A word from Herb & Soul Gastro Cafe & Lounge
Every man, woman, and child needs to eat. Many prefer to eat food that is healthy — but how do you know what is “good” and what is not? Most of us seek out opportunities to buy the freshest and healthiest foods from local grocers and farmers’ markets, but we often give our favorite restaurants a pass on this reasonable standard of food.

At Herb & Soul, we truly rely and depend on longstanding relationships with local farmers and water men in our region to bring you the freshest ingredients that nourish and delight the soul. In our kitchen, you join us in supporting sustainable agriculture that respects the abundance and traditions of the region while helping to ensure its future.

We are a BYOB establishment so please feel free to bring your favorite libation to enjoy with your food. Parties more than 6 are not available online, but we may be able to accommodate you.

Diner Reviews
  • "We took our grandsons to this restaurant because they wanted fried catfish. They were very happy with their food. We have dined here many times and are never disappointed. The chief is not afraid to think out of the box and the result is very interesting, delicious food that looks and tastes great. I had the shrimp and polenta dish which was seasoned to perfection."

  • "Crab Cake - Shredded rather than lump, deep fried, over cooked and tiny. Crab is so delicate in structure and flavor that it just does not lend itself to deep frying. The hoppin' john was perfectly cooked (not too mushy) but the sauce was heavy, lacking in flavor and tasted like it came out of a bottle. The heirloom tomato salad was well presented, but used small, cocktail tomatoes, about 4 of them cut in half spread out across a long plate. I am not a heavy eater, I know it is early in the season for full-size tomatoes, but it was thin. The peach cobbler was tasty and the sundaes around the table were consumed with appreciation. Service was great. We will give it one more try. The music on Sat looks interesting."

  • "Bistro Burger Night (Wednesday nights) was divine. There were nearly a dozen burgers to choose from--with huge variety in meat (or non-meat!) and in culinary themes. I had the "Seoul Burger"--a bison burger with ginger aioli and kale kimchi. Both of my dining partners had the lamb burger, which included tzatziki, cucumbers, and mint, I believe. The french fries were hot out of the fryer and clearly hand-cut. We also ordered a some hand rolls and the kale salad as appetizers, and both were uniquely delicious. It's the little things that this restaurant does so well--duck fat vinaigrette on an otherwise-simple salad? SO GOOD! Tonya also made some gluten-free beinigets for me. After having nothing donut-like for 6 years, I was in heaven!"

  • " We went to celebrate our anniversary and my birthday. It was a great night. Live music and good food. In addition to good service. It had a great lounge feel with out having to go into the city to find. Great for a date night or girls night out."

  • "The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the outside appearance....its not bad but not what u expect but once u enter it's nice food is great dinner for 2 was abt 60 bucks for 2 entrees drinks and desert peach cobbler and vanilla bean was to die for.....love u Heather S."

  • "It helps that H&S is about 5 minutes from home... but I would drive 50 for this food! Everything is delicious and creative. On our most recent trip, we had excellent service, and even a visit from the chef. We can't recommend this place to enough people. Be sure to try the Herb & Soul Rolls and Chicken and Waffles, even if you share the appetizers all around your table! (A BYOB restaurant is also a fantastic find, and helps keep the bill from creeping too high!)"

  • "Southern Panzanella Salad Was perfect beginning to stave off hunger. Wagon Wheel Farms Lamb Chops, roasted pepper spoon bread and kale was flavorful and filling. Peach Cobbler topped with ice cream was just the right combination of sweet and flavor. Every dish was delicious and the portions were perfect! The jazz band, Blue Spiral, was excellent! I will definitely visit again!"

  • "Absolutely loved the chicken and waffles, the homemade biscuits, agave water, steak and duck fried potatoes. Desserts fantastic! Beignets were enough to take home. Less powdered sugar than Cafe Du Monde but delicious!!! French toast tiramisu topped with bacon was also great!!!!"

  • "It was not a great experience- no consistency! 6:30pm reservation and out of two entrees already!? The server said it was one of the breaks of "Farm to Table" dining! No not really!"

