Heartland Restaurant features North American Midwest Regional Cuisine that employs indigenous and cultivated ingredients from the American and Canadian Midwest to create a nightly changing menu that features two fixed price menus along with extensive a la carte selections. The sources for these ingredients are small family farms and artisan producers who practice traditional and sustainable agriculture. Chef Lenny Russo is a 2010, 2011 and 2012 James Beard Foundation Best Chef Midwest Nominee.

  • "We eat out often and my husband was not excited about going to Heartland. He looked at the menu online and thought the main course listing was too small. As a group of 4 we had a great meal! We all ordered a different main course and everyone was very happy.Heartland has a good wine selection and great food.Our server was very helpful with all our food and wine questions.The only area that I could see improved would be a larger beer selection.We Will be eating at Heartland again and I hope soon."

  • "Our first time at Heartland was with a larger group not as accustomed to finer dining. Our server was great. She went through the menu and was eager to explain. Her suggestions were great. The service overall was great. The food matched the service. Great variety for a group with wide ranging tastes in food. Some members of the group commented that it was a bit pricey. Although this should be expected from restaurants of this caliber. Atmosphere, service and food all combine to make this a new favorite when looking for a night out."

  • "Had another great meal at Heartland! The meal was leisurely, perfect for our party of 4 old friends. Most appreciated was the attention to specific dietary concerns including gluten and carageenan. This is one of very few restaurants in the Twin Cities that uses high quality creamery cream without carageenan. Wish all restaurants were this attentive to detail. Chef visited our table to check on the meal and the dietary restrictions in the party, an extra effort that was much appreciated by our entire party."

  • "We went here for dinner not sure what to expect. The menu is cryptic with foods you must look up. This isn't a big deal and is likely part of the experience. A drink from the bar will run you $10.00 and beers are reasonable at $5.00. The food in general can be summed up by saying its good flavor, but very small portions and extremely expensive. My meal was $28.00 for the main course only. If I'd paid $15.00 I would have been unhappy. It just wasn't that good. If the novelty of paying ~$30.00 a plate for locally sourced food that's just ok, go ahead and dine here. If not, go somewhere else where you'll be given an adult sized portion at a reasonable price."

  • "Great food, as expected. Started off wanting more, but as we worked our way through the soup and salad to terrine to entrées, we realized it was perfect. Soup and salad was surprisingly delicious. Terrine was slightly bland for my liking, but not a bad dish. Lamb chop and crusted yellowtail were delicious. Fantastic. Polenta ragu side was amazing. Could eat that everyday. Enjoyed the chocolate dessert. Very rich. Service was poor to begin and didn't show much interest, but got better as the night went on."

  • "My only complaint would be that I wanted reservations closer to 6:30 but couldn't get in until 8:30. A couple in our group dropped out because it was too late. When we got to dinner the restaurant was completely empty except for one table. When I expressed my dismay at such a late time slot with such an empty room. I was told anything larger than 4 was considered a large group don't think I would do online reservations there they could have easily put two tables together for the 5 of us!! Dinner was good and service as well!"

  • "Lamb chop dish was one small over cooked piece of chop, not a meaty rib chop you would expect a restaurant of this caliber. Two salty sausages. Would have preferred just a decent chop. Side dish of sweet potato was too gloppy-sweet swimming in syrup, to eat. Waste of $10 for that, but I guess I should have known. Cassoulet was salty as it had again, those very salty lamb sausages. Pork belly chunks in it were good but largely overpowered the lamb cassoulet. So sad this restaurant is not worth the expense. Winter vegetable salad was served cold. That was very good, as was the green. Salad with blue cheese and yellow beets with blue cheese. Nice dressings on both. But again, inconsistencies did not make it a special night for us."

  • "The last time I went to the Heartland, I was blown away by how good the food was - interesting, delicious and creative. This time I was disappointed by how uninteresting the food was. I had two small plates because there were things about the fixed menu that didn't appeal to me. I suppose I'll give them another try some day."

  • "The food is imaginative and tasty. I have an adventurous palate, my wife less so, but we both felt that a few of the foods were a bit over-seasoned. The five star spectacular service more than made up for this, however. Each plate was carefully explained as it arrived, and server attention was constant without the slightest hint of stuffiness or intrusion. Our primary server, Nancy, was absolutely first-rate. We have recommended Heartland to friends."

  • "We love Heartland Restaurant. The food is unparalleled and the staff welcoming. Altogether, it is a pleasurable dining experience. I appreciate and am very thankful that Chef Russo and his staff have done such a fantastic job of producing delectable meals despite my food allergies (dairy, gluten, eggs, beef). We have celebrated special occasions, such as birthdays and anniversaries at Heartland. We have also gone there date nights. We return because we love the food and the constantly changing menu. The food tastes so exquisite that it actually lifts our mood - not that we are grumpy or downtrodden but more analogous to a "runner's high": one can start out happy but the experience makes one even happier."

