A word from Hayes Street Grill
Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

simple menu, grilled fish, pick a fish and a sauce. The dish does not even have any garnish. Fish cooked well but under seasoned and lack of imagination. Based on the clientes, the average age is in 60s. too trendy may not work for them. The service is friendly and causal.

Hayes Street Grill reminded me of the kind of restaurant that my grandparents would go to on vacation. Traditional while tablecloths, autographed celebrity photos on the wall, and an average age of 65+. A good place to get simple grilled fish and a glass of wine.

I have come here several times, almost always choose the pan-fried oysters with coleslaw and outstanding fries and afterward have an excellent espresso and a creme brulee. I am never disappointed. With a good glass of wine, this meal is my idea of heaven. Even the bread and butter served are delicious. Service is excellent. Staff will accommodate anyone who must eat quickly to attend a performance at the nearby Opera House. Noise level is moderate, easy to have a conversation.

Our reservation was on Columbus Day and traffic was very light. We arrived about 30 minutes early and were seated immediately. The food, as always was very good to excellent and the selection of wines by the glass, as always, was limited, but very well chosen. The only disappointment was that as business picked up pre-opera, service deteriorated. Coffee, but not espresso, arrived with desert. When we found we had extra time before the performance and tried to order a glass of port, our waiter was nowhere to be found, even when we asked the busboy to send him over. Prices are still reasonable for the quality, and we saved a bit on the tip!

I've been going to Hayes St. for many years. As long as I can remember, the only sauvignon blanc by the glass has been Honig. With all of the marvelous wines available today, it would make our dining experience more interesting to have some variety to choose from. And the tomatillo relish for our Alaska Halibut looked like it had come out of that container that's been in the fridge for months. They used to give the same amount of fries with a dinner as for a side order but the container for the fries that accompany dinner has changed and is smaller. I had the feeling that the routine was a bit tired. The fish was perfectly cooked, however, and the waiters, who have all been there longer than I've been going there, are professional

Hayes Street Grill has been a favorite for over 25 years. The sea food is extraordinary. The fries the best! And I love the watercress. Drinks are great and good wine by the glass. I'm quite fussy about fish, and it is always cooked to my satisfaction. Highly recommend Hayes Street Grill.

Make a reservation if there is a performance that evening. Bet you could get any table after 8:00 pm on a performance night! Great food - very loud, so not too good for a group larger than 4 I'd say. I've heard they have good service but ours was abysmal at 5:00pm in a pretty empty restaurant. Go figure.

Even though many of us arrived at the same time after the Sunday Matinee, we opera aficionados were all seated within a few minutes. Once seated, my friend and I were soon greeted by our waiter, our drink and dinner orders were taken, and the kitchen prepared our lovely dinner within minutes. I especially enjoyed a perfectly cooked piece of salmon served with delicious braised greens. I'm looking forward to returning to this San Francisco gem.

We were looking for a restaurant while visiting S.F. That did Seafood. Tried Hayes St. Grill, and found a place that will become a regular haunt on future visits. Restaurant was busy with Theatre crowd before show, restaurant was vibrant and staff was attentive to all in quick time. After peak of theatre rush the place slowed down and became more relaxed. Food was prepared excellently, paella was a right combo of broth to a not overwhelming amount of rice, including a great assortment of shellfish. Petrale sole was a large serving cooked to perfection! Caesar salad dressing is made when ordered a fresh, tasty tang. Overall a place we definitely would go back to.

The fish was well prepared and tasted very good. But they miss on the small stuff. They were out of two of the three brands we ordered from the bar. Out of cherries for a Manhatten. And the bread was served with cold hard butter, an irritation that I see all too often.

The scallop dish was perfect, but the pork chop was disappointingly dry. When the server asked how I wanted it done, I asked for the chef's recommendation, but was so dry that it was tough. I picked this restaurant because it offers sand dabs which one guest had not eaten in years; unfortunately, they were so heavily breaded and scorched that the delicate flavor of the fish was completely overwhelmed. She eats lightly and was too polite to say anything, but after she had eaten as much as she could, I asked for a taste, and I was very disappointed for her. I did not want to call attention to my dry pork chop, and it was really too late to make an issue of her scorched and over-breaded sand dabs. I left feeling let down by an old standby.

Server was personable, recommended some items which were spot on delicious. We were on course for Opera so were served promptly with perfectly cooked fish dishes. I especially enjoyed the grilled calamari which were tender and well spiced - difficult to do with large restaurant and rapid turnover of patrons. My friend raved about her petrale sole. We will return often.

Hayes St Grill has a set menu, on which they print a darkened circle next to items they're out of that evening. At 7:30 on a Saturday evening, they were out of more than half their standard fare, including Petrale Sole, Sand Dabs, and Paella, items I thought to be the best of what they had to offer. When we asked our server what the restaurant was known for, the response was "the French fries"....and even they were average at best. None of the remaining menu items that we tried would be worth ordering again...a very disappointing experience.

Dinner before a show at SF Jazz. Service was professional and competent. Food was of good quality and cooked properly, but no pizzazz whatsoever. $28 for a piece of grilled salmon with some ordinary fries and a few arugula leaves. I could've cooked this meal myself in 20 minutes for far less money. Skip the trifle for dessert -- it tasted like it had spent a couple of days in the refrigerator. All in all, a good location and decent food, but with so many more interesting choices, why bother?
