Love how traditional it is. I feel like this would have been a place Don Draper would have had a client dinner in the '60s. I also love the service at this place. The staff is attentive and very knowledgeable about the food and wine on the menu. Onto the food. Excellent steak and sauces and sides. This place doesn't do meals a la carte (which I hate). You get veggies and a baked potato or the daily potato which in my case was scalloped potatoes. As avid meat eaters the chance to eat some 45 day old dry cured prime rib was a mouth watering thought. We arrived on time for our reservation and was offered the chance to dine in either the dining room or the bar dining area. We chose the dining room. The lighting was very atmospheric, the noise level was perfect busy with hubbub rather than disturbing noise.
The very next evening we returned and this time opted for the bar dining area with live music (easy piano jazz this evening) again service was superb and wait staff attentive. The same staff were on duty but different staff in each dining area. We were a tad late but the restaurant generously held our table and seated us immediately upon arrival. The staff was very attentive and friendly. I had the Harris steak and my girlfriend had the filet mignon. Both of us also had the Caesar salad. The food was very good and came out very quickly and at the right temperature with the proper searing. The decor in the dining room harken back to old style SF restaurants with a bright interior, ornate chandelier & leather booths.
It isn't the most expensive in the city, but it is not cheap (easily $100 for a couple without drinks). Portion size is generous and both my date and I left full and satisfied. Steaks as always were flawless and cooked to desired doneness. This time I tried the Prime Rib and was sorely disappointed. They do not offer the Prime Rib rare but offered medium rare. Not being one to return meals to the kitchen except on rare occasions I muddled through a portion of it and requested the remander to be boxed to take home for Prime Rib hash. Jack Dempsey would be happy here. The beautiful bar has great music with paintings on the walls from end papers of 1950s history books.. The bar is fun and cozy and a great place to eat. High ceilings, high booth backs all contribute to a feeling of elegance that is all but gone in so many restaurants. My father was in the food business for 50 years and would have loved this. The bar tenders and wait staff are actually professional at their job, unlike many of restaurants. The cuisine, especially the steaks, are perfectly aged and come from Harris Ranch in California. The atmosphere is old style San Francisco... The walls are paneled with beautifully crafted dark wood and murals from scenes of our city. Occasionally, there is a small combo band or piano player in the bar area. This was a special birthday dinner for my boyfriend and I put a special message to the restaurant through open table when I made the reservation. They hit all points without me having to remind or mention it to them. This is a big deal for me since I am super picky about customer service, food and ambiance. From the moment we walked in the door to the moment we left it was such a wonderful experience. The staff is amazing, friendly, informative and not stuffy at all. We're a fun-loving group he was so much fun and played along with us during our time in the restaurant. Plus I had been to Harris' before but everyone else had not and they loved the ambiance of the venue and most importantly the food.

It came with a side of asparagus and rice. The salmon and asparagus tasted regular. I expected a "wow" effect, but enjoyed it just the same. The side of rice is extremely good though. My friend ordered the filet mignon, and said it was one of the best she has ever eaten. The website for Harris' Restaurant recommends a collared shirt if jeans are worn. Unfortunately, there were many 20 year year old guys with jeans and t-shirt. I was hoping the patrons were going to be more dressed up. Our waiter was excellent.