  • "Heartland once agin delivered on a flavorful healthy meal. Salads and main courses were well done. The perch entree was excelllent. The Wisconsin Ice Tea cocktail was amazing. Atmosphere was very nice. Only concern was service was inconsistent. Not. Because of the server but beacuse literally this night Saturday March 1st from what we could tell only two maybee three servers were on for the whols place. Our server literally had half the olace. She tried but it was slow and inconsistent which should not be for this level of restaraunt"

  • "I can tell this used to be a fine restaurant. They go through all the right motions. They use fine ingredients. The presentation is what you would expect of a top restaurant. Maybe that is why this was a dissapointment. They seemed to be going through the motions. Wait staff was awkward and preoccupied. Food below average for this category. Overpriced, in fact. Space was noisy and cold. Whatever spark of enthusiasm and energy they had they seem to have lost."

  • "This was our first time dinning here after hearing rave reviews and its safe to say we will be back. The menu offered creative combinations for omnivores and vegetarians alike. We had a variety of items including the cheese plate, soup, steak, chicken, venison, and pork and all were delicious. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the service was outstanding. If I have one complaint its that the desserts are overpriced for the size you receive (cheesecake is silver dollar sized versus a normal piece, fine but not for $10). I would say everything else however was reasonably priced given the quality, ambiance, and local and sustainable nature of the menu."

  • "Service: Our server showed up to fill our order for food and drink and that's about it. We had to flag another person of the staff for another round of drinks and didn't even see our server essentially until the end. As a fine-dining server myself, and especially at this price point...major disappointment. Food: We had three courses, there was about 20-30 minutes between each course. We weren't offered more bread or refills, which may have softened the waiting time. I had the fauna tasting menu and was left hungry. I would have preferred to have a dinner item in lieu of dessert on the tasting menu...sweet potato cheesecake chocolatey crust was dry, fruit compote just didn't complement the cheesecake and was overly-aromatic."

  • "1. Don't advertise that dietary restrictions can be accommodated if you have no intent of doing so. 2. The Chef doesn't manage the dining room--if a guest needs a different entree because of a medical condition then find a solution and tell the Chef to make it happen--"NO" from the chef is unacceptable. 3. Why are you spending 3/4 of your time busing tables instead of managing staff and checking on guests? 4. Apologize. If you can't find a solution for a guest then humble yourself a little and offer a discount on their meal. 5. Honor reservation times. 30 minutes late is like walking into any restaurant and signing up for the next available table. 6. There are so many great places in the Cities to eat, don't bother with this one"

  • "My husband and I dined here for our 28th anniversary. As always, the food was excellent. I had the Rivers & Lakes prix fixe and my husband had the Forest & Prairie. The flavors and textures of the components of my dishes were exquisite and complementary. My husband loves ultra-rare beef, and it was "done" to perfection. The service was wonderful, the ambiance and atmosphere were great, and it was just lively enough. It's on our short list."

  • "i recently ate at Heartland on Valentines day for their special 4 course menu. The food and drink was all excellent. The kitchen was excellent, especially the pastry chef. The pacing of the four courses was perfect for us, but might have been a little on the slow side for others. Our meals were delicious, comforting, and exciting. The issues we had were with the waitstaff and service overall. We weren't asked to check our coats when we arrived, never got service at the bar area while we were waiting for our table to be ready, and our waitress was ignorant bordering on incompetent. Squab is not quail. Tawny port and ruby port are different things; please bring me what I order. Overall though, the food was great and we will be back."

  • "The restaurant is a great example of the "slow food" movement. No, the service is not slow. The food is the opposite of "fast food." It tends to be locally sourced, grass fed, free range, and fresh. The pan-seared squab breast with a parsley root fondant (sauce) and also a preserved cherry sauce was the best dish my wife had ever had in her 60 years. I loved the steelhead trout mousse. Best of all, we felt young and hip because 95% of the other diners were much younger than us!"

  • "A year ago I was treated to dinner at the Heartland by my brother. I ordered one of the chef's tasting menus. It was exquisite. All enthusiasm, I brought my wife to the Heartland the day before Valentine's Day. Neither of us ordered a chef's tasting menu. The result was disappointing. My wife's "Duroc pork chop" was not an exceptional piece of meat. My cassoulet was good, but not memorable. Bread and butter were excellent. Wine well chosen by waitstaff. Restaurant decor was not comfortable and clashed with the old architecture of the building. Service was excellent."

  • "We took advantage of the calm before the storm--a Tuesday night reservation during Valentine's Day week (with Valentine's Day not arriving until Friday). Though the restaurant will be packed for the Valentine's weekend, sneaking in a few days early was perfect. It was relaxed in the main dining room. The food was extraordinary. The wait staff was kind and helpful. It was a night to enjoy a wonderful bottle of wine and the best meals we've had in maybe three years (We have a toddler) all without any sense of time. Unhurried. Undisturbed. And to judge by the looks and laughter of the other diners, they were having the same experience. We really appreciate the Heartland's food and staff. Looking fwd to (and already planning) our next visit."
