A word from Hayes Street Grill
Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

Diner Reviews
  • "We were eating early with a 6 year and the staff was terrific. We told them we were going to a concert and they were totally on board."

  • "Waiter and bus person seemed disconnected from us and from each other. Detracted from otherwise excellent meal."

  • "Still the best Seafood in town. The very best desserts and the finest cup of coffee in any restaurant. Everything is consistently flawless."

  • "I always dine here before attending any event in the Civic Center complex! Reservations are an absolute must for early dining. The staff are all very courteous and friendly, but well aware of your need to make your performance time. The fish entrees are always cooked to perfection...as you request...and the choice of sauce is great to add variety to your meal. The French fries are legendary, although I noted that this time they have cut back on the size of their serving. I love the delicious, crisp flavor of the fries! I can't imagine eating anywhere else in the area when I'm there for a performance. The Hayes St Grill is the number one place to dine!!!"

  • "Hadn't been here in years but was pleasantly surprised by how fresh & delicious everything was. We had sardines for appetizer with a tomato salad that was "summer on a plate" followed by wonderful soft shell crabs & petrale. Had a nectarine & blackberry crisp with Straus family ice cream for dessert- another wonderful taste of summer. Sometimes the old stand bys are just as good as the new hip places!"

  • "I enjoyed the salmon dish -- it was cooked just right to bring out the flavors -- and it went well with the braised greens that I figured out was chard."

  • "Satisfying and fresh in a neighborhood that has many top restaurants Hays street grill holds its own."

  • "This is my go-to choice for dinner before symphony, opera or any other Civic Center event. The menu is very good and very healthy, but they have figured out how to deliver meals to the table in minutes. They always ask if you are attending an event, so they can juggle the service accordingly. The waiters are pros, and many have been working there for many, many years. Hayes Street Grill never disappoints."

  • "We were a group of 8 at Hayes St. Grill to dine before a concert. The service was superb, the service was perfectly timed so that we could have a comfortable meal and still get to the concert venue on time. The food is superb. We all ordered fish or seafood, and each of us was impressed at how beautifully the meal was seasoned and how perfectly each dish was cooked. We enjoyed every aspect of our meal. Thankyou."

  • "The menu is mostly fish. The preparation is better than OK but not excellent. The servers are quite nice. The service is prompt because most people are going to some kind of music event (I think). I like the place, but if it were not convenient to music events, I would be choosing a restaurant elsewhere."

  • "Perfect when attending the SF Symphony. The seafood is outstanding. Salads are also. We feel very comfortable and welcome."

  • "The Hayes Street Grill specializes in Fish dishes and does them consistently well. They are close to Davies Hall and the Opera House and their good food and reputation makes them a sought after spot on nights on which there is a concert or opera."

  • "We made a 5:30 reservation prior to a 7:30 engagement at the Jazz Center. We were finished by 6:45 and decided to leisurely share a dessert. Both entrees were wonderful (soft shell crab and petrale sole)! And the service was outstanding! In addition, the atmosphere was warm and inviting."

  • "We ate before a comedy show @ Nourse theatre (Daniel Tosh). It was very loud when we arrived and hard to get anyone's attention. We sat down and the bar cleared (fortunately as we were seated nearby). Our waiter was great and we ordered. We had 3 different salads (chopped, caesar and calamari) which all were delicious. Our entries were the Niman Ranch steak, Scallops and fishermans stew. We all really enjoyed our entres as they were fresh and flavorful. Dessert was a chocolate sundae and the raspberry torte. A bottle of Au Bon Climat Chardonnay with dinner. A very good experience which we'd reprise gladly -especially - if we could eat in the other room away from the bar."

  • "Hayes Street Grill helped make our wedding day magical. In fact, the ONLY stressful part of the day was traffic, making us so late for lunch we showed up as the kitchen was supposed to close. Instead of turning away, the restaurant stayed open just for us, and we had the most enjoyable private pre-wedding lunch. Unforgettable. Plan ahead and show up early is my only advice. The more time you have there, the better. Loved it!"

