  • "We thought the restaurant was beautiful and every detail was perfect! We loved the sunday brunch and the setting in the country was lovely. We also had dinner there which was delicious. I had the shrimp and grits which was flavorful. My husband enjoyed the chicken. We had a wonderful evening! Harrimans is located in the Salamander Resort which we love. It is elegant and the staff is warm and friendly."

  • "Lovely to look at, but food and food service not up to appropriate standard of a resort."

  • "We were served by a gentleman who used to be the sommelier of the restaurant. He was fantastic! He saw that I ordered a 2000 Bordeaux and without a hesitation decanted it, let it breath, and then asked us when we thought it was ready to drink. In the meantime he saw we both ordered oysters to start and brought us each a glass of sparkling wine which is exactly the perfect drink for shell fish. The bordeaux was fantastic. Dessert was a must and was served with a glass of moscato (complimentary). All in all we were taken great care of. The wine list was a delight featuring 1st and 5th growth Bordeauxs. Food was excellent, a little less imaginative than I'd like but still good. All in all would recommend!"

  • "The restaurant has a warm and inviting feel, complemented by the view from the dining room. The venison and hanger steak dishes were perfectly cooked, flavorful, and tastefully presented. The caramelized cauliflower side dish with golden raisins and capers was very good. Pairing of ingredients added a very pleasant flavor to normally dull cauliflower. The beignets with sweet garlic creme anglaise were outstanding. Reasonably priced wine list that included some good Virginia wines (they do exist) like those from the Boxwood winery. There needs to be more attention to detail in the delivery of service, however. We found the staff to be professional and friendly, but the service lacks that seamless flow that one expects from a fine restaurant."

  • "This is second time we've dined at Harriman's and even better second time around. From being greeted at valet parking to the wonderful after dinner cappachino, everything exceeded our expectations. Started evening with drinks at their lovely, comfortable bar and then sat down in the beautiful main dining room for dinner. We ordered a ceasar salad and oysters on the half shell for starters, then had the hanger steak and the crab cake (appetizer) for entrees. Also had the potato tots and cauliflower side dishes. All were perfectly prepared and presentation was very well done. Service was top notch and everyone at the resort were friendly and made you feel welcome at every turn. Definitely will come back for more!"

  • "Great food, lovely presentations. Just the right amount of attention to our table."

  • "Service really mediocre for setting. Long wait for Bloody Marys and cream for coffee( ultimately I had to go in search for it for our guest). Food was of good quality, but service left bad taste. Suggest that staff needs more sophistication re what people expect. Staff tended to queue near host's stand rather than circulate to attend to needs. Room in which hot foods were available under -serviced as well. We had to wait for plates as none were available initially. Many food items listed were not there. One person seemed to be in charge of getting replacements and while she worked hard, the staffing was inadequate to the task. I went to the room twice and on neither occasion was there any smoked salmon in place."

  • "Service was average and took about 2 hours to get through dinner. Long wait times before almost everything. Servers were busy because there is not enough of them. She said many of them are working double shifts. Food was average and not really fine dining but the prices are not fine dining either. Very nice atmosphere and the whole place is very nice. They still are having growing pains. They have many jobs available and many positions are unfilled."

  • "Sunday Brunch at Harriman's....really was only so-so. But that really isn't a true test of a restaurant. The food was definitely not 5-star, but ordinary, although the deserts were the best item. The omelet chef took too long. And the layout was awkward. However, service was great...our lady was bubbly and very helpful. I would like to try a dinner there, to see if it comes closer to 5-star. I would not make an hour trip to Middleburg to eat there again...but would eat there if I were to stay at the Resort."

  • "I had the house made gnocci with duck and it was so salty I sent it back! My friends tried it too and they said the same thing. I then ordered the buttermilk chicken and it too was salty. They definitely need to work on their menu."

  • "This is my second visit to Salamander in the past month. The first visit was for afternoon tea with the girls, and this time for Sunday Brunch. The food was delicious and our waitress professional and attentive. All of the food is very fresh and constantly refreshed. Must have dishes are the shrimp and grits, petite biscuits with to-die-for sausage gravy, and the beef tips and hash. The dessert course includes a selection of special treats. The restaurant's decor is beautiful with views of the grounds and surrounding countryside. Can't wait to return to experience dinner."

  • "We visited the resort for a birthday celebration and dined at Harrimans on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Unfortunately, neither meal quite lived up to quality of the rest of the resort. There was nothing awful, but the service just seemed off with timing and attention to detail. Drink orders were forgotten or took a long time to arrive, meals were delivered to the wrong person. Food was OK but not memorable. There were some nice touches - everyone wished us happy birthday and they sent over champagne for the table. The restaurant is quite loud, so moving out away from the center and towards the windows helps a bit with the volume. Service at breakfast was really off. I hope they can fix things because the resort is beautiful."

  • "Terrific service and menu. Surprisingly, families with small children were present (very well-behaved), but I suppose that goes with the territory in a resort restaurant. Friendly staff, understated but elegant waitstaff. All in all a fabulous evening! The library, lounge, bar - all very busy."

  • "My wife and I celebrated Valentines Day with a dinner at Harrimans. It was outstanding. We enjoyed the veal chop and scallop entrees. The wine list and sommelier were first rate, recommending a superb Barbera and a great French burgundy. Service was very attentive without being intrusive. Tables nicely spaced in a spacious, high-ceilinged room. The drive from D.C. was about an hour and fifteen minutes, so it is a great destination of a special occasion."

