  • "The food was very good but the service was horrendous. We ordered within 5 minutes of arrival and had a concert to attend. Our entrees arrived 1 hour plus and there was no discussion or attention from server on the wait or apology. I dont know how you run a business .. and I would not recommend this to anyone and I will not try any other restaurants by this chef."

  • "We had a great meal. Food was excellent, service well paced and the ambiance was perfect. Not too loud, it was cold outside and felt cozy inside."

  • "We cook much better meals at home. waiter was stiff and just barely friendly."

  • "The service was very spotty from the time we sat down for dinner. The first waiter knew nothing about the wine list and we had to flag down another server to get additional service. The food arrived luke warm and we sent it back. The dinner arrived after retuning it but hadn't change much as it was still luke warm. We did tell the server and the manager came over and explained to us that the kitchen doesn't send the dinners our "piping hot"! Which basically left us speechless. The meal itself was very good but COLD.We felt as if the staff didn't really care about the experience."

  • "Drinks were unusual and very good. Enjoyed the squid, salt cod fritters, gem lettuce salad and gnocchi starters. The roasted mushrooms were outstanding. The lamb shank and flat iron steak were also good. Not good however was the pork shoulder. The meat and the accompanying butter beans were very dry, compounded by little to no sauce. Would not recommend the dark chocolate "candy bar" or the coconut cake. The apple hand pie was our hands-down favorite dessert."

  • "The food was good, but not stellar. Service was a bit slow. Lamb shank was cooked nicely and fell off the bone. Celery and apple soup was tasty, but came from the kitchen in a mason jar which was poured over something (ok, can't even remember) at the bottom of the bowl. A little much? My dining partner had an upscale hamburger which she seemed to enjoy. It was a lively scene with a long, deep bar for eating. Our waiter was very pleasant, and gave good advice for wine, which he clearly knew well. Would be beautiful to sit on the side of the restaurant toward the water - we ended up sitting in the lounge area. Truthfully, would rather go across the street to Bocanova, which is lively, happier and delicious."

  • "Service made this miserable! Showed up 5 min before reservation time, and was standing in half empty dining room for 10 min before anyone even acknowledged us. Was told it would be 15 min so we sat at the bar. Sat there a while before acknowledged and in the interim we had to listen to one of the managers berate the bartender. Drinks were good, but totally foiled by experience. 1 hour after we walked in we were shown to our table. Our server was nice and food was good, but we were already so frustrated with our experience it foiled it all."

  • "I made a reservation for 7 on a Tuesday evening. When we got there, we were still made to wait for about 15 to 20 minutes. The place was not crowded at that time. The moment we were seated everything seemed to flow quite well, with one exception. After ordering a bottle of wine, it seemed like our server had forgotten about us. We had to wait for what seems like eternity (we were very patient though). I could have been upset about it but our server was really nice and made up for it afterwards. He was very patient waiting for seven ladies trying to chatter all the same time. The food made up for the service!!!"

  • "We were able to sit at the Chef's counter and watch the 4 chefs plate the dishes. It was really great to see the plates that we would be eating prepared. The food was fantastic, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Sitting at the Chef's counter, we seemed to be in serving limbo. We had a few different people from the restaurant come by to get our drinks order, food order, but it did feel like we were neglected a bit. It seemed like the assigned waiter was forgetting about us so others had to step in. And there was some confusion over the order because the waiter did not clearly explain a deal we had."

  • "Very good food; wine and beer choice good, but could stand for more selection? Had braised lamb (very good), gnocchi (very good and light, and I'm not usually a gnocchi fan), soup--squash and apple(? I forget) (good), mushroom dish (was ok, nothing great) Atmosphere very good in Jack London Square, definitely a nice place to check out. Was fairly busy even for a Sunday night Overall a very nice experience"

  • "Our evening at Haven was perfect in every respect- and that is why we chose it! We had a party of six with a variety of food tastes and our waiter, Ryan, not only ordered for the table, but clearly explained the delights that he kept bringing. The service was seamless and unobtrusive. We were also greeted by the Manager, Dana, an added pleasure, as we had 4 new folks with us. And the FOOD! everything was well-prepared with obvious attention to detail. We are regulars and of course will be back."

