Diner Reviews
  • "I think this place is riding on its past reputation. Started off with the onion soup which surprised me as it is not in a crock covered with cheese but after I got over that it was pretty good, The crispy onions in it were a nice touch. The waiter recommended the Harris steak and even with the pat of butter that arrived on top of it the steak was tasteless. What a shame, I had to eat it doused in salt and the horseradish sauce that came with the baked potato. The potato was a disappointment as well. I love a good baked potato and this one was just ok. The service was about the only high point as the staff was pretty attentive. Too much competition to go back."

  • "went to see how Harris compares to Morton's steakhouse. this was a real treat as our expectations were high and they met all of them! the steak was tender (new York strip) and done to perfection. everything including the waiter was splendid. the only thing to be careful of is the wine prices. I brought my own and thankful I did. they get a little carried away on the prices of good wine."

  • "I made a mistake and reserved a table for the wrong date. They received us happily and made it work for us to dine with them even though I made a mistake in our reservations. We had been to the Orpheum and this was the perfect way to end the night in San Francisco."

  • "My wife and I were looking for a nice place to have our anniversary dinner while on vacation. The hotel concierge suggested Harris' along with a couple others. Harris' had an opening so we gave it a try. Excellent service! Excellent Food! It was very pricey, but we had a wonderful dinner, and dessert."

  • "This was a once in a lifetime, special occasion treat for my teenage nephew. From the moment we arrived at valet parking, every single person greeted us warmly and gave us top-notch service. And the food was marvelous. Our beef was each cooked perfectly to our requested rare & medium, and the salad and sides were perfect accompaniments. We both loved the scalloped potatoes! Thanks to the entire staff at Harris' we will have a happy lifetime memory of a favorite dining experience."

  • "Real good dry aged steaks there, a very classic steakhouse with a nice ambiente. Super service, very friendly."

  • "The service at Harris' was very disappointning for a restaurant of this caliber. I took my twin sons there for a birthday celebration and thought our server was inattentive most of the evening. Our meals were tasty but didn't necessarily seem worth the high prices. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant, nor will I go again, given the other many strong options for steak in SF."

  • "I'm a little disappointed. I go to Harris' every year for now 15 year and for the first time the food was good but not very good as usual."

  • "Wonderful food and service. The staff are extremely friendly and personable. The are humorous in just the right way and everything was lovely. I wouldn't choose this all the time because it is special and quite expensive, especially with starters and salad and wine, but it was all well worth it and the portions were fabulous. We all left very happy and stuffed."

Thanks to the fabulous chefs, staff and servers for making our dining experience so incredible!"

  • "Our waitress was not friendly to our group of three and very superficial. It was very obvious that her friendliness and attentiveness to the table behind ours was much more energetic. She did not engage us much and did not seem to care for us as customers."

  • "While touring the US for vacation my team and I set us up for a Steak Challenge, testing the most prestitious steak houses in the areas we visit. Surely Harris had to be on the list and we went there with high expectations. No question, the location is top and dining at Harris is something special. However, meat has not been on par with other top steak houses we visited: porterhouse (medium rare) was not cooked evenly, filet mignon (medium) was dry and slightly overvooked, taste was poor in both cases. Sides were okay. Service was uninspired."

  • "Server was nice and informative but the food was very disappointing. This was a birthday celebration so it was a special night and I did not feel like complaining. None of our steaks was cooked properly nor did they taste very good and at $54+ a steak I expect it to be way better. Drinks were decent at best. I gave the food a "fair" rating only because the sides were tasty."

  • "I've been coming to Harris' for 20 years and its always amazing. Consistently delicious steaks, yummy sides and salads, the best steak tartare and of course the bread is wonderful too. And their cocktails are delicious and served in a small glass with the reserve on ice so you can have a perfectly chilled cocktails. Great classy ambience and excellent service."

  • "The wine, food and everything about this restaurant is top notch! It reminds me of so many places I've been to in my life, dark furniture, beautiful art, a great bar and really good food, especially the steaks! Service is superb, never overbearing, always very polite. You don't always find that in San Francisco. And really great private rooms, for small or large parties. Check it out!"

  • "Amazing steaks with crispy edges & melt in your mouth center. Steak Diane & scalloped potatoes was excellent. Dessert are amazing too. Try the baked Alaska & definitely the butterscotch pots de creme. Service was very attentive but not intrusive."

