...We'll be back, but we encourage Herbie's to fix the little things."

  • "Herbies is amazing! Been there several times and simply love it!!!!! Nothing ever negative to report about it, however there was a bachelorette party dining there.....if your a bachelorette party do not dine there; unless your going to be quiet like every other patron there."

  • "Good food, like the main dining menu better than the bistro"

  • "First time we had been there. Food was great. Had the filet and wife had the lobster make n cheese. The appetizer was also fantastic. Waiter was great, would def done there again. We sat in the dining area."

  • "Herbie's is a great place to have an evening with a friend. The menu is limited but the cheese plate and salads were just perfect. We were able to visit for two uninterrupted hours. The Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc (last bottle of 2013) was just what complemented the cheese and salads. Thanks for another good time at Herbie's."

  • "Everything thing was perfect from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. Our server Josh was terrific. The young man who was helping him kept our beverage refills prompt. The whole restaurant runs smoothly and everyone works together to insure a delightful dining experience all around! Glad they had the chilled cucumber soup on our visit as it was an old favorite from the Balaban's days."

  • "I've been to Herbie's three times, and on the second and third visit, the food wasn't very good. The lobster man-n-cheese was mostly pasta, maybbe 3 tiny pieces of lobster, too much garlic. The vegetable lasagna wasn't particularly tasty. Scallops were good, service was great."

  • "very fun neighborhood with lots of great before/after options. this place was average with a good menu variety"

  • "Loved the good, the view , the service & the people watching also in the indoor/outdoor eating area"

  • "For this particular visit, my companion and I were simply in the mood for a great burger, and that's exactly what Herbie's delivered. Appropriately-sized burger with slab bacon and cheese on brioche, plus THE best fries in St. Louis: double-fried and crusted with salty Parmesan. The rest of the menu is great, but don't ignore the "simple" items."

  • "We had reservations for 6-15-14 for a praty of eight. Celebrating my daughter and son-in-law's visit to St. Louis from Geneva, Switzerland. Son-ion-law ordered a rib eye steak and we are not sure what was serviced...but not rib eye. Mostly fat. I wanted to send back buy my daughter did not want to cause any disturbance. A very dissappointing evening. Don't thinkyou want to publish this review."

  • "The ambiance is delightful-the cafe is quite European- and the staff is very good. We were disappointed in the small Belgian waffle and the extra hard English muffin at the bottom of the Eggs Benedict. A few items on the bill didn't match the menu prices."

  • "The restaurant occupies a beautiful space that has a long and illustrulious history as the former site of Balaban's. Unfortunately, the charm stops with the classic bistro atmosphere and the history. Seated on the bistro side by the open windows, it quickly became apparent that the space hasn't had a proper cleaning in years. There was a general sense of disrepair and neglect, nothing foul or terrible, just a lack of attention to an otherwise beautiful space. While the minor flaws of the interior can easily be brushed off as "shabby chic," the quality of food on the brunch menu is simply inexcusable. Everything we ordered was as bland, uninspiring and poorly presented as on our previous visit. There will not be a third. Very disappointing."

  • "The three of us had the scallops and the short rib - all prepared perfectly. The waitress was attentive and friendly, the room was beautiful. Very positive experience - highly recommended"

  • "We went because we wanted to try beef wellington, it was not the favorite menu item on the table. But that may have just been preference. Our meat was cooked to perfection, and the whipped potatoes are awesome."

  • "New menu was delicious. More seasonal and fresh. Updated tuna and salmon preparation. Loved the smoked trout salad. Old stand-by of morel mushroom pasta did no disappoint. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Dinner was well on its' way to being great. The morel pasta appetizer was outstanding. Salad was great. Service was very good. Then came the entrée; Blue Crab. Unfortunately it was overcooked and had an aftertaste that was hard to describe. We will go back."

  • "We made our reservation at Herbie's as part of a visit to St. Louis. It was a 2 night retirement celebration trip. The Herbie's staff called us to ask for seating preferences. We ended up at a great table for two with open windows by the sidewalk, and they started us off with complimentary prosecco to honor our celebration. The waiter was very helpful and professional, and there were so many great entrees to choose from. Our scallops and Mahi Mahi were cooked to perfection, and the presentation and sides were delicious. You can't go wrong with this restaurant choice."

  • "We are frequenters of Herbie's, and on this occasion, our guest was a well-known chef/owner of a five-star local restaurant. The service was a little "off" -- delays that were unnecessary given the few diners that night. Our guest had two shrimp dishes and enjoyed them very much (whew!) but my partner and I ordered beef dishes (he the filet, me the burger) and both were significantly overcooked. I also noticed that Herbie's has changed from using a gourmet brioche bun for to a pedestrian bun that wasn't very fresh. (The fries, however, were spectacular -- best in St. Louis.) When Herbie's is good, it's great -- but there's a consistency problem (chef? front-of-house? both?) that is a little troubling."

