Diner Reviews
  • "The in-laws were in town and visiting from the East Coast. They wanted to dine somewhere near the water with a view of the sunset. The Hau Tree Lanai was a perfect setting for them. The food and drinks were good. Pricey, but a nice restaurant with good food and good service. "

  • "Everytime I visit Hawaii I always make a reservation here. I have never been disappointed and the food is always exceptional. The service is top notch. I have many food allergies and require gluten free-they handle both with such accommodation."

  • "My third time here. This setting is almost magical, buried under the 150 year old trees. This restaurant has wonderful food, exceptional service, and such a romantically spot. It truly deserves a five star rating. Treat yourself you will be glad you did!"

  • "Egg benedict was very delicious. I´d like to go again. But pancake and waffle were normal,I thought."

  • "We ordered 3 entrees of opakapaka steamed. Very pricey flavor good but extremely over cooked. The fish was extremely tough and a waste of $$$. I love steam fish. I was so excited we all ordered it and was extremely disappointed. But the view. Priceless."

  • "We have gone to Hau Tree for years and continue to love the setting on Kaimana Beach, and the cuisine. The service however, was very disappointing tonight. The waitstaff were inattentive, with long wait time to take orders for each course, and even though we asked for a specific omission on the child's order, the Oder came out incorrectly. The waitstaff at times stretched past other diners at our table to place plates, and just seemed clumsy in their service. I hope this is an anomaly for this otherwise great restaurant and that service will be improved."

  • "Hau Tree is outdoors, shaded by beautiful Hau trees. Beachside at Kaimana/Sans Soucis beach. Great spot. Food and service excellent. Recommend the shrimp salad an the loco moco."

FREE?と聞けばよかった。 サービスはお客様も多いせいか手薄だと感じました。 コーヒーのマグに口紅がついてたり、オーダーをなかなか取りにこないなど。 しかし、目の前は海が広がり、料理景色雰囲気最高です。"

  • "Only one thing that we were dissatisfied was the host to take us to the table. I know he was busy to manage the customer to the table but he didn't say anything to let us know or say something to us at all. He seemed like he was ignoring us when we get to the restaurant. He could say something like Just a minutes or I will assist you soon. Just because we are Japanese Doesn't mean that the tourist from Japan. We live here. That was very rude."

  • "I had a late breakfast at the Hau Tree Lanai restaurant while in Honolulu, Hawaii. Everything was so nice. It was Spring Break, a busy time, and still the restaurant and the staff were great! Reservations are highly recommended at this gem. Try their poi pancakes - not to be found everywhere. I shall definitely eat there again!"

  • "Portuguese Bean Soup should be served hot. Mine was luke warm. It's hard to mess up a club sandwich but it just had no flavor and the turkey was pressed meat. Waiter was lovely but had too many table at the time to do a good job with our table. No offer of beverage. No refills on water. Overall, I was disappointed from what I have remembered in the past. I have been going to this restaurant for 30 years or more..lost track of how long exactly. I feel the quality has slipped."

  • "My husband and I had a wonderful dinner here. It had been raining prior, so tables and seats a little wet. But we didn't mind, staring at the beautiful sunset was worth it. Great service, delicious food."

  • "Make sure you have a reservation. The most amazing sunset over Waikiki Beach. Superb food and excellent staff. The only concern is that it is part of a hotel so it's location is not readably visible from the street."

  • "This restaurant has a lovely ocean view which is particularly nice at sunset. However, the food and service, while okay, are not worth the cost. You are truly paying for the view. I would not recommend this place as there are so many other choices in this price range that have better food and service. But if you are dying for a romantic sunset dinner, this place can deliver. Just check the weather forecast first so as not to be disappointed by the sunset."

  • "A party of 4, we were warmly greeted and promptly seated. The service was attentive, though food coming from kitchen was a bit slow, but all worth the wait. Two ordered steaks and raved about the quality, and two ordered local fish that was simply delicious, clearly high quality, well prepared. Good mixed drinks as well. A bit expensive, but for a premium spot with quality food, this is to be expected in Wakiki. I also heard that breakfast here is amazing. Will give that a try in the future."

  • "Fantastic place on the beach. The atmosphere is great with most tables under the large Hau tree. Staff was fantastic. My Dad had the salmon and called it the best he's had. Saying a lot since he lives in Seattle. Roger, our waiter new the menu and gave solid advice. We had a great night at the Hau Tree."

  • "We ate at the Hau Tree lanai twice, both times having invited friends to join us. We have also eaten at the Hau Tree on previous visits to Honolulu. On both occasions in February 2014 we were disappointed in the quality of the fish dishes. They were too salty, and either over cooked and dried out or mushy, as if the fish were not the freshest possible. Thus, though the evenings were very pleasant, we were disappointed in the food in comparison to what we remembered from past times there. We ate fish elsewhere that was superb- fresh, perfect texture and flavorful."

  • "Our last night in Hawaii was spent enjoying the best meal we'd had since leaving Australia a month before. This really is a complete gem of a restaurant...wonderful in all respects. The service was impeccable, the setting beautiful and the food sensational. This was our first extended time in Hawaii and, when we next return, we'll make absolutely sure we eat at the Hau Tree Lanai again."

  • "There were 6 of us and two were sitting facing the wall and one facing the stairs, so only 1/2 of our group could even see the ocean view. We had a reservation a few weeks in advance, so a seating of 6 could have been accommodated without facing a wall. The food was so so. The shrimp salad had only 4 shrimp with the tails on. Made for a messy time trying to get the tails off in the salad and I thought only 4 shrimp was really cheap when the price of the salad was $18. One in our group couldn't have starch at all. Asked for veggies instead, chef wanted to charge $4 extra, which was ridiculous. Waiter got his order wrong. Asked for the salmon plate and got Salmon Benedict with potatoes. This restaurant really went down in my estimation."

  • "I value Hau Tree Lanai for its beautiful lanai on the beach with its tables under the trees and therefore a great place to take visitors for a memorable Sunday lunch But for this particular reservation, it had been raining quite hard. None the less, our table was ready at the appointed time and we were seated on the lanai, but under the overhang and close to the inside wall, giving us both an outdoor table but yet dry at the same time - the weather being the only real peril of eating at this otherwise fine restaurant. I had the Portabella sandwich with fries and found it wonderful, while my guest experienced the Loco Moco for the first time, and declared it the best meal he had had all week."

  • "This restaurant is on Sans Souci beach just past the aquarium and a short beach walk from Waikiki. Allow about 15 minutes from the "end" of Waikiki. It's just off the lobby of the New Otani hotel. It's a fairly small place and the outer tables are exposed to rain. We were there on a rainy evening so they were seating only about 2/3 of the capacity, yet we were seated on time for our 7:45 reservation. I would try to get here around 6. The sunsets from here will be wonderful. The lanai is shaded by trees and after sunset the torches are lit. Very nice. There was a guitarist playing who was absolutely superb. Excellent drinks. The portions were surprisingly large but were excellent. With appetizers we were unable to finish the entrees."