  • "Well-prepared, interesting food, solid and always good and large enough portions that I feel like I had dinner. Consistently good."

  • "The food at the Hayes Street Grill is good year round, but we especially like some of their summer dishes -- salads with tomatoes, corn and cucumbers. The tomato salad is not on the menu yet, but the shrimp louis salad was on a bed of lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. The grilled calamari salad was good as always, although I missed the aioli dressing. For entrees, the fish cannot be any fresher. We tried that halibut and the salmon with the buerre blanc on the side. Everything was great."

  • "My "go-to" place for post opera and symphony. Been in existence so long it must be doing something right!"
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "Hayes is a venerable institution in the Civic Center area and for basics it's a fabulous pre and post opera and symphony spot. The wine list has a mark up of at least 100% (which is significant since many of the wines come just down the peninsula or just over the Golden Gate). The food is basic...good but not innovative, Service, as always is impeccable. Noise level was acceptable only because half the restaurant was empty as people could not get near the Civic Center due to Pride Day. Although we've been to Hayes a lot over the years I think we may seek other options this coming Fall arts season."

  • "I cannot have enough of the cold-water fish expertly cooked at Hayes Street Grill. My partner and I love it so much that, arrival time permitting, we drive directly to Hayes as soon as we get our rental. There used to be an empty lot across for ease in parking. But as with the rest of SF's building boom, it is now a commercial building. Fortunately there is adequate parking on Grove where we can safely leave the car with luggage still loaded. Although we come from Asia, where there is a whole lot of seafood, prawns and lobster galore, we just have to have the Sand Dabs, or Artic Char or Sole from Hayes. Perhaps temperate water fish is really different. But I would like to think it is the way Hayes St. Grill cooks it."

  • "A good location for many venues in the area, but the food, service and atmosphere were just OK. The tables are very close together. It was very hot inside with all the bodies packed in cheek to cheek. I don't like having to hear everyone's conversations, or them listening to mine. Service was slow. Server seemed too busy to give good service. Food was OK, but nothing special or particularly good."

  • "As always, Hayes Street Grill does not disappoint. The food is excellently prepared and simply, unpretentiously presented. I love the unpretentious atmosphere, too. The staff is friendly and the service is professional. Diners' time schedules are respected, too, probably due to the restaurant's close proximity to all the performing arts venues. Can't say enough good things about Hayes Street Grill."

  • "Excellent fresh seafood, exquisitely prepared, in a relaxed clean setting. The wait staff asked if we had tickets to the 8:00 show and clearly moved our order to the front of the queue. Each of our dishes was unique and worth coming back for."

  • "I have eaten here before, in fact two weeks earlier and food was great. My salmon was overlooked and not the least bit tasty without sauce, a real disappointment. My friend said her scallops were O.K. Not what I expect. It was pre-opera, so that could be the reason."

  • "My husband and I went for our anniversary, actually as a second choice since our first was booked, but we were not disappointed. My soft shell crab just melted in the mouth. I had doubts about the 'sustainable' swordfish (I hope it is) but my husband said it was delicious and hopes it was sustainable."

  • "I like to have lunch at Hayes Street Grill before attending afternoon San Francisco Symphony. The location is perfect and the food is always good. I enjoy special salads served attractively and sometimes splurge on a delicious dessert. Because I am usually alone I appreciate that I don't feel rushed and can enjoy a cup of tea while reading my book."

  • "They do a simple menu, top notch organic sustainable food, the freshest fish prepared with shocking simplicity, grilled with choices of sauce on the side,...I've been coming here for over 30 years, and it never disappoints. It's a sterling place that in a sea of newer hot spots still stands out as one tied not to the latest fads, but one that delivers a small menu flawlessly. And retains the same loyalty from staff and patrons alike."