  • "A bit hard to find (given that there are no signs giving the name of the restaurant either on the road, up the long entrance driveway, at the entrance itself or even once in the lobby), but well worth the visit. The variety and creativity of the meal for Sunday Brunch was excellent, and the service was welcoming, friendly and helpful, making this a worthwhile trip and experience. We will return."

  • "Unfortunately, the service for a not busy Sunday brunch was extremely disappointing, at best. Had to wait and ask for things repeatedly...even to pay the bill which, the manager generously handled after I shared my feedback. Food was very good and the resort was lovely. Will give it another try but, warily."

  • "I made a reservation for the Sunday Brunch. According to their website there would be selections from a 3 course menu that looked great. When we arrived we were told that there was a buffet and the hostess had no idea about the menu that was online for the restaurant. The buffet was not what I would expect for a resort that tries to market itself as a upper scale establishment and the menu I was given was merely salads and sandwiches/burgers. They had very few selections on the buffet and the food was very bland. I would not recommend anyone go out of their way to try it out."

  • "During a women's weekend getaway, we enjoyed a lunch, brunch, dinner and a cooking class. The cooking class was a tad pricey considering we did not cook/bake--only observed, but the brittle and truffles prepared during the class were delectable!"

  • "Loved the evening ambience, and the purse stools were a big hit among our party! Service was great and employees were very attentive to all guests. The shrimp and grits dish was very good. What I loved most was that the staff engaged in conversation and were genuinely concerned, not just about our dining pleasure, but about our overall Salamander experience. I will definitely be returning again!"

  • "The quality of this food is right on par with the town's standards. It is a great addition to other great restaurants in town. The venison is incredible. It's better than any steak option on the menu, even if you don't usually like venison. The noise level is a bit loud due to the dome ceiling in the dining room. We soon forgot about that once the appetizers were brought out. Will definitely be returning. We love the support of local farmers and other wild game in the US."

  • "Went for brunch. The food was great. But online showed a 3-course brunch menu option. There was no 3-course brunch menu option there - only a la carte breakfast or a buffet brunch. Very disappointing (and confusing since I was expecting a 3-course option). Be careful if you order the hash (which was very good by the way) to order the hash and eggs and not the side of hash (unless you want a very small portion)."

  • "Part of the new Salamander Resort, I had high hopes when I made the reservation for my wife's birthday. She has a gluten allergy and they said they would modify most recipes if we gave them advance notice. We preordered the crab cake appetizer gluten free - which they were able to do and it was quite good. Our waiter was very friendly and usually attentive, but he would vanish for 15 minutes occasionally. The onion soup was good but a bit too rich and heavy for my taste. My wife's bbq shrimp and grits were served with with too much bbq sauce (it looked like the top came off the bottle). The gnocchi with duck ragu was also a bit heavy. Overall, not bad and we will probably try it again when the menu is a bit lighter."

  • "The BBQ shrimp and grits was a very tasty entree. This is the fret time I ate grits and did not have to add either sugar or butter to give it flavor. The grits were creamy and the BBQ sauce was lboth light and sweet without tasting sugary."

We also had brunch there to the brunch was so good & it wont leave hungry, so its good for so many different occasions. My wife loved it!"

  • "We had two very different experiences at Harriman's. 1. Dinner was wonderful and the service great. 2. Breakfast next morning was weird. I ordered hot oatmeal. It was brought to me without a spoon and milk. I found another waitress and asked for a spoon and milk. After several minutes the spoon was delivered. Still no milk. Original waitress eventually brought the milk. Actually, we had a similar poor experience the afternoon before when my husband and I ordered hot tea (with milk) at a small table near a fireplace. Waited a long time and a large pot of hot water was delivered along with two cups. No tea and no milk. Someone brought a second pot of water. Still no tea nor milk. FInally got tea bags and cream, not milk."

  • "We had a magical evening at Salamander Resort. Began evening being welcomed into the beautiful lobby area and proceeded to the bar to have drinks before dinner. Bartenders were friendly and accommodating with nice wines and spirits to choose from. Then onto dinner at Harrimans which didn't disappoint. From lovely setting to their menu loaded with local ingredients, it was a good experience from beginning to end. We had ceasar salad, tomato bisque and pumpkin soup for starters. All served perfectly and each unique and tasty. Then had filet, salmon and vegetables for entrees. All were excellent! Definitely will be back for more."

  • "The property is beautiful and a complete pleasure. We had a drink in the library by the fireplace, had a drink by the bar - ALL wonderful. Wonderful staff. I have tried a few of the cocktails and I think a mixologist may need to come up with some other blends.. I haven't really liked any of the current cocktails. Wonderful staff, esp the Food and Services Manager - very hospitable, inviting, pleasant and made our experience very enjoyable. Staff were great throughout the bar into the restaurant. The food is our only issue.. The ricotto balls which were a favorite, were not tasty this time. Seems like perhaps the kitchen forgot to add salt? The swordfish and steaks were okay, but for the $35+ entrée prices, we hoped for more than okay."

  • "Overall our experience was quite good. We thought our server was stretched to thin or perhaps had larger tables. Our table was also squeezed in between others so we felt like we constantly had someone going by us and bumping our chairs and elbows. Not sure our meal was worth the price we paid."
