Diner Reviews
  • "Food is always excellent. The restaurant space is interesting and unique. But everything about the operation of the restaurant and deli and the delivery and presentation of the food seems to reflect the vision and meticulous attention to detail of the chef and owner. Kudos to him ! The menu contains little of the exotic, mostly locally sourced and familiar choices. But every item is well conceived and well executed. A great choice for an excellent meal every time."

  • "The pork chop was amazing, the vegetables were well flavored and not overcooked. My husband's bison steak was very undercooked, and they never asked him how he wanted it cooked so you'd expect at least medium but it was quite rare. All in all, the food was pretty good, but we spent $100 on food alone (no drinks) and still left hungry. There wasn't much else that interested us on the menu even though we each ordered a large plate. We stopped and got snacks on our way home. I've had better dinners, I probably wouldn't go here again if we're going to go out for a nice dinner. I've had better food for similar prices."

  • "We loved the fact that all food is local, and everything we tried was top notch. The dishes were interesting, and all delicious. Loved the cold asparagus soup and the perch. The pace of dining was perfect for a quiet, special event. We relaxed and enjoyed our meal in leisure."

  • "Heartland definitely lived up to our high expectations! We dined here to celebrate our wedding anniversary and couldn't have been more pleased with the level of service we received, not to mention the delicious food we ordered... everything was fabulous! I can totally see why the chef was nominated for a James Beard Award. We will be back again for sure!"

  • "I took my wife here as a surprise. Food was excellent. Come to enjoy the food, you won't get massive quantity here, but the taste's you'll expereince make it worth the trip. Menu is limited by what the farmers bring in the door each day. I wouldn't bring my kids here as it is a dining experience, not a dash and run. Relax and enjoy."

  • "We don’t dine out very often at expensive restaurants so it’s a few years since we went to Heartland. Nothing has changed: still the same excellent service and incredibly good food. We had an enjoyable dinner celebrating our son’s birthday. The amuse bouche was a gorgeous bite of radish chip similar to a taco. We should probably celebrate more events and more often at this restaurant."

  • "Heartland treated us right! From the greeting and mention of our Anniversary by the Matre'de, to the lovely, tasty and unique prefix menu items, (not always easy- we're vegan), to the desert wine, our visit to Heartland topped off a beautiful evening! After dinner, we wandered around Lowertown St. Paul, and explored the newly renovated Union Depot which is about two blocks away. The restaurant is in a location we don't often get to, and that made our evening that much more unique."

  • "The tasting menu and savory dishes here are amazing--great complex flavors. I'm taking half a point off for dessert because the desserts are nothing special--they need more creativity here. Service was great; the waiter was professional without being overbearing. Overall, probably one of Minneapolis' best as the food here is exciting and local and fresh. Comparable to Restaurant Alma."

  • "Although the food was good, my expectations were much higher. I was looking forward to very tasty and over-the-top. The parmesean chicken was okay but could have had a cheesier flavor. My husband's fish was not very small and he left still hungry."

  • "The kitchen and waitstaff took excellent care of us, which I especially appreciate due to my numerous food allergies: gluten, dairy, egg, beef. Despite those restrictions, everything I ate, from the amuse bouche to the main course, was so exquisite it elevated my mood (no exaggeration). My spouse and I both ordered pork chops but they switched out the mashed potatoes for me and replaced them with addictively-tasty roasted potatoes. Delicious. Our server took time to explain the menu and identify which dishes I could safely eat, and checked in with us from time to time, with being obtrusive. The hostess was friendly, other servers came over to greet us and occasionally assist. They made us, including our little kids (7 & 9), feel welcome. <3"

  • "Fabulous food ! Top notch servers! Even the owner- chef, who was engaged in a conversation with two gentlemen, stopped to thank us for coming to Heartland Restaurant. That caps off a wonderful food experience!"

  • "The timing of the food arriving at our table was very poor. We waited an extremely long time between courses and tables seated after us were long gone by the time we left. The chairs are too hard to spend 3 hours sitting. Not clear if this is a kitchen or service issue. There appeared to be only one server on which is a lot to ask of one person."

  • "Fabulous dinner! This was our 2nd time here and the experience may have been even better this time. I had the amazing NY Strip and my wife had the venison appetizer and a side of polenta. Everything was fantastic. I'll be back!"

  • "Food excellent. Had the prix fixe which was a good bargain. Excellent wine by the glass. Good cocktails and service but far TOO noisy for my likes. Noise level would make me think twice before returning. Was there for a "romantic anniversary dinner", and found it hard to communicate with my significant other without leaning in and almost shouting."

  • "Phenomenal food, great service, lovely ambiance. Truly a gem of the twin cities. "

  • "Picked the restaurant based on the chef's James Beard nomination. Expected a treat but got the mundane. Barely flavored venison rillettes with the "fat" pooled unpleasantly on top instead of combined with the meat, rhubarb tarte with just a couple of strings of rhubarb in a heavy crust with an overpowering shot of truffle oil. "

  • "Everything was awesome. I had the Angus Strip Steak with shell peas, hop shoots, ricotta mashed potatoes, and spring onion sauce. The steak was cooked to perfection, the peas with hop shoots were amazing, the mashed potatoes were a great texture, and the sauce was a perfect complement. My wife had the chicken breast with asparagus, chick pea puree, and baby kale-picked ramp salad. The chicken may have been the best we've ever had at a restaurant. Everything else was good, but the chicken was fantastic. We had the cheese sampler as a starter, which was an excellent arrangement of local cheeses. We also had the honey yogurt panna cotta, and it was a perfect dessert. All in all a very memorable meal!"

