A word from Hearty
Set in a storefront in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, Hearty boasts a menu and design evocative of the warmth and comfort of mid century America. A hand crafted mahogany bar is paired with sea-glass subway tiles and exposed brick. Walls of burnt orange and lime set off a wall-mounted fireplace and bespoke stained glass art.

The vision for ‘Hearty’ is to honor the foods that have become a part of our American culture while contemporizing them for the modern palate. Chef Dan Smith of Food Network fame offers Tuna Noodle Casserole updated with Seared Ahi and Sage Cream Egg Noodles and a Rabbit Sausage Corn Dog with a rich Ale Syrup. 'Hearty' is proud to offer a wine list comprised solely from domestic vineyards, a Craft Cocktail Menu and American Microbrews.

'Hearty' is that rare restaurant that appeals to both the gourmand and the kid in each of us. "Comfort...revisited"

I went here for a $65 a person dinner with a group of 4. There was a prix fixe menu with a variety of options to choose from. We all chose something different, and we were all very disappointed with our food. For the price we paid, the portions were small, the chicken and porridge was dry, the brisket was pure fat, the salads were incredibly tiny, as were the desserts. The menu came with only one complimentary glass of champagne. Three of us don't drink alcohol and were not able to refill our juices or sparkling waters without a charge. I have no plans to go here again and do not recommend this. May have been one bad night, but dang. I am so severely disappointed. :( I had heart GREAT things about Hearty. Didn't measure up for me.

This is our favorite neighborhood restaurant, but our dinner was continually interrupted by a child blowing a horn directly in my ear. I complained and was told hopefully he'd wear himself out. For $140 we could've gone anywhere. We took our third course to go as no adult would take the horn away from the child. Apparently the restaurant had large amounts of a particular virile blue cheese to get rid of, put a slice on my beautiful chicken and ruined the entire dish.

We were impressed. The brunch was notably tasty for all 5 diners. The dishes had a nice dash of creativity without being too far afield for a brunch. Drinks were good if you want to add fuel to last nights fire.

The menu has great choices. They take traditional food like "tuna cassorole" and prefer it fancy. Very tasting. The drinks are quite different as well. Not too much to choose from and they only have wine in bottles, not by the glass.

I hadn't been here for some time, but every time I'm here I think I need to come back again soon. Our waiter, James, was so personable and friendly and helpful. And when he needed to get advice from the bartender, we wasn't afraid to do so. Our entrees were wonderful (as always), my scotch and our wine choices were perfect. Gotta get back soon!

Used to live near Hearty and went almost every week for Brunch. Service is always friendly and impeccable. The changing menu always keeps things interesting, so I've rarely ordered the same thing twice. Even though I live on the east coast now, I still eat there whenever I'm in Chicago. On this latest visit, I had a reservation for 8, 2 friends bailed, but someone else in the party had invited four more friends, making it a party of 10 on a busy Sunday morning brunch. The host and servers accommodated us easily and didn't drop a beat even though I had no clue what was going on.

Hearty has re-imagined classic comfort foods and peasant dishes and made them fit for kings. They have a rotating/seasonal menu and craft beers so you will be tempted with something new each time you visit. Their wait staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about appropriate food/drink pairings. The only downside was that the tables are very cozy...meaning they are very close together. Don't expect a very private romantic evening. It was also a little loud. Still, I'd go back for more.

So, we were in the neighborhood looking for a foodie recommendation. Hearty's website looked great with great reviews on its new take on comfort food. We sat outside and started with two great cocktails. However, after that everything fell apart. The waiter was great and had lots of recommendations. The appetizer, MC2, a fried take on macaroni and cheese was ok. The noodles inside were lukewarm but the cheese was melty. Salads were ok. Waiter said the ribs were to die for - they were not. They were again lukewarm and gray, in color. They definitely were not fall off the bone type. Very unappetizing. The mussels were awful. Many were either just bad or overdone and inedible. The sauce was watery with orange slices to boot.

Overall our waiter was very slow and forgetful barely checking in on us. Then the food took over 45 minutes when the place was not full. Great, our food finally arrives, right? Nope...my mother and I has cold eggs, potatoes and a rock hard biscuit that was probably sitting under the heat lamp for 30 minutes. The one nice thing I will say is the host was very nice and accommodating, allowing us to move from outside to an inside table. Not recommended!

Love the option to be able to make brunch reservations. Interesting menu...not a lot of variety but usually solid. Good option for the neighborhood although experience can be hit or miss. Often they are understaffed, and food always seems to be lukewarm at best. The biscuits are more like hockey pucks, which makes eating their 'pork belly sandwich' (which is on a biscuit) a complete failure.

We went to Hearty on a Wednesday, because they have all you can eat mussels and frites. We love mussels, and Hearty did not disappoint! The broth was light and herbaceous, the frites crisp, and the pre-prohibition cocktails were delish and went well with our dinner. We sat on the patio which has a great children's book mural on the wall. It was quiet, though on a busier night it might not be. For dessert we had a ginger snap s'more that was SO good! Highly recommended!

If you have time to be lazy and wait, and not be extremely hungry, great place! You won't even get your Bloody Mary until an hour later and your food two hours later! The funny thing is the server said they were swamped. Inside, half the tables were filled with patrons, and the tables already had food and drinks when we were seated. So who else were they serving that they were so swamped? Always enjoyed Hearty for dinner and brunch, but this was horrible. It is going to make me question if I want to go again. Also, note to the server, if you're going to ignore us for 40 minutes and lie, lie with some integrity. Food will be out in 5 minutes? Try 45 minutes. Restaurant is busy? Really? Because there are a bunch of empty tables.

I had read some stellar reviews of Hearty which piqued my interest, then I read they did fried chicken so I had to go there. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Cool interior and a nice patio so you can't really go wrong wherever you sit. The menu was simple, straightforward and didn't have too many options which I appreciated. Their fried green tomato caprese starter is delicious and the mozzarella is made in house. Highly recommend that as a starter. My group was there for the fried chicken so we got two of their fried chicken platters which were on special. The greens and mashed sweet potatoes were amazing and they put corn flakes in chicken dredge. Seriously good.

I also go to Hearty expecting something more, and each time I leave somewhat disappointed. The food is okay, but far from exceptional, and it is expensive for what you get. My last visit I ordered the cheese and cracker plate, which was fine, but looked and tasted like supermarket fare. My entree was the homemade Beefaroni, which was small and unmemorable. The cocktails were definitely the best part of the experience.

A friend and I went here for brunch. The restaurant itself is very cute and it wasn't too crowded on a Sunday afternoon. The food tried to be thoughtful, but we were disappointed. The coffee was terrible, the chocolate cherry french toast was dry, and the granola a bit overly sweet. The bacon sausage was FANTASTIC - if you go, do lunch or dinner and order meat. Everything else will leave something to be desired.