  • "The one-page menu the waiter handed us was promising, but then he began reciting the list of off-menu items for the evening. After full five minutes of nonstop talking the barrage finally ended. I admire the ambition, but this comes off as both amaturish & pretentious. If off-menu is going to be their style, they should spend the time & dollars to print a daily menu. After the epic recitation, the waiter disappeared. We cooled our heels for 30 minutes waiting for him to finally come back for our order. Two of us ordered rabbit and one ordered filet. The rabbit was very good. The filet was no better than could be had at a chain steakhouse."

  • "Food was good, waiter was a little aloof( seemed a bit bored) We sat outside which was nice. The West End atmosphere is great! My biggest complaint however, was that booking on line only allowed us (on a Tuesday night) to reserve a time at 8:30 or later. When we got there, there were very few people and we could have our choice on sitting anywhere. We could have just walked in and would have been able to come earlier. So check with the restaurant if you want an earlier time."

  • "It was a nice evening out. Our waiter, Wayne, was fantastic. He was able to suggest and describe the wines with great ease and perfect detail. The food was nice and the portion sizes were great. It was a nice evening. We were not rushed - which as really nice. The chocolate fritters were a great final suggestion - from Wayne of course. Herbie's never disappoints as far as food or specials. :)"

  • "Our experience was the worst we have ever had at Herbies and it was made worse because we have always liked the restaurant and the experience did not meet our expectations. Our waiter was very pleasant but the service was terribly slow despite the restaurant not seeming to be overly crowded and the quality of the food was marginal. At 6:30 on Mother's Day evening one doesn't expect a good restaurant to be out of certain types of lettuce. My wife spit out a Hearts of Palm and was not wowed with her Salmon salad. Despite having great previous experiences at Herbies it may take a while to overcome Mother's Day."

  • "First time here and we enjoyed it. Service and food were outstanding. Great service from the time the reservation was made throughout the dinner. Definitely will go back."

  • "Usually a go-to for both food and service, this time we had several bumps in the road. Super s-l-o-w service & overdone steaks. As new filets were brought to the table (meaning two of our party ate alone after we were done!) we were told that they would be removed from the bill. Bill arrived, showing one charge for two filets, one credit for two filets, and another charge for two filets. Manager explained their accounting necessities. Whatever...two plus two minus two still equals two, right? She never grasped it. I didn't expect two free steaks, as they did correct the problem, but when I'm told they won't be on the check and they are, then they play hocus-pocus on that check, it irritates me."

  • "We are regulars at Herbie's for dinner, so booking the Mother's Day event seemed natural. The buffet just didn't live up to their normal standards. I don't think they skipped on expenses (smoked salmon, mussels, shrimp), it just felt like it was a lazy effort. Nothing special or notable. For instance, one dessert? Compare this to the Chase, which always goes all out for Sunday brunch and costs about the same. I'm not saying anything bad about Herbie's for regular dinner, which is terrific. Avoid the lackluster effort for events brunch buffet, though."

  • "We have been to Herbie's several times now and we are never disappointed. I did notice a few of the menu items have changed, but I only tried the scallops which I enjoyed. Our server was great as well... they usually are friendly and attentive. This time we sat outside in the bistro which is "inside" but along the street. On nice days they open the windows so you can enjoy the weather. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a nice evening out or a special occasion."

  • "Good food, cool interior, great service! We sat in the main dining room on a Sunday evening. There were only a couple of other tables so it was very quiet and almost private. I would definitely return, and would like to try their other dining room options as they offer different menus depending on where in the restaurant you sit."

  • "Our brunch was excellent, the coffee is some of the best we've tasted. Sitting with the open windows but not out on the street is good. "

  • "Food was awful. Barramundi special burned to a crisp, lobster crepe fishy and rillet no flavor. Margarita flatbread good as well as cheese/ charcuterie Service by someone with little experience who brought drinks for 2 of the four and another 10 minutes for the other two diners with the incorrect order Waiter was asked after the first two drinks arrived where were the other two and he answered that the bartender was busy. If the setting and friends were not so good it would have been a wasted evening "

  • "The restaurant has been one of my favorites for a number of years now and it still serves some of the best food in the city of St. Louis. If you are looking for a place to go for a special night out, Herbies won't let you down. My recommendation (if you like food with lots of flavor) is the Shrimp and Grits. It is awesome and I can't stand normal grits. It is a flavor carnival, you will love it!"
