Diner Reviews
  • "Their Hapa Hour from 5:30-6:30PM is the best time to go. Half off parts of the menu and it's the good stuff too! Food is high quality for the price you're paying. Also the Hapa Lager is decent - if you go on Thursday's it's on special for $3. Great place to grab some afternoon tapas with a group of friends. The atmosphere and service is great! Only downside is if there's only two of you and you get stuck sitting in the two person booth there's not much table space and leg room which made it uncomfortable after awhile."

  • "We have been coming to Hapa for many years. This was disappointing. The music was way too loud and was not enjoyable (rap and annoying beat). It took 30 minutes to get a server to greet us and take our drink order."

  • "A fun, vibrant experience, with delicious fresh food, served tapas style for sharing. Highly recommended."

  • "We went here for Dine Out Vancouver and of the six of us, only two had been before. We enjoyed everything we ordered and shared most items so everyone could taste everything. It was really wonderful. My only so-so dish was a chipotle beef curry bowl. It was fine but not yummy - everything else was memorable. Really cool drinks."

  • "Very pleasant with excellent food and great early bird prices. Great place to catch up with friends. Nice and low key for an evening out."

  • "I don't want to say that it is what happens generally but I needed to share my experience. Two of out 4 plates are served in expected time but later two was not served. I warned the waitress that we are expecting two more plates but it didn't change anything. I guess she even forgot my warning. So after waiting close to 70 minutes at the table for the last two plates, we wanted the bill."

  • "I am a 'regular' at Hapa Kits. The service is always quick and friendly, and the food is always tasty and well done, with high quality frest ingredients. I was not disappointed when I visited again last week... Thanks Hapa! Reservations highly recommended!"

  • "My husband and I decided to try out Hapa Izakaya and got there when it opened. We didn't know they had Happy Hour so when we ordered, the waitress was nice enough to let us know that majority of the dishes we ordered were on the Happy Hour menu and therefore 50% off, so that was awesome! The food was good and the restaurant atmosphere was energetic. A couple of our dishes failed to arrive by mistake and so we told our waitress who followed up on it. The manager took initiative and waived the two dishes off our bill without us asking for it. That was a pleasant surprise! Even if the 2 dishes were not waived, the price of our meals were really good and we were full. Definitely coming back again with some friends!"

  • "As always, Hapa delivers their own original dishes along with some tranditional japanese izakaya dishes under their chic atmosphere. Definitely a good choice for a night out with friends."

  • "dine-out dinner menu was too oily. Lots of deep fried food even in the roll. Rice bowl was tasty and impressive presentation but the rice was cooked a bit too soggy."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "We couldn't find parking spot around the area (has been changed neighbour parking rule in Kits), so not many free parking around the area... So if you have restaurant parking we would come more often!"

  • "Restaurant was far too loud, with the game coverage blasting into the room, though no one appeared to be listening to or paying attention to it; rather it was background noise we all had to yell over to be heard. Food was tasty, but service was inconsistent with one waitress rude, another attentive."

  • "Very good food, as I remembered it. Some of the dishes were outstanding. Very good service. I hated the (new?) TV screens. I have meals at restaurants to enjoy special dishes, but also to have conversations with family members and friends. The TV screens are way too distracting and most people cannot just ignore them. They will probably make me decide to choose other places in the future. Too bad."

  • "It's our 1st time visiting the restaurant. We've decided to try out its $18 DOV menu since I've heard few things about this restaurant. However, it was a disappointment for both my friend and me. We were basically stuffed with lots of carbohydrates instead of trying their special creation (if there's any). The appetizer: popcorn pork was dry & sesame cucumber was not marinated enough. The sushi roll was only 1/2 roll & sorry to say nothing special about it. Spicy pork with rice in hot pot was a big disappointment because the rice was mushy & I felt like eating baby food. After the waitress mixed everything up once they put it on our table, we cannot tell if there was any vegetable/meat in it. Our conclusion: not coming again for dine out."

