Diner Reviews
  • "If you would eat authentic Japanese foods not fusion Japanese, you should be in Hatcho. This restaurant really give you Japanese homy touch "Izakaya" style!"

  • "Having private room available makes relaxed dinner experience and excellent"

  • "It took us 20 minutes for them to get our drink orders even after getting up twice to flag somebody down. We seem to baffle the waitress by asking for separate checks. They seem to use salt rather than actually add flavor to any food. Our group would rate the sushi at the level of supermarket sushi. To top it off a couple hours after we left I received a call asking if I would give permission for them to charge me more because they did not charge me correctly for the sushi I had. I was astounded after the terrible experience they felt it was okay to call me because they didn't charge me six extra dollars. I could never recommend this place to anyone."

  • "A good place to have Japanese food & beer :) Ambiance is comforting & have traditional Japanese kind of seating arrangement. "

  • "This was my first time dining at Hatcho. I had heard very good thing about the place from friends that live in the area and was very excited to try it, especially on Valentine's Day with my significant other. Sadly, I was very disappointed. My SO ordered the Udon and I ordered the Sushi Plate Combo. The rice for the sushi was very mushy and tasted like there was too much vinegar added. The Udon was chewy like those store bought udon packages. Overall the food wasn't that great, the only redeeming factor of the night was how charismatic the sushi chef was. I told my friends about my experience and they were very surprised. Maybe they were just having an off night and I was just unlucky."

  • "Very slow service, understaffed. The food was good; according to the Japanese person in the group it was like authentic "home-style" Japanese food. There was an extremely loud group in the next tatami room, taking sake bombs (wrong place guys, really), screaming, and banging on the walls. Staff apologized for the noise but couldn't stop it. We had a tofu appetizer, a "gasoline" bento, a selection of four small meals, some sushi, and assorted other food. All of it was very good; the teriyaki sauce was a little overly sweet but really yummy. The beer and wine was mid-grade but very drinkable. The price was average. We live nearby and my BF loves Japanese food so we'll probably go again, but overall we weren't knocked over by the experience."

  • "The family and I had dinner on a Wednesday night. The service was amazing. The food was super tasty and the presentation was spectacular. We highly recommend giving them a try and dinning in the rice paper rooms! Tons of fun."

  • "What can I say? First-rate real authentic Japanese cuisine at excellent prices. The only even mild flaw with our meal was that food came out too quickly, not quite giving us time to enjoy each course. In spite of that, I thought it was a phenomenal meal. Hatcho will replace all of my other choices for Japanese in the South Bay. Why? Because it has outstanding fish to please the sushi lover and it has all the Japanese items anyone would like who does not want to have sushi or sashimi. Proof of the quality? Servers who speak Japanese and more than half the diners were Japanese speakers. That has to be a good sign. If I still lived in the area, it would probably be the only place I'd eat Japanese food or sushi."

  • "Hatcho has the freshest sashimi I have ever eaten in California. Tryout the tempura sea urchin. It's magnificent! The food is comparable to the cuisine that you would have in a Japanese inn in japan."

  • "I went to this restaurant because I want toro sushi. The restaurant does has very good toro sushi. This is the only food is good. The rest is not good. Service was very poor. When I told the waitress that I want toro sushi, she said someone has to take my order. I waited over 20 minutes for another waitress to take the toro sushi order. I told her I would like toro sushi and don't want spicy dish. she recommended a very spicy tofu dish. That was terrible. I did not eat it at all. My boyfriend packed the dish for the dogs. Also, after they served the food. No server has stop by to check on you - for water or tea. I waited so long for the bill, my boy friend and I walk up to the front desk and ask for it."

  • "Overall it's very good, food is delicious. It's a small family style restaurant packed with customers. The decoration isn't super fancy, but the food is comparable to more upper-scale restaurants."

  • "We loved our time at Hatcho! Everthing we ordered was so delicious and incredibly fresh and beautiful! The service was excellent -- we had a reservation and they were very busy but everyone was treated graciously. My husband and I can't wait to go back for his birthday!"

  • "For a simple Japanese restaurant where the ambiance is simple... the food is refined! Excellent quality ingredients, and personable service. Don't be fooled by the tired look to the establishment... if you give them a chance you will be delighted!!!"

  • "If the restaurant is busy service can sometimes be lacking and the orders might be backed up. We came when they were entertaining a large group so they explained to us that the kitchen was tied up, and service was fairly slow as well."

  • "Hatcho is a my favorite sushi restaurant in Santa Clara. The owners are warm and hospitable. There are some tatami dining areas, including a room with a western table for more private occasions. The food is VERY good. I ordered the chirashi. It was well presented (they take it up a notch with the use of Japanese lacquer plates) and the rice was perfect."

  • "Very good authentic Japanese food. Really old fashioned and a little odd, but very typical of what you'd find as a family run restaurant in Japan itself. Come for the food, not the decor. Their deep fried tofu appetizer doesn't sound like much but it is fantastic."

  • "It was a nice japanese restaurant having private TATAMI rooms. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a late night dinning place for group. I like the spicy seafood ramen here for lunch too."