  • "Once again, Haven delivered in all areas. The food, the service, the ambience...all once again were fantastic. Other restaurants should take note how simple it is to satisfy customers by being attentive and caring about the customers."

  • "We were at Haven to celebrate the departure of my daughter back to Chile. We were seated inside at a large round table that was comfortable for our group of 6. Our server was very helpful and attentive especially with the wine service. Overall everyone enjoyed the food. We ordered the gnocchi and bone marrow for starters and enjoyed them both. Entrees were split between the Lamb Shank and the Pork - both were very solid. The Farro side was very good, but the potato side was gummy - would not order again. The noise level was a bit loud (as with most restaurants these days) and there was a mechanical hum that bothered me in the beginning."

  • "We stayed for a few hours because the ambiance was so great. It overlooks Jack London Harbor, and it's a very calm, welcoming, and contemporary atmosphere inside the restaurant, with an open kitchen. The service was excellent. We didn't have to ask for anything; our water was always filled, and our server recommended to us several dishes. The salt cod fritters were so tasty (crisp on the outside, salty and just a tad sweet on the inside), we requested another plate. Their homemade ginger beer made with best juice was also recommended to us, despite it not being on the menu. Excellent. I would definitely come back again, and I can't wait to see how the menu changes."

  • "I enjoyed everything about Haven, the food, the drinks, the decor and ambiance although not perfect, was just fine enough... the service was great until the bill came and the server had made an error, but that was minor and easily fixable.... but the 90s music had to go! It was NOT good 90s music.... At one point, they played Mariah Carey and that was the straw that broke our backs. PLEASE stop playing that kind of music! I'll think twice about staying if that music is playing again. It just didn't fit the atmosphere they seemed to be going for. Why???!!! Why??!!!!!"

  • "The food at Haven is amazing. Between the textures and flavors and innovation I e never had a more delicious meal. The food is the star of the show and the stage is the open kitchen where the real genius happens. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. The only bummer was the hostess didn't offer us a spot at the bar when she was prepping our table. Otherwise a nice friendly hello from the GM behind the bar when we walked in was great. Like I posted on Instagram: EAT HERE NOW."

  • "Went to Haven on a recommendation of a few friends. It was a great dining experience. My wife and I sat the countertop facing the kitchen which made for a fascinating experience watching the chefs and cooks apply thier trade. Both our drinks and wine were good and our server had wine recommendations for our meals. Menu is spare but we found that to be a good thing. Everything we had was excellent."

  • "Haven is a great restaurant - hands down. This was my first visit since the rock-star chef, Kim Alter, moved to Plum Oakland. I miss her food. This chef is good but his food is not to die for. I personally wasn't wowed. I wasn't happy with the table next to the door so the host very graciously moved us to a better table. I found the host and our waiter to be extremely professional and they're actually the reason why I would go back. The food...not so much. I wish it was a little more creative. We have MANY choices in Oakland and ambiance is great but your food has to rock."

  • "Been going to Haven since it opened and generally have had a great experience. This past time was pretty good, but the service and food were not quite up to par with previous visits. Service was slow and the food was good, but not great (at least the lamb shank that I had). I will definitely go back to give it another shot though."

  • "Had another excellent food experience at Haven on Saturday. But the scene was a bit of a downer. First, they could not seat us at the time of our 8:30 reservation, and made us wait in a very cramped area by the bar. OK, so we ordered drinks, and then were told we could not put the drinks on our dinner bill and were not offered a chance to open a tab. Finally found ourselves seated, 20 minutes late at what appeared to be bar tables. We did enjoy a fantastic dinner, and the waiter was great. We had bone marrow, gnocchi, squid, then pork should, lamb shank, trout. And the wine list, though small, was sharp. We had a nice 2007 nebbiolo. Over all, a good eating experience, but they probably need to work out the weekend rush issue."

  • "Loved the cocktails, the overall atmosphere, the food, the service...but the chairs were incredibly uncomfortable. They look nice, but it was impossible to enjoy the meal and conversation because I was so uncomfortable. The 2 other people in my party said the same thing, so hopefully this is something that can be easily fixed, otherwise an outstanding restaurant. 2 of us had the pork shoulder with cannellini beans and the other the flat iron. Everything was cooked to perfection and was very tasty."

