A word from Hayes Street Grill
Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

The Hayes Street Grill is a wonderful restaurant --- don't miss it. Great professional wait staff, with two terrific maitres d'hotel, and a rotating menu that has long honored using local produce, locally caught fish, and California wines (way before it became the chic thing).

We were looking for a restaurant while visiting S.F. That did Seafood. Tried Hayes St. Grill, and found a place that will become a regular haunt on future visits. Restaurant was busy with Theatre crowd before show, restaurant was vibrant and staff was attentive to all in quick time. After peak of theatre rush the place slowed down and became more relaxed. Food was prepared excellently, paella was a right combo of broth to a not overwhelming amount of rice, including a great assortment of shellfish. Petrale sole was a large serving cooked to perfection! Caesar salad dressing is made when ordered a fresh, tasty tang. Overall a place we definitely would go back to.

The fish was well prepared and tasted very good. But they miss on the small stuff. They were out of two of the three brands we ordered from the bar. Out of cherries for a Manhatten. And the bread was served with cold hard butter, an irritation that I see all too often.

The scallop dish was perfect, but the pork chop was disappointingly dry. When the server asked how I wanted it done, I asked for the chef's recommendation, but was so dry that it was tough. I picked this restaurant because it offers sand dabs which one guest had not eaten in years; unfortunately, they were so heavily breaded and scorched that the delicate flavor of the fish was completely overwhelmed. She eats lightly and was too polite to say anything, but after she had eaten as much as she could, I asked for a taste, and I was very disappointed for her. I did not want to call attention to my dry pork chop, and it was really too late to make an issue of her scorched and over-breaded sand dabs. I left feeling let down by an old standby.

Server was personable, recommended some items which were spot on delicious. We were on course for Opera so were served promptly with perfectly cooked fish dishes. I especially enjoyed the grilled calamari which were tender and well spiced - difficult to do with large restaurant and rapid turnover of patrons. My friend raved about her petrale sole. We will return often.

Hayes St Grill has a set menu, on which they print a darkened circle next to items they're out of that evening. At 7:30 on a Saturday evening, they were out of more than half their standard fare, including Petrale Sole, Sand Dabs, and Paella, items I thought to be the best of what they had to offer. When we asked our server what the restaurant was known for, the response was "the French fries"....and even they were average at best. None of the remaining menu items that we tried would be worth ordering again...a very disappointing experience.

Dinner before a show at SF Jazz. Service was professional and competent. Food was of good quality and cooked properly, but no pizzazz whatsoever. $28 for a piece of grilled salmon with some ordinary fries and a few arugula leaves. I could've cooked this meal myself in 20 minutes for far less money. Skip the trifle for dessert -- it tasted like it had spent a couple of days in the refrigerator. All in all, a good location and decent food, but with so many more interesting choices, why bother?

It had been over 8 years since I'd eaten and Hayes Street and was hoping it was still 'near' the quality as it had been long ago. A friend who is a frequent diner at Hayes Street told me not to be concerned. A new romance in my life had never been there or to the Symphony. Sherman paid extra attention to my lady's desires and helped make it a wonderful dining experience.

I always dine here before attending any event in the Civic Center complex! Reservations are an absolute must for early dining. The staff are all very courteous and friendly, but well aware of your need to make your performance time. The fish entrees are always cooked to perfection...as you request...and the choice of sauce is great to add variety to your meal. The French fries are legendary, although I noted that this time they have cut back on the size of their serving. I love the delicious, crisp flavor of the fries! I can't imagine eating anywhere else in the area when I'm there for a performance. The Hayes St Grill is the number one place to dine!!!

Hadn't been here in years but was pleasantly surprised by how fresh & delicious everything was. We had sardines for appetizer with a tomato salad that was "summer on a plate" followed by wonderful soft shell crabs & petrale. Had a nectarine & blackberry crisp with Straus family ice cream for dessert- another wonderful taste of summer. Sometimes the old stand bys are just as good as the new hip places!

This is my go-to choice for dinner before symphony, opera or any other Civic Center event. The menu is very good and very healthy, but they have figured out how to deliver meals to the table in minutes. They always ask if you are attending an event, so they can juggle the service accordingly. The waiters are pros, and many have been working there for many, many years. Hayes Street Grill never disappoints.

We ate before a comedy show @ Nourse theatre (Daniel Tosh). It was very loud when we arrived and hard to get anyone's attention. We sat down and the bar cleared (fortunately as we were seated nearby). Our waiter was great and we ordered. We had 3 different salads (chopped, caesar and calamari) which all were delicious. Our entries were the Niman Ranch steak, Scallops and fishermans stew. We all really enjoyed our entres as they were fresh and flavorful. Dessert was a chocolate sundae and the raspberry torte. A bottle of Au Bon Climat Chardonnay with dinner. A very good experience which we'd reprise gladly -especially - if we could eat in the other room away from the bar.
