A word from Hayes Street Grill
Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

We have been coming here for years. A full bar with good selection of liquors (I had a 209 gin martini), excellent food, nice and responsive service. The winelist is adequate but not extravagant (about 30 wines), not counting a dozen dessert wines and brandies. It's a white-tablecloth dining area and sound is usually conversation-friendly. Being walking distance from the jazz center, opera, symphony, and SF Conservatory of Music, it's an excellent match for a lot of purposes.

We have dined here many times, and often at least one person in our party has a hard time deciding what to order. The focus on the menu is fish and seafood, and, if one is not a seafood lover, it can cause a dilemma for ordering. This time we were delighted to see some other additions --chicken and meat. We stayed with the seafood-the Opah was brilliantly cooked to perfection, and the portion was generous enough to share. The paella was also good, although the ingredients (seafood, rice, chorizo, clams) were prepared separately, then mixed together by portion and thrown into the oven to heat. This took away from the flavors blending together, producing a somewhat bland dish. On this occasion, we had a theater engagement and had to be finished by a certain time. Staff took great pains to make sure that happened, without rushing us or hovering over us. We even had time for a wonderful dessert! Kudos to Hayes Street Grill--we will be back.

Great place to dine before or after the Opera, Jazz Center or Symphony. HSG is a warm and friendly place with all the ambiance befitting a great musical evening. The fish is always superb with a great variety of styles from which to choose. We go there often and have never been dissatisfied by the food, service and prices.

Restaurant was out of a lot of items. Busboy was keep bringing burnt bread. When I mention I do not like the burnt bread he said he's from Mexico where they would eat anything. I'm not going to spend my money for eating burnt food. Another bold wait that was very rude. Our waiter was always in a hurry in will disappear for a long time. I order stake beef after going to many items that was they were out of it was very dry. Tomato cut the cheese salad was good. Tiramisu was totally melted and was falling apart and didn't tasted like tiramisu tasted like layers of cake with the cream. Manager was friendly and nice

Hayes Street Grill remains one of my 3 favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Their selection of broiled fish is good for my diet (although their French fries, though delicious, are not.) And both at lunch and at dinner, they manage to have constantly-changing items, so that I never get bored with their menu. Despite often being FULL before a performance at the Opera House or at Davies Symphony Hall, the restaurant is never so noisy that diners cannot talk to one another at reasonable volume. And the waitstaff---who have mostly been there for many years---are skilled and friendly at the same time.

Our second time dining at this gem and it did not disappoint! I had the sweetest, most succulent grilled scallops ever and my husband waved about the house-made Italian sausages. The only thing that marred our evening was the fact that my debit card was denied when they ran it as a credit card - not their fault - and when they tried to run it again, the bank "froze" it, even though there was plenty of money on the account. Fortunately, we had enough cash to pay a large portion of the bill and the management was kind enough to let us come back the next day to pay the balance. Not something that would happen at a large chain restaurant for sure! We were able to pay the debt the following evening and enjoy salads and wine at the bar.

We picked this restaurant because we were going to the Opera that evening. The food was fine, but the noise level deafening for the restaurant was full at 5:30 P.M., and the tables are very close to each other. The location is really the only reason we would go back.

We had dinner before the Opera at Hayes Street Grill. This has been my go-to restaurant in the Civic Center area for years and will remain so. Seafood is the specialty and they always have several excellent, very fresh choices. We had a fine plate of oysters on the half-shell, split a fabulous salad featuring grapes, pomegranites and smoked trout, and my paella was first class. My date opted for the pork chop, one of the two or three non-seafood selections, and was thrilled with it. This is an old-school, white tablecloth restaurant that absolutely knows how to do things right. And thank God it has not opted to follow the current trend of hard edge industrial decor, which always equals loud, loud, loud. Bravo!

Drinks and dinner were served promptly and we did not feel rushed at all after dessert & coffee. Our go to place for any event!

My entree - Alaskan salmon with lemon caper butter sauce, grilled greens - could have been better. The salmon was not as firm or flavorful as it should have been. Possibly farmed? And the sauce had had more of a buttery taste than the zing promised by the lemon + caper designation. The grilled greens would have been better if they'd been cooked half as long. By contrast my dessert - a chocolate mousse cake with sour cherries and vanilla cream - was outstanding.

I am never disappointed. With a good glass of wine, this meal is my idea of heaven. Even the bread and butter served are delicious. Service is excellent. Our reservation was on Columbus Day and traffic was very light. We arrived about 30 minutes early and were seated immediately. The food, as always was very good to excellent and the selection of wines by the glass, as always, was limited, but very well chosen. The only disappointment was that as business picked up pre-opera, service deteriorated. Coffee, but not espresso, arrived with desert. When we found we had extra time before the performance and tried to order a glass of port, our waiter was nowhere to be found, even when we asked the busboy to send him over. Prices are still reasonable for the quality, and we saved a bit on the tip!

I've been going to Hayes St. for many years. As long as I can remember, the only sauvignon blanc by the glass has been Honig. With all of the marvelous wines available today, it would make our dining experience more interesting to have some variety to choose from. And the tomatillo relish for our Alaska Halibut looked like it had come out of that container that's been in the fridge for months. They used to give the same amount of fries with a dinner as for a side order but the container for the fries that accompany dinner has changed and is smaller. I had the feeling that the routine was a bit tired. The fish was perfectly cooked, however, and the waiters, who have all been there longer than I've been going there, are professional