  • "Five of us dined here a few weeks ago and had a great time. The service is attentive without being overbearing or intrusive. The restaurant itself if one of those throwbacks to the white linen tables of my parent's generation but the food is updated and just high quality. We had the Prime Rib and is was excellent -- sides very well prepared. Desserts were inventive and flavorful. It's more expensive than the House of Prime Rib just up the street but a completely different dining experience and quality of meat so probably not a justifiable comparison. I'd go back again...and again."

  • "The service was not up to the standards of the restaurant. Service should be impeccable when you're ordering a 50-75 dollar steak per person. We were a group of 6 people, and they added a two-top table to the end of a banquet which was uncomfortable for the two people that had to sit on the chairs in the aisle.."

  • "Great steak dinner, great service. We sat in the restaurant. but couldn't help but notice the bar. It was crowded and the entertainment seemed a throwback to the good ole days. I would love to go back just for the bar!"

  • "This restaurant has got it down. Celebrating our sons 21st birthday here was a hit. Yes, it is expensive with cocktails but what the heck. Mixologist Robert at the bar was charming, knowledgeable and treated us like friends. Our server was so attentive and professional and patient. Jazz in the bar was inspiring. Food was done perfectly and creatively. Dessert? Well what can you say about an adorable pod of Baked Alaska except, delish! We may take another trip to San Fran just to go back to Harris'"

  • "I highly recommend this steakhouse. Great service and ambience was terrific! Had the Buffalo rib eye steak was the best I had. Recommend to anyone who want to enjoy a nice time out with your family or love one with the best steaks in SF."

  • "Ambience could be a little more personal, maybe the lights a little dimmer but overall very nice. Prefer the piano lounge over the dining room which is even brighter and more open. The service was good but a little inattentive, I won't complain (further). Food was really good with a couple of shortcomings. I had the steak tartare which disappointingly wasn't their forte. The French onion soup was perfect though. I had the Australian wagyu rib-eye for a main. The meal was fantastic, the steak juicy and tender despite being more well-done then medium as requested. Of all places, I'd think they would know how to cook a steak as ordered. Medium should have pink and there wasn't any. I think the quality of the steak saved them there."

  • "Harris' is a nice location with a warm ambiance. The service was unrushed and comfortable. The steaks however were completely pedestrian. And for the quite high prices I expected something special. Any of three three entrees could have been prepared at home by average cooks."

  • "We ate here as a business dinner. The ambience is nice, but not scenic. Plenty of space and not too loud (except for a shrieking child nearby). We ate on a Sunday night with a piano player who was excellent. Relaxing music and not loud. The food was excellent and the service was adequate but not on par with the food. The steaks were cooked perfectly. Would probably eat here again."

  • "Harris was once the best steakhouse in the City. Now it isn't even in the top 10. Lackluster and inattentive service - removing cocktail and wine glasses without offering a refill, not refilling bread or water glases, not bringing food out to everyone at the table at the same time. The steaks were mediocre, the Caesar salad bland, the onion soup lacked cheese, and the side dishes were inedible. The atmosphere is not what you expect in a fine steakhouse - crying babies, people dressed in shorts and t-shirts (despite the dress code policy on the restaurant's web site). Of course, they charge prices only a high-end steakhouse should get. But the tourists seem to keep coming! Don't waste your money, there are better options for great steaks."

  • "In from Dallas, my wife and I chose this restaurant based on the high reviews on Open Table, Yelp and being named a Top 10 steak house. I regret going to this restaurant and can't believe they felt their product was worth $250. Read on if you you like, or simply change your reservation to another steak house. Our cocktails were great and how they served my Manhattan was well done. The service was also terrific. That is where the good stopped. To be blunt, the NY strip I buy at Costco is more tender than the dry aged bone-in NY at Harris's. I couldn't believe the lack of flavor and coarseness of my cut and the same went for my wife's filet. The steak was overall of very poor quality and preparation. The potato was also poor"

  • "I had several colleagues in with me for business meetings and several wanted steak. There is only one place that is both "San Francisco and steak" and that is Harris'. I have been visiting Harris' for at least 25 years and it never disappoints."

  • " My wife's Prime Rib was the best we have ever eaten, like butter. [even better than the House of Prime Rib up the street] however, my Filet Mignon was very disappointing to me for the price and lack of quality."
