Diner Reviews
  • "From the time we walked in the door we felt welcome, the staff knew about our recent engagement and congratulated us and made us feel at home. Our server was awesome and the manager was great too. We had a great evening and look forward to potentially having our wedding at the Hart House"

  • "We had best duck breast ever. Everything oh the plate was phenomenal. From duck breast to fig jam to pure, even kale. For dessert we had excellent chocolate mousse and Anna Pavlova. Our compliments to chef's palate."

  • "Loved the ambience and layout of the restaurant in a heritage style decor. The huge front entrance fireplace was very cosy & warm to stand around & chat. Some subtle background music would add to the ambience in the smaller dining rooms as it can get quiet once other patrons have left."

  • "Hart House has been around for quite a while and the current (new) menu offers very good classic food, with a hint of contemporary influences. Portions are reasonable in size, the quality is very good, and the wine list is well chosen, offering old and new world wines in various quantities. The beet salad appetizer is superb, and I always hate having to choose between the salmon and the lamb because they are excellent. The staff are highly effective and likeable, especially the knowledgeable maître d."

  • "Despite sneaking in just before the kitchen closed the staff treated us excellently. Beautiful restaurant, very friendly staff and great food."

  • "The location was beautiful but food is nothing special. Waiter got two of our orders wrong. There was a long wait between the appetizer and the main course. The water glass was always full."

  • "Pleasant, old world charm style environment for a small (3-5 persons) Business style lunch or meeting. Good service by waiters followed up with a courtesy call by a chef to ask about the their quality of food and service presented. Menu items would appeal to a wide range of tastes . A significant wine list with food and beverage prices a little on the high side..... but generally, made up for with the good attention by the staff from reception through to table service. Great place to sample the history of Burnaby and Beautiful adjacent Deer Lake Park"

  • "Food was great, atmosphere was good, but it was the service that really stood out. Every single restaurant personnel was welcoming and patient from the moment we walked in. Very nice!"

  • "Service was fantastic, and each course was excellent. Best calamari appetiser I've ever had, but the star for me was the foie gras in the duck trio. My boyfriend had the trout, and it had a crispy sear and was just delicious. This restaurant is my pick for a romantic dinner/special occasion in the Burnaby area. Try the crème brûlée."

  • "We visited the Hart House restaurant during the "Dining Out Vancouver". The food was excellent along with the service. The cured smoked salmon with the pickled beets was delicious. This was a very pleasant dining experience and I would definitely recommend the restaurant."

  • "This is a terrific venue for fine dining but with a menu that ways has something for everybody. That said, the staff are incredibly warm and inviting and love to conversate. There is nothing "stuck up" about this terrific dining venue."

  • "The Hart House Restaurant is Burnaby's best fine dinning restaurant. The food and wine selection are among the best in British Columbia. The service is always wonderful and they make you feel very special during your dinning experience. The ambience is in my opinion the best of all of the fine dinning restaurants in Vancouver. Thank you"

  • "Went for dine out. Everything was spectacular. Scallop with risotto was my favourite. Cooked to perfection. Duck was amazing, even though it filled me up, I wanted more! Dessert just simply yum!"

  • "Food was ok. However, all I want to say is about the service. We went there for my wife's birthday with our 2 kids. I asked my waiter to have a candle ready when the dessert comes. It ended up he forgot or didn't have the candle ready on purpose. He probably was told to not give us candle because they may worry about we sing the birthday song with the kids loud. I don't know. It was just my guess. Before I asked for the bill, I purposely asked him I thought there would be candle on the dessert. He did not apologize at all. This restaurant may be good for a couple but definitely not good for family and kids friendly. I am not happy with my experience and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone I know."

  • "Hart House in the evening is very beautiful and elegant. I like the Dine Out Vancouver experience. The staff was very friendly. I enjoyed the dessert and it is very unique. It is a great place to try out if you are close to Deer Lake Park."

  • "went for the vancouver dine out menu, service is excellent. compared to some other restaurant in downtown area the food is ok level, but maybe due to my expectation is high based on the regular menu of the restaurant"

  • "Excellent night with family knowing we were in for delicious food and professional staff catering to us. We will be back many more times to come."

  • "Scallop not fresh enough as expect! I sat right by a wall, my coffee servicing from my right side, a very narrow space that I need to lean my body to let the waitress to approach! No Splenda but only Sweet'n Low for a $3.75 coffee!"

  • "My friend and I dined here for dine out vancouver. Excellent food and service. I started with a reisling poached pear which was simple and delicate and had a pan fried steelhead trout for the entree. The trout was crispy on the outside and hot and flaky inside. The only thing I would change with the trout is the side dish. The garbanzo beans that came with it were very cold and mushy. Dessert was a goat cheesecake which wasnt anything too outstanding. Service was prompt an efficient, and friendly. The manager made an effort to ask all the tables how their meals were so that's a plus. Love the location too. Excellent for wedding venue"

  • "Took my parents and wife to the Hart House for dine out. I know my parents would love the setting, and I was right. Classy decor, the waiters were attentive and our water glasses were always full. We were quite early for our reservation, but someone came over to us to offer us drinks while we waited for our table. The dine out menu this year was good. We all had the mushroom soup. It was delicious with the sherry foam. My wife and I had the trout, and my parents had the lamb. All of us found our mains to be ok. My mom commented that she found her lamb to be a bit salty. I took a taste and agreed. For dessert we tried both options, and the torte was the best. The cheesecake was decadent. Lovely restaurant."

  • "Excellent food, best West Coast food in our opinion. The chocolate dessert with the peanut butter cream was to die for, I'm still having dreams about it. Very accommodating and professional service, since we arrived 40 minutes early for our reservation and you guys offered to make unsweetened iced tea, which is so easy but not offered by other restaurants. Tables are a little close so easy to hear other diners' conversations which may be the only shortcoming."

