  • Entertainment: Hat City Kitchen is a speakeasy-style restaurant and live music venue. We opened in mid-January 2010 to showcase artists like blues guitarist Billy Hector, Al Gold another regional favorite as well as nationally known artists and guitar icons such as Leslie West of Mountain. Our fall season is almost fully booked with local, regional and nationally known artists, ranging in genre from jazz, blues, rock, acoustic as well as larger orchestras. We showcase CD release parties and other special events.
    Please note: seating in stage area subject to a cover and minimum for live events.
  • Special Events & Promotions: We offer large group menus starting at $20 dollars per person plus tax and gratuity. These are family style three course meals and great for sharing. Please see our website for party packages for details.

At the corner of Valley and Forest streets, (459 Valley) in the shadow of Our Lady of the Valley Church, HAT CITY KITCHEN is a new restaurant in an old building with a new vibe.

By focusing on a simple menu, we have the ability to perfect an artisanal process, creating the best food imaginable. We have created an experience that has broad appeal to families,traditional food lovers and critical Epicureans at an affordable price."

All profits from Hat City Kitchen go to support revitalization of the Valley neighborhood; true to Orange's history as a small city where culture and commerce meet in the street. Hat City Kitchen is a happy collaboration of art, urban planning, food and music, playing for the neighbors late into the night.

  • "I like HCK...the entertainment is always great...the food NOT always good...lumpy grits is NEVER a good thing...I mean SUPER DUPER LUMPY and runny..I sent them back...and if that was cheese mixed with it...it look extremely UNappetizing... also, the menu is stale now.... I think it could use some revamping... probably won't return for a while..."

  • "Unfortunately they were not prepared the day I went for brunch. They had one server, who was pleasant enough, for the entire dining room which may not have been that bad since it was buffet style. However, they never had enough food out and what was out sat cold. The fried chicken as well as the gravy had an unpleasant warmed over flavor. Fortunately, I was there at night a few months back and the food was pretty good so I may give it another try, but not for brunch."

  • "I love Hat City Kitchen and try to go there to support them at least twice a month, if not more. The food is really fantastic, Louisiana-infused, great ribs, jumbalaya, etc., and, I truly love their hamburgers. Prices are totally reasonable, service is friendly (but not overly attentive). And the music is always great. If you want a quieter experience, sit in the restaurant. If you want to be in the middle of the action, sit in the bar, but a warning - it gets very loud. Brunch is also great on Sundays. Head on down to Hat City Kitchen and support the revitalization of the Valley Arts District!"

Reservations are suggested if you want seats on the lounge during a live performance as this place gets crowded quickly. If you love R&B, check out Unfinished Bizzness - a great band. No need to fight traffic to the village in NYC when they are playing."

  • "Hat City is known for appy's and presenting local talent. Often times you can see really good groups their. I saw E.R.I.C (love him) and the J.T. Project...groups I would never hear from without the exposure. The food...is mediocre and I wish it was a little better. Flavor is ok, but certain dishes need work. Presentation is nice, but flavor is important. I like the place, its really cute...they just need more staff to serve you...often times its just one waitress, but she is really nice."

  • "We went for lunch before going to a local theater because it was close and had a flavor of the old Hat City section of Orange, NJ. Unfortunately, it's more of a local place that features Open Mic and jazz sessions throughout the week. It's more of a local bar and it may very well be best suited for that. No menu just a buffet although they made eggs to order. Food was good, not great and the service was wonderful. Our waitress I think felt sorry for us because she must have realized we were expecting something else. We were the only four people in the restaurant section except for two others with 2-3 people at the bar. As we were getting ready to leave jazz musicians began to arrive for the 3PM jazz jam."

  • "Went to Hat City Kitchen for Valentine's Day. Great atmosphere. Enjoyed the venison chili and shrimp and grits, while my wife had the fried chicken. Maybe a little milder than I expected, but very tasty. With a live jazz band playing, an eclectic clientele and good food, it was just a really enjoyable experience. We'll be back!"

The food was fun and southern driven, if not spectacular, would have preferred to offer three and a half stars as the fried zucchini sticks and shrimp with grit cakes were terrific; thevrest was more average. Our group enjoyed the rock band which was classic enough for we older folks to enjoy. Of course it was loud....service was earnest and casual."

We started with their calamari; it was well prepared and not over fried (which makes it very tough)....My entree was fried chicken, mac & cheese and broccoli rabe. I don't really care for sweet fried chicken, but HCK's was really good; I ate all, but 1 piece (which I took home). Their mac& cheese: EXCELLENT; broccoli rabe was as expected :-P... I love broccoli, but not broccoli rabe - I knew what to expect, but had high hopes..lol... The Band was COOKIN' too!! JT Project (Jazz Band) host a Thursday night open mic...they KILT it!! Love them!!!!!!!!!!!! We will return again to check them out, eat and chill!! GREAT place, GREAT fun & atmosphere....Service Superb!!!"

The staff was very nice. However, it should be noted on the website that on Sundays the brunch menu is on until 3:00 pm when the dinner menu starts. I will be back and the place have a very pleasant/fun ambiance."

  • "A bit pricey but did have a good time. The service as far as getting the food was a bit slow. The meal was good my wife pork chops was great but the ribs was a bit over cooked which made it a little dry. I will return on another occasion on a week day the 10.00 mandatory cover charge along with the built in 20% gratuity was a downer. I understand that you have to pay the entertainment and make sure that the waitress are fairly compensated. On a scale on 10 you rate 8.5 I will refer you business to friends."

  • "Loved our meal here. We did not go during the live music so the noise and atmosphere would be completely different but it was early. Wait staff were extremely attentive and the food was delish. The grits patty was awesome, my fried chicken is what comfort food is all about. My partner had the catfish which he adored. Not too pricey, a coop to benefit the community they are in so a wonderful cause as well. highly recommended."
