Diner Reviews
  • "Restaurant is small....barely room to move in the bar....too noises for ant type of conversation. Our waiter was not super attentive. My husband's food was served cold after waiting an extremely long time for our entrees to arrive. Waiter never stopped back to check to see if our dinners were ok. Too many other restaurants in the city for Havana to get another visit."

  • "Yucca was good, the pollo a la caserolla was delicious Friday specials, mojito pitcher was good for $20"

  • "Entree's were tasty. Plantain chips were soft, drinks were blah & dessert was nasty."

  • "Great food (yucca anything and poblano cream sauce, manchego cheese and spinach stuffed chicken), powerful drinks (sangria and mojitos), lively people and ambiance (noisy, fun, and everyone was smiling and having a good time) and the waiter that looked like Robin Thicke (according to my fiance LOL). Reservations are recommended, when we left at 8:30, there was a crowd gathered, waiting to be seated. Will definitely return to dive deeper into the menu and cockail list. Salute!"

  • "This was our first time at Havana. We arrived early so we could sit at the bar and have a few drinks and relax. Cherish was most friendly and very personable. My wife ordered wine and I a Vodka & Tonic. I must say this is the first restaurant we've been to that the tonic came out of the bar dispenser "bubbly". Andy was our server and he was just great! We ordered Crab Cakes for a appetizer which were delicious, served with a black bean sauce and fresh chopped fruit. For dinner we had the crusted Halibut, this was by far the best Halibut we've ever had. Served over a Cuban sauce which accompanied the fish very nicely with a side of mashed sweet potatoes and mixed vegetables. We had the Flan for dessert with coffee which was just excellent."

  • "We came here for the first time on my birthday. The mojitos were made perfectly the food was amazing and the ambiance was typical Cuban style. I was very pleasantly surprised."

  • "My 12 yr old son and I went here after a matinee. We got there early (before our reservation) and they seated us early. The service was EXCELLENT!!! Since it was our first time there, our waiter helped us to make meal choices that we were both very pleased with. The Coconut Mojito was soooooo delicious. We definitely would go back again!!"

  • "Havana never fails to serve up some tasty food! Its not the fanciest place and they don't try to over do things and I actually appreciate that. Its just tasty food and drinks! I love going there. I definitely recommend the tostones, the steak jibarito, and the yuca al mojo. Can't go wrong with a pitcher of mojitos either!"

  • "We dined after the St Patricks Day parade so the bar area was loud and busy as expected. The food was very good and reasonably priced."

  • "We've been doing pre-theater dinner for 10 years mainly in the loop. Decided to venture further north to increase options. Food was presented unexpectedly nicely as if in a much more expensive establishment. Service was very good. Variety of drinks, including some unusual ones. Prices are decent. - Empanadas - nicely done with a decent amount of filling and not greasy - Rollitos Manchegos - great combination of flavors, especially the poblano sauce - Pulled pork - a little dry, but great flavor - Fresas con Crema was really good, while the key lime pie was so so. Ignore reviews criticizing for not being authentic; Havana doesn't pretend to be just Cuban. Website says Cuban and Pan-Latin inspired, which it is."

  • "The food was fantastic and the service attentive and understated. The overall ambiance was one of a neighborhood spot where good food and conversation could be found in a warm environment."

  • "We went with a group and all of our dishes were excellent. The mojitos were well done as well. I thought this was moderately priced for the quantity of food we were served."

  • "I had never been to Havana before and my best friend and I were looking to try something new. I will eat just about anything and she is a very picky eater so I was a bit anxious when I chose this place but we both left Havana absolutely loving it and are planning to go back very soon. It's a bit small and somewhat crowded but I can blame them being that their food is amazing and their pitchers are a steal. The empanadas are to die for and I haven't been able to stop thinking about them! I look forward to bringing all my friends there and making this our new hangout place."

  • "Been here a bunch of times and it never disappoints. I will say though that the tastiness of the food isn't very consistent. Every time things taste a little different. It's all still good though, just only amazing sometimes. And while the service is usually decent, this time my service was sub-par. we had a group of 6 and barely saw the waiter as well as our food took a long time to come out. I'll still definitely be coming back though. :)"

  • "I appreciate the variety of the menu- I enjoyed a Cuban pork dish and my friend had a steak dish. Both were very tasty and generous portions. The volume was loud yet my friend and I could hold a conversation without having to shout. There is a parking garage directly across the street, which is convenient."

  • "The chicken enchiladas were delicious, as well as the coconut mojito! YUM! I plan on trying everything on Havana's menu!"