  • "A friend up from Socal wanted to try Haven and I was game. Great cocktails and wine list! We got seated at the chef's table which is always cool, I love to watch those guys cook. Service was great, very attentive server & even the hostess came by and we had a nice chat. Started with the bone marrow, we got one piece each. It was KILLER. We had the Monterey Squid, was just ok. Wanna try the Fritters. We both got the Braised Lamb Shank, so tender and perfect. We also ordered the Potatoes and Brassicas for the sides to share. Whatever the sauce is that was with the potatoes was heavenly. The cripsy cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, etc in the Brassicas were so good. I highly recommend Haven for a nice dinner in Jack London Square any night!!"

  • "We were greeted promptly and seated by the window. We ordered drinks and asked for a few moments before ordering food. Fine so far. At that point, our waiter disappeared and after a half hour, we had to ask the water server to find him. He was knowledgeable about the menu and food in general and we were served. The food was good, but not outstanding in any way. Finally, we were presented with another table's bill. No excuse for such poor service. It is the location that will bring people here."

  • "My wife and I finally had a chance to check out Haven. She had the Salmon and I had the pork shoulder. The food was very good. The service was also right on. The cocktails were better still. I think it's overpriced though. The food, while prepared well, isn't extravagant or rare, yet many dishes approach $30. Fancy ham and beans was what I had and it cost $23. The cocktails are also expensive at $11 a pop."

  • "Haven was a pleasant surprise. We were looking to find a nice Oakland dining experience and found it and more with Haven. We were seated promptly with our reservation. Food was delicious. We had main courses of short ribs and mushrooms/grits with a side of the incredible crunchy mashed potatoes. All were excellent. We shared the entire meal which was good because the food was rich (in a good way). Staff was engaging, helpful and timely. Wines by the glass presented a nice spectrum to complement the food."

  • "We have had good meals at Haven in the past, but this time almost everything (exception: soup) we ordered was just fair. I had pork with cannellini beans; my husband had lamb. Both dishes were kind of dull. The vegetables with my gnocchi appetizer were fresh and well prepared, but the gnocchi itself was just average. I hope this dinner was an anomaly, as we have enjoyed Haven in the past."

  • "gave another try cause of new chef. wish this place was better and given the owner had expected it to be. first time under current chef. liked that not as conceptual as previous but nothing really stood out. bar is very inconsistant. from trip to trip either very good or awful. this time not good. house made tonic had weird and pronounced bitter taste. other times too sweat. 1 out of 4 times it was good. moscow mule drink also very bitter not sure why didnt have tonic listed as ingrediant. service simalarly inconsistant although this time was good. trout was good and cooked fine but horseradish in greans surrounding it was not pleasant; also bitter. might have been fine if hadn't already tasted the two drinks that had a similar flavor."

  • "We enjoyed the ambience and décor. Nice Bar area, but the slow service, as seems to be the case in many restaurants these days. Only one bartender. Very Nice Cocktail menu, and good once the drinks arrive. Dinner service was very good, as our waiter was on his game. The Food was good, but not great. Lamb Shank had good flavor, but was not hot all the way through. Sauce on the Cauliflower was salty. The oven roasted Mushrooms w/Grits was very good! I'd go back to try additional dishes..."

  • "From the moment my wife and I walked in, this restaurant did not seem oriented towards us as customers: the maitre d' was harried... we sat at bar waiting (got seated 15 minutes late - they had overbooked V-day reservations)... the bartenders were visibly tense with each other and were surly with us; one shook and slammed his cocktails right in front of us, splashing water on our faces... only several of the prix fixe menu items tasted at all worthy of the $85/head price... there was a rotating whirl of wait-staff bringing us each course - it felt like a cafeteria; one didn't even know what she was serving us. I've never even bothered writing a restaurant review before, but had to say something about this sham of a dining experience..."

  • "Cool space with a nice view of the marina at Jack London Square...the brussel sprouts were incredible, the cocktails were tasty, and the rest of the food was excellent. Service was very good except that our table was very close to the one next to us and the staff kept squeezing between us which was a bit awkward at times. We would definitely return and highly recommend Haven!"

Service was perfect, not to intrusive, but there when needed. The price matched the food. If you haven't experienced Haven, I recommend you take a loved one and enjoy this fine restaurant."
