This restaurant is a chef owned business who really cares about what he puts in front of his guests! I rate it as one of the top 10 restaurants I have ever eaten in....and I have traveled all over the world! What a treasure! My wife and I have been there at least 20 times by ourselves and with friends and each time the food quality and service have more than met our expectations. Of course, we have developed some favorites, but it has never missed a beat no matter what we eat and we do try new items.

We enjoyed the scallops with a deconstructed fried rice and beef special with a marsala wine sauce - we finished every bite of both entrees. Somehow, we managed to also consume a dessert - some combination of peanut brittle, mousse, homemade ice cream, torched marshmallows...incredible. We noticed several restaurants along the street and mentioned that we might bring some friends to Midway for dinner. They suggested Heirloom. We made a reservation for the following evening. Three of us had the Halibut. It was delicious. The holdout ordered chicken livers and said they were the best she had ever tasted (sorry Colonel). Our waiter was friendly, very helpful and prompt. I had the beef tenderloin and It was perfect...looked just like the pictures on the website. My wife had the scallops and they were perfectly done but a little too spicy for her personal taste. Next time we will ask them to tone down the spice a bit..even with that, they were very good. And, it was Wednesday night....1/2 price on bottles of wine. A great unexpected surprise. I subbed the fries for the Arugula salad, which turned out to be a great choice for me. My husband ordered the Warm Spinach Salad with chicken. I didn't try his, but he said it was very good. Each of our group of four had a different entree and everyone raved that theirs was the best (we always do a lot of sharing). I had the halibut and it was served on a bed of risoto that that was just wonderful and covered with a seafood sauce that icluded bits of crab, lobster and other fish. We passed on appetizers in favor of desserts and I can attest that the home made ice cream that night was superb. We understand the chef mixes different flavors each night. As good as the food was, our waiter was the key to our wonderful experience. He was soft-spoken, reserved, unobtrusive and genuinely pleasant to talk with. Set in a storefront facing railroad tracks in this small town between Lexington and Frankfort (hence, Midway), Heirloom is sparely but elegantly appointed, with little to get in the way of the light streaming through the ceiling-to-nearly-floor windows. The menu is not extensive, but every dish is a work of art. It reminded me of a local eatery here on the Delaware/Maryland border, the Fair Hill Inn: locally sourced ingredients creatively prepared to take the dish to the next level.