  • "The menu choices were limited. Food was good and hot. More choices are needed for dessert. I will be back! "

  • "This is our third visit and this restaurant just never disappoints. My husband started with the Fisherman Stew which was particularly delicious. I ordered the Flank BBQ Steak with Fried Rice which was really great - packed with flavor and cooked to my exact request. I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh lemonade which was infused with ginger and rosemary. My husband ordered his favorite - the Fried Chicken with Mac and Cheese. Our waiter Brad was fantastic! He is knowledgeable, always has good suggestions and is very efficient and attentive. All of the other staff is friendly and attentive as well - generally stopping at tables to check in with everyone. I highly recommend this restaurant. Food is great at good prices and you can BYOB."

  • "After having tried carry out and delivery from Herb & Soul over the past year or so, I finally had a chance to dine in, and we had a fantastic time! The staff sparkles with courtesy and enthusiasm, and the menu is chock full of delicious choices. The chicken & waffles are heavenly, as are all of the other small plates we tried, and the Pork Tenderloin special was one of the best pieces of pork I have ever eaten. The desserts were also tremendous, and I can't wait to come back. Getting a table can sometimes be tricky due to space limitations, but it is well worth a little planning ahead. Also LOVE that it is a BYOB!!"

  • "This was my first visit; it was on Easter Sunday. It was like being at a friend's house. Very cozy, friendly staff and I loved the music. We did not order from the Easter brunch, although it looked amazing. I had eggs over easy (best I ever had) with hash browns, bacon and sweet potato waffle. My son and daughter-in-law had chicken and waffles (beautiful presentation) and said it was wonderful. Grandaughter had a grilled cheese and it was no ordinary grilled cheese (she loved this). Once again, the staff was great."

  • "The food was good and the waiter pleasant. The one thing that bothered us was the menu on their web site said the cork fee was $3 for up to two bottles, $1 for each additional bottle. When we got to the restaurant the menu we got had changed, it was now $3 a person, which is an extraordinary fee. We had talked about going back the following weekend with friends but realized the fee would be $12. We won't be going back unless they lower this outrageous fee. We would like to support local businesses but they have priced themselves out of our reach. Pity."

  • "I have had better fried chicken at Royal Farms and the beignets were doughy. Didn't make a reservation, but they had all but three tables empty. Still had to wait for a table, and no one else came or left while we were waiting. Not worth wasting your money."

  • "The food was really good here. The chicken and waffle appetizer is phenomenal. My husband ordered the old bay fried chicken meal. It looked amazing. The mac and cheese side dish is really good. Everything is fresh and home cooked. I personally wasn't impressed with their home brewed sweet iced tea. But, the lemonade was better."

  • "Have been wanting to try Herb & Soul for a long time and finally made it in with two friends last Saturday. We were greeted warmly and our server was very nice. We started with the Herb & Soul rolls and the Farmer's rolls, both delicious. The table raved about the breads/muffins that came with dinner. Our entrees were the Butter Poached Shrimp, Shrimp and Grits, and the Fried Catfish. The shrimp were enormous and came head-on. This was a little messy for the (blackened) Shrimp and Grits, but delicious nonetheless and they were perfectly cooked. The hostess came by, asked if the head-on shrimp were an issue and said that they can be requested without. Dessert was salted caramel ice cream, bread pudding, and beignets. Loved it. We'll be back."

  • "The food was perfect and the menu has many varied and interesting choices. Sadly a few things that were recommended to us were no longer being served since they were seasonal and the menu will be changing. Our server was knowledgeable and helpful and also very funny. He did seem to be the only one serving so as the evening got busier, he was a little less efficient but still fine. Parking is not the greatest because you have to use the neighborhood and as it becomes more popular, I think the neighbors will be unhappy since rowhouse street parking is already a challenge in the area. But it is well worth it."

  • "Had to get the chicken and waffles, right? Wish I didn't. Thin, flacid strips of dry breast meat. Waffles were pretty flavorful though. Indian taco was very greasy and difficult to eat. I suppose they forgot to drain the fry bread after frying. They also forgot to use fry bread. It was more of a fried wonton wrapper. They accompanying curry mayo added a nice touch. To say the decor was eclectic would be an exaggeration. And the overweight male server? Please learn the menu."

