The name Helmand comes from one of the most beautiful states in Afghanistan. It is best known by it"s river "Helmand River" which flows through the desert region, providing water diverted for irrigation.

Helmand Palace is owned and operated independently where you can taste Afghan's most famous and delicious dishes, soups, and vegetables. Our popular entrees include char-broiled leg of Lamb marinated in puree of onion, sun-dried baby grapes and garlic, served with sauteed eggplant and pallow rice or homemade pastry shells filled with onions and beef, served on yogurt and topped with carrots, yellow split-peas and beef sauce.

Tasty food. Smaller portions then I expected for the price. Dark inside. I've had similar quality food for cheaper elsewhere. The complimentary warm bread with the 3 dips was fantastic.

Food and service were excellent. Large, flavorful portions of unique Afgani delicacies made Helmand Palace a great spot for dinner. The roasted pumpkin appetizer is not to be missed and the lamb kabob was outstanding. We ended our meal with baklava, homemade, dense with nuts and honey, it was the best we had ever eaten. This is a wonderful restaurant with food that is unusual and well-prepared.

Helmand Palace is always a great deal: delicious, hearty food at reasonable prices and with great service. Everyone at the restaurant is friendly and helpful - they help make it a great experience. We've had several different items off the menu and nothing has disappointed. My favorites are the cauliflower appetizer and the mourgh challow.

The menu offers delicious Afghani food and I have enjoyed everything I've tasted. I am from So. Cal.but my son is in college in San Francisco so I visit a few times a year. I eat at this restaurant every time I visit San Francisco. It isn't in a restaurant district so it isn't crowded and there has never been a wait. The food is excellent, the service is very good and friendly.I found out about this restaurant from my sister who lives in Hawaii but used to live in the San Francisco area. It is a very small restaurant, so I wouldn't recommend showing up with a crowd without advance planning- but it is very cosy and would be great for a romantic dinner. It is also easy to get to on public transportation. A rare find!

We had a three generation Christmas dinner here (ages 26-87). It was a big success. The food is outstanding. It was a new cuisine for us. It had elements of Persian & Indian, but was still uniquely Afghan...complex and delicious. We particularly recommend anything with lamb or pumpkin.