  • "we were searching for somewhere new to go celebrate our wedding anniversary and came across Heartland Restaurant & Farm Direct Market, love the concept of local, fresh food and thought we'd give it a try and so glad we did. Started with the service, wish I remembered the waiter's name he was great, very attentive and answered every question we had and had some fantastic recommendations. The food, in short it was fresh and delicious! Amazing food!!! From the appetizer to the dessert it was incredible! What a gem, we can't wait to go back and try it again!"

  • "We were a group of 5 celebrating the twins graduation from college. Heartland was PERFECT! You cannot pick anything on the menu that won't be excellent in presentation and taste. The wine was wonderful. Our server was FANTASTIC! She had answers for every question (which were many) about the menu, method of preparation and the wine list. I cannot say enough how wonderful our evening was. We look forward to dining here again!"

  • "My wife and I went for our wedding anniversary. The food was terrific! Best pork tenderloin I have ever had. My wife loved the perch and her salad. The server was attentive but not over bearing. I would recommend it to friends. Realize it us on the expensive side. Our two drinks, entrees and starts were just over $100. Well worth it!"

  • "Wonderful experience. We were passing through MN and had heard good things about this restaurant--all that we'd heard was true. Everything was amazing. We started with the venison rillette, which was rich but perfectly balanced. We had sturgeon and trout, which were perfectly prepared and then finished with the sponge cake. We will definitely come back...especially since there are small plate options and prix fixe that would be fun to work through. We didn't have wine, but their list is impressive. All of this chef's Beard nominations are well deserved."

  • "Very nice restaurant. The menu was unique and the quality was exceptional. Loved the store attached to the restaurant. The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and timely."

  • "We loved the small, cozy old Heartland on St. Clair and find the new venue to be disappointing. The dishes still use local ingredients but are not so carefully crafted, are on the heavy side and portions are large. The space feels cavernous. It may be best for power lunching, but didn't have the right ambience for a more intimate dining experience."

  • "When I asked a friend to recommend a restaurant in lowertown this wasn't even on her list but I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Inside it has a warm, but industrial feel to it and even had a wall covered in reclaimed barnwood. Loved the feel it gave to the place. Dining room was very spacious and airy with the high ceilings but not cold at all. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the food and custom drinks offered and very accomodating to change requests. Everything we tried was great. I love the changing menu and the staff recommended pairings. Great place that I can't wait to show my friend what she's been missing. This place is going to be crazy when the Saints park is built so get there now. "

  • "Every single dish was perfection! None of us had dined at Heartland before though we all remembered Lenny Russo when he inaugurated Sea Change. While Sea Change was good, was nothing prepared us for the unfettered glorious food we discovered at Heartland. I tweeted every entree. The pork chop, limousin beef, poached duck egg, were beautiful to behold and transcendent in the mouth. Also, the prix fixe dinners were perfect. A New Zealander at the table chose a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc so I have no complaints about the wine selection. Though I ordered no dessert, everyone else's were amazing. Again, beautiful presentations, light, airy mousses, dense dense chocolate, beautiful and melt in your mouth deliciousness. Bravo to all the staff!"

  • "We absolutely loved our meal!! It was my first time there, but my boyfriend has always enjoyed Heartland so we ate there for his birthday. The food was incredible, the staff was amazing and delightful! We thoroughly enjoyed our date and will definitely be back for more. "

  • "With a menu that changes daily (with a few standards), this restaurant serves what's available locally. It is a classy place where the emphasis is on the flavor of the ingredients, not relying on spices to be the flavor profile. The space is lovely and full of character (exposed beams and brick). Service was prompt and friendly and helpful. It is a little spendy, so it probably won't be a daily or weekly spot to visit, but I will definitely be back. This place definitely deserves all the kudos it receives on the various social media outlets."

  • "We enjoy Heartland generally - but the limited choices last week were disappointing. We took friends who had not been there before- they are unlikely to return. We went early which helped the noise problem. Waiter was a bit over the top in educating four "foodies" - but the service was excellent."

  • "Pretty sure I hear angels singing every time I get dessert here. We are not wealthy people, but this is the best special-night-out restaurant than money buys. At a place like Heartland, you can taste and smell and feel what quality you are buying (while other places just cost a lot). We love this place, and we'll be back again and again. "

  • "Second time around and again the service started slow and poor. 30 min to get our wine, mainly because we were never given a wine list. That said, food is great. You can't go wrong here. A lot of effort and heart goes into making each dish taste excellent. anything you chose will delight you. "

  • "I like the focus on in-season vegetables. My husband, however, didn't find much that he liked. This was only our second visit to this prestigious restaurant and, unfortunately, probably won't be back again for awhile because it is expensive and a bit too sophisticated for us. "

  • "This is not just one of the best restaurants in the Lowertown area, but perhaps all of the Twin Cities. The food is incredible, the atmosphere is perfect for a date night, just being out with friends or with a group of people. The staff doesn't rush you through your meal and the portion sizes are perfect for a restaurant of this caliber. This is a must try if you are a foodie, looking for something new or even that hidden gem in an area of St. Paul that is up and coming. "

  • "I ordered the fauna three course meal and it was excellent. The first course included rainbow trout and pork belly. Yum! The second course was beer roast with s multi-grain risotto. My only complaint was the beef was a little chewy. However, the flavors were so unique and interesting that I still very much enjoyed it. Also the cocktails were super."