  • "We went for brunch and had a great meal that was perfect for a wide range of ages 5-75! The food was very good the server was helpful and the kids area was great. Plus the kids mac and cheese was real mac and cheese."

  • "I was disappointed with the dining experience at Herb & Soul because the entrees were not what I had ever tasted before. The Paella hardly had any seafood and the highlight of the Jambalaya was 85% penne pasta! I literally had three tiny pieces of what appeared to be some type of sausage, which I had to look for to find! I realize that every restaurant and chef may have their own spin on recipes, but this was a huge disappointment to say the least. The only thing that saved this disappointing experience were the fresh salads, but I won't be returning to this restaurant."

  • "Awesome neighborhood find. Love the sweet potato biscuits with butter - delicious! I had the shrimp and grits for dinner. Flavor was amazing but the shrimp was a little overcooked and grits were very dry. My husband had the rosemary chicken and loved the flavor but, again, the food was dry. We had the beignets trio for dessert, they were the best part of the meal! We loved the bluesy music which played in the background and the quiet atmosphere. The service was great and very accomodating. We will go back! (Especially for the beignets!)"

  • "Have been enjoying dinner at Herb & Soul since Restaurant Week 2013 but just ventured in for brunch for the first time. Where in the world have biscuits with duck confit gravy been all my life! Or a crispy eggplant benedict? Chocolate beignets with agave-sweetened whipped cream? A breakfast sandwich with housemade kale and rosemary bread, creamed cabbage, turkey sausage, provolone and a perfectly fried egg? What the what?"

  • "My mind keeps wandering to Wednesday night's burger and fries! More than 10 types of burgers to choose from---all local, organic and amazing! Had the lamb burger with cool cucumber slices and a garlic mint yogurt dressing PLUS the perfectly spiced jerk chicken burger. We did not try the milkshakes as we were saving ourselves for the beignets and lemon meringue bread pudding! Been here twice already this week!"

  • "I loved the relaxed feeling of the restaurant and the service was excellent. Our server was friendly and courteous the entire time. The restaurant is BYOB, which I didn't mind, at all. I ordered the beet salad which was absolutely awesome. I also ordered frog legs. They were lightly battered and flavorful. I also had paella, which was unlike any I have ever had. It was flavorful and I would even say delicious but very different, almost a little too different. I guess I would describe the recipes as somewhat eclectic. It was southern cuisine with a very, very different fusion/twist sort of thing. I highly recommend the restaurant and will definitely return, in the near future."

  • "I love that this is hidden and eclectic restaurant, both the food and decor. It has a comfortable and casual atmosphere. I have enjoyed the live jazz on more than one occasion and have never felt rushed by the staff. The food, upscale southern soul, is delicious, you can tell the chef takes his time in creating this dishes. The Herb & Soul roll is a fun and creative appetizer of kale and jerk chicken served as an egg roll... Fantastic! I have to say that I love greens, good southern greens, and this is one of the very few places I will order them. Herb & Soul's greens are not bitter, over cooked, or loaded with grease which is a common find. I highly recommend making reservations if you plan to go on a Saturday."

  • "Excellent menu offerings that do not disappoint when they meet the table. The interior decor and ambiance defies the area and you forget that you're in Parkville."

  • "When we arrived at 6pm, there were very few diners. By the time we left, the place was filling up, and for good reason! The food was great- we got herb and soul rolls, jerk chicken wings, fried chicken, crawfish risotto, and pork belly sliders. Everything was magnificent. Our server had a good sense of humor and was energetic."

  • "Went to Herb & Soul with a Living Social Coupon to try it out. Online reservations were quick and easy, received a confirmation email and reminder email. We went at 5:30 on a weekday hoping it wouldn't be that crowded and it was perfect, not every seat was taken when we arrived. The Host was extremely nice and courteous, Food was excellent (got the fried chicken platter). We spoke to the Chefs wife who was very pleasant and told us the history of the place and that she made the desserts. Would definitely come again, maybe on a Sat night to hear the live music or maybe Sunday brunch."

The service was Excellent; Gabriel couldn't have been friendlier or more Attentive. Answered all of our questions about the dishes. Very diverse. Soul food but many other options as well. Interesting dishes and very generous portions. Would go back in a heartbeat."