  • "Great place! Had an early reservation on V-Day and the restaurant had cute V-Day touches- balloons, confetti, hearts. It was a perfect place and not over the top lovey dovey. There was a V-Day dinner special, but we ordered off the menu. The food was great, the service was too and you can't beat that Cuban music playing!"

  • "I didn't know about Havana but saw that it had availability when looking for somewhere to go on OpenTable. I'm thrilled that we found it and we have been there twice in the past two weeks. Fantastic food, terrific service and an energetic environment (loud but good) with Cuban music. The Carne con tequila and Rollitos Manchegos (chicken stuffed with spinach and manchego cheese on poblano cream sauce) were both excellent. Coconut mojitos were great too. Highly recommended."

  • "This is one of my fav places for lunch. I think the food is outstanding and the prices are very reasonable. And the housemade habanero sauce (which you have to ask for) is amazing."

  • "Havana is small and noisy with a congenial atmosphere. Staff very friendly and attentive. The signature pork dish was ok, not fantastic as the waiter suggested. The calamari appetizer and seafood dish with curry were also good but not great. While everything we tried was acceptable, I was hoping for a new, inpired taste I hadn't tried before. This was my first time dining in a Cuban restaurant and I was looking for something new and that is the way Havana fell short for my taste."

  • "I have been to Havana once before. Both times I have been there the food and people have been amazing! Would recommend to anyone and everyone!!"

  • "I always take friends who are visiting Chicago and staying downtown to Havana for dinner and they always love it! The staff are very accommodating and the menu has so many delicious options. The ceviche is always fresh and the drinks are creative."

  • "We asked our server the top picks on the menu. I went in thinking i would get either pork or chicken and based on her recommendation i ended up Ropa Vieja and my wife chose the Havana Roasted Pull Pork. We were both overwhelmed. I can't wait to go back and try more! My original intent was the Cuban Sandwich but decided that was a lunch item so went meaty for dinner. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "dinner was not that great. i had eaten there about 6 months ago and it was delicious. not sure what happened, but everyones meal was just ok."

  • "Havana is an average experience of Latin American cuisine. Not bad, not great, somewhere in the middle. And for the price, that is the biggest problem. I expected better for what I was paying. From the small mojitos to rice that's too dry, tostones that are too ripe, the balance was just off enough to steer me away from visiting again."

  • "Great service & food! I will definitely be back to experience some of the other menu items that looked & smelled delicious."

  • "My Burger was not cooked fully even though I requested well done."

  • "This was a quite disappointing experience. Although my wife's food was good, mine was not very good. The waiter never came back to our table after she took our orders and I could not get her attention to order another drink. She showed up finally ater the bus boy had cleared our table."

  • "Went here with a large group of 10, and had no problem making the reservation. The food was delicious -- everyone loved their meal (oh my the fries!) -- but what really put Havana over the top was the service. The waiter was so nice and attentive, handling our large party with ease. Always nice to find a place with true character among the bar scene of River North."
    Dined on 12/28/2013
  • "Food was amazing. So many different items on the menu -- can't wait to go back and try other things. Their black bean soup and Ropa Vieja was so good. Only disappointment was the salad with shrimp -- basically mixed greens with some shrimp thrown on top. Very boring. Also -- VERY LOUD restaurant. Hard to carry on a conversation! Still highly recommend restaurant!"

  • "This is my 4th time to Havana and once again I was not disappointed. From the chips and guac to the after-dinner drink, everything was excellent. It's not a quiet place, which we like. Lively and friendly would be good descriptors. Our waiter was helpful and friendly. Flavors of the food were delightful. We can't wait to dine at Havana again!"

  • "I had never heard of this place before, but when our other restaurant was booked and we found it, we felt lucky. It has great food (including for vegetarians), service, and reasonable prices, especially considering the area. I would definitely recommend it to others who are in the Loop/River North area and looking for a good restaurant that's not too expensive."

  • "Maybe it's just luck of the draw of what you order. I went with someone of Cuban descent and he didn't recognize much on the menu as authentic. Is a burrito Cuban? Fries with the Cuban sandwich? We had expectations of fare more like you get in Miami. Anyway, not bad. I had the empanada trio, an appetizer, as main course, and liked the variety and uniqueness of flavors. The plantain chips were crisp. We ordered the full order of tostones as appetizer. They are heavy A and can fill you up. Desserts were 2 thumbs up: guava cheesecake and Cuban rum flan! Cafe cubano also spot on. Atmosphere, decor and music does reminisce of a warmer climate."

  • "Guacamole is ordinary, but the entrees we had, paella and pulled pork are worth going back for. Booths are a little tight for four, and we found it noisy - might be better on a weekday. Desserts were also excellent. Wine list is affordable but sparse."