  • "While the food was excellent, they apparently don't check their online reservations at all, and even though I made my reservation around 8am, when we arrived at 7pm they had no idea and never put us down on their chart, so there was no room for us (party of 2). They made up a quick table in the corner for us, but even that took a long time because they had messed up at least 3 other reservations also for 7pm (and small groups, 2-3 people). The food was good, but because they were over-packed (trying to squeeze in patrons whose reservations they messed up) it took almost an hour to get even our appetizer. I will try them again to see if perhaps they were just overwhelmed that day (or had someone less than intelligent handling reservations)"

  • "Having travelled extensively in Japan over many years it was a pleasure to dine at Hatcho. It is very authentic. The decor is odd, verging on tacky, the wait service is a little erratic, with not much English, but the food quality is outstanding. Everything in the last sentence is what you will typically find in a family run restaurant in Japan. For Japanophiles I highly recommend Hatcho. If you want a high-end fancy dinner out this is not for you. If it is the food that really matters then this is definitely for you."

  • "The sashimi, tofu dish, snapper, and chawan-mushi were excellent. We didn't care for the conch - too much of it and no flavor. My shrimp looked and tasted as if it had been overheated before it was cooked. Serving sizes for some of the dishes were too large for kaiseki, which traditionally are supposed to be small tastes of dishes. Some dishes arrived one right after the other, and then there was a spell when we had nothing. We ended up taking food home because we got full at the beginning. A more leisurely time in between might have helped. The staff was warm and amiable. We would come back for sushi."

  • "Real Japanese as opposed to "Korean Japanese" or "Chinese Japanese". Go for authentic food but make sure you know how to order real Japanese dishes. Don't go if you're looking for "chicken teriyaki"."

  • "I haven't been here since 2008, but regret to say the "taste" has changed greatly. Before it reminded me of "Home sweet home, Japan" but now, I think the taste has been "too Americanized". Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the food was bad, just if blindfolded, I would not have thought of Japan. I was glad that they still had good sushi and sake."

  • "Food is great - authentic Japanese cuisine!!! I went there with my 3 girlfriends and my baby. Make a note in the reservation of my baby, and the owner gave us a private room for lunch. Service is very attentive, and love the food - yummy!!! Price is reasonable. We got there around 11:30am & the place seemed empty at first, but new customers kept coming in throughout the lunch period. The only thing is I am not familiar with the Santa Clara area, and took me awhile to find the restaurant since it is in a plaza."

  • "Me and the wife ate there for our 2 year anniversary this week not looking for anything fancy and ended up having a great meal. What surprised us is they have great dinner specials not on their online menu. For example they have a 3 or 4 item choose your own adventure option where you have the choice of all different types of grilled fish, pork, sushi, etc....I had a 4 item dinner special and I chose grilled salmon teriyaki, grilled saba, tempura shrimp and veggies and 3 piece sushi plate which also came with salad, miso soup and rice. It was all great tasting, fresh and very reasonable! Service was a little slow but we were not in any hurry. All in all, everyone there was really nice and the food was awesome. We will be back!"

  • "We often go out for sushi, and Hatcho had some of the best sushi I've ever had anywhere. Perfect salmon, oysters the size of my hand, delicious mackerel...we had a wonderful dinner. I can't wait to go back and try the cooked entrees as well."

  • "Another perfect dinner at Hatcho! couldn't ask for any better, went with my family on my birthday. At the end, Linda gave us a birthday fruit dessert with Chocolate and little candle! so sweet! $300 well spent. best kind of sashimi to die for :-) yummy!!!"

  • "Food was great. Service okay, but, disorganized. Even though I had made reservations two days earlier, the restaurant had not checked "open table" to see if any reservations had been made. At first, they could only put us at a table by the kitchen. Before we ordered, they came back and said a room had opened up and invited us to sit there, which we did. I think they were sorry about not realizing we were coming. Suggestion....if they are going to use "open table" - they need to check it!"

  • "Hatcho is always our first choice when it comes for Japanese authentic food. High quality sashimi( we always go for Chefs Choice Sashimi Plate) that we can't get it better anywhere in south bay and great customer service. My husband and I took our 4 years old daughter to eat our Valentine's day dinner there. It was another great dinner we had at Hatcho. Thanks Linda!"

  • "This restaurant is a treat for those looking for authentic Japanese cooking. I had dishes that I have not been able to find in years (shiokara). The owners are delightful - the chef quite famous in Japan. If you go for the excellent sushi, make sure to order from the kitchen as well to take advantage of the mastery of the chef."

  • "Hatcho is an authentic Japanese restaurant. My group particularly enjoyed the New Year Day special appetizers in the traditional style of Japan, as well as the open sake barrel with the traditional wooden dipper. The entree dinners were excellent and also very authentic."

  • "We visited on New Year's Eve, so it was busy - they could have used extra help. Although we did not request it, we were seated in a private room for 4 which was very nice. We ordered combination dinners - the food was delicious and portions were large. Overall good value. Would definitely recommend and return again!"