  • "The service was sweet and friendly, the wine pairing that was suggested was amazing with my steelhead trout entre, and my risotto appy was just delectable to the final grain. Let alone the perfect dessert(s) - ie. the Goat Cheesecake & Chocolate Torte - I'm just in awe how well-rounded our entire dinner journey was here. Next time we'll also arrive a bit earlier to savour every moment that we spend in this hidden gem of a restaurant, for sure!"

  • "Hart didn't disappoint for a $38 dine out menu. It was a long experience, ~2hours but that is very typical for most packed dine out places, also it was a pleasant place so time was not really an issue. The food was very good by the end I was full which is not an easy thing to do. The courses were a nice size and great quality. Service was as expected of such a place. I noticed no kids and I cant really see kids being taken there so its pretty nice for couples and adult friends."

  • "I've lived 5 minutes from Hart House restaurant for more than 8 years and always wanted to try it but only this year, after moving to a different city, I had a chance to. I went there for dinner during Dine Out Vancouver. Started with Salmon Carpaccio which was the perfect size, and amazing mixture of flavors and textures. For main course I had the Duo of Lamb which is a Moroccan spiced lamb chop and a braised lamb shoulder chunk. The Moroccan chop was on the spicy side which I love but some might find it a bit too spicy. The goat cheese cake with stewed sour cherries dessert was excellent. Extraordinary service, friendly and professional staff that don't rush their DOV customers. Highly recommended for fine dining and special occasions."

  • "Service was slow. Wasn't seated until 15 minutes after our reservation time. Time between courses was slightly excessive for our liking. The goat cheese cake just didn't really make sense, and the bread and butter to start would be more enjoyable if the bread was warmed and the butter wasn't rock solid."

  • "As always, Hart House is a fabulous place for a lunch with friends and this week was no exception! Lovely food, great atmosphere and the usual excellent service. I will return, again and again every chance I have to this wonderful restaurant."

  • "Our group of 4 opted for the prix fixe menu, which was equivalent to starting Dine Out Vancouver a few days early. We were surprised to find that on Tuesdays, Hart House discounts their wines 25%. My Mushroom Soup and Osso Buco Pappardelle were both quite good. Our waiter was friendly and engaging. The Sardinian wine that he talked up was well worth the $66 (post discount) price. The only downside was the wet leg our companions received when a chair leg jarred the plumbing of the radiator beside our table."

  • "Amazing restaurant, one of the best on my list. Deliciouse food, great service and nice atmosphere, not cheap but worth every penny."

  • "We had a very nice meal during the Christmas season and the Hart House never disappoints with its food and service. We have been going for dinner during the Christmas season every year for the last 5 years and have only two minor comments to make. It would be great if you would consider adding some festive lights outside on the lawn area as it is screaming for some colour during the festive season. It could be a real showpiece. Also, the wine list needs review and we were surprised at the lack of BC offerings. We have some of the best wine in the world so it would be nice if the Hart House recognized that in its wine list. A great dinner!"

  • "The old house is always a delight to dine in. Unfortunately the food isn't quite worth the price. The mushroom soup was so sweet you could consider it a dessert. Haven't yet had a decent rack of lamb and at $42 it's expected to be exceptional. Chef recommends it medium rare, but can't do a medium without drying it out. However the medly side dish of brussel sprouts, squash and hazelnuts was thoroughly enjoyable . The bill was $112 for two people who do not drink (water only) and skipped dessert. Be willing to enjoy the ambiance and not the food because that's what you're paying for."

  • "Excellent service, we have been before and will go back again. It is great for that special occasion, very private and quiet."

  • "We found the restaurant to be very refined, but comfortable. Service was reserved but helpful. The menu was not large, but the items were well-prepared and tasty. The prix-fix was well thought out with adequate choice and some delightful dishes included to make it special. I enjoyed the oysters, which were fresh and tastefully presented and the chicken salad had fresh greens blended with delicious pecans and cheese nuggets. I thought the overall experience was excellent and would definitely recommend it as a place to go for special occasions and that special event."

  • "The interior of Hart House and the grounds are so lovely - no matter what the weather, and therefore, is a destination place for any occasion. However, the menu does not quite fit the lovely surroundings - hamburgers and sandwiches are just not quite classy enough. For lunch I would have loved to have been offered something like seared scallops or ahi tuna salad or a lovely salade nicoise as an option rather than hamburger and fries or basic pasta dish."

  • "The food was excellent. We had lunch on Christmas Eve and enjoyed what I would call a high end casual meal. We enjoyed smoked salmon, and lobster sandwiches. The service was friendly and we love the location and the view. Recommended for special occasions, or maybe a business lunch."

  • "Excellent food and service. Hadn't been to Hart House for a while because we'd been disappointed with the food. Since then chef and sous chef have changed and the food is now very good."

  • "Lovely combination of great food and great service. The servers especially were not intrusive asking how things are all the time; rather very much in the background and ready to serve beautifully. Hart House is one of my favorite places to dine!"
    Dined on 12/22/2013
  • "I love the layout, first floor feels like a show room kind of home, 2nd floor feels like a restaurant. Beautiful fireplace and view. Food was amazing, I loved the desserts. Would come again."

  • "From the moment we entered this grand old house, we were charmed by its atmosphere. Wonderfully decorated for Christmas. Staff was attentive, friendly and experienced. Food was beautifully prepared, tastes were exquisite. Meats were done perfectly prepared right down to the salmon ( which many places overcook!) Perfectly done. I thought pricing was in line for the type of venue. So wonderful for special occasions,"