  • "I went with a group of five for the dine out menu and it most definitely did not disappoint. The service was terrific and we were served promptly and efficiently. As for the food, it was a great value for the price and we left very full and satisfied."

  • "The food was presented beautifully and was good, but it was not that tasty. It felt like something was missing. Salt? Umami? It just wasn't as good as I expected. However, their half-price tapas menu is a good deal if you're looking to be at a nice place without spending too much."

  • "Hapa Izakaya on Kitsilano nailed it for dine out for me. Im not sure the other Hapa izakaya locations, but this one was well executed. So it was very packed and instead of bringing all the 4 selections in order. They brought it as it was done, in true Izakaya fashion. This allow me and my friends to be constantly snacking at least if not fully eating. We were sharing and it was great experience overall. Also they have some more unique cocktails. The fact that it was an $18 for 4 items was just icing. As for food, it was definitely quality. There is presentation, inventiveness, and most shocking of all for an izakaya, a fair portion size. My 4 friends and I all walked away quite full. The taste is good and the style isn't boring."

  • "Hapa never disappoints. The food is fresh and comes out of the kitchen quickly. A fun experience for a first time visitor as well as someone looking for a regular go to. Embracing the Japanese culture while not being the typical type of Japanese restaurant."

  • "The food was not bad overall. The tempura prawns were pretty good. The rolls were tasty. My curry beef stone bowl was lacking in flavour though. The service was not good. The management could have placed more servers on the floor given the fact that it was a busy time. We had to ask twice for our tea and napkins. Some of our orders were unnecessarily slow to come out (cold cucumber salad). Then they brought us the wrong dish, and we had no idea because it was in a stone bowl which we had both ordered, so of course we ate from it. Then they brought us two more stone bowls and took back the stone bowl we had already eaten from! If I were serving, I would have left the mistaken dish. Might have been better on a quieter night…."

  • "We got here with our 5:30 reservation for Dine Out--good thing we did, since it filled up very quickly. This is one of the best deals ever for DO--the food was absolutely delicious, and the value superb. The servers were chipper, friendly, and high energy. The server forgot to bring our sake in a timely fashion...when she remembered, she was very apologetic, brought us the sake--and later took it off the bill! That's something that many restaurants don't do, but should. It's very impressive and makes us want to return. Yay, Hapa!!"

  • "What a fun scene - and the food was delicious. Considering how busy the restaurant was i was impressed with how fast the food came out and how well the servers kept on top of it all. Another great meal at a local favourite."

  • "it was my first time going to hapa izakaya and I really loved it and have no regret of choosing this place for the dine out vancouver event. It could be improved if the place had a parking space available because I had to drive 10 minutes to find the parking space. Other than that, great food great service and great ambience. I would definitely go back to this place again."

  • "This place is noisy!! From the moment you walk in their was a woman yelling at the top of her lungs, then the bad music (speakers every two feet and to top it off sports on all four large screen T.V.s Our server was sweet and deserves credit. The place seemed understaffed. She had her hands full but apologized for our wait. The set menu was limited and they were sold out of one main dish (there were 4) at 7pm. Parking is difficult in that area. I've heard happy hour is the way to go."

  • "Everything was perfect but the fact that they did not have any tea which is kind of surprising for a Japanese restaurant. Food was really good, service excellent and great ambience."

  • "We went there as a group of 8 and all of us got the menu for dineout. I especially liked the appetizer of chilled soybean. The second course I picked corn croquette and I really liked it. Though my boyfriend said there's too much potato. I loveeee the Chipotle beef curry Ishiyaki, big portion, a bit spicy and really delicious (:"

  • "Hapa's is undeniably a top restaurant chain with great food and great service. Our family and friends know exactly what to expect whenever we dine there. They have a formula that obviously works with various hot venues around town. If I could eat there every day, I would!"

  • "Decided to try this Kits location after trying the DT one. Very high energy, loud music but the kitchen didn't coordinate/time the order of food coming out. Got the entre before the 2 appie. Then gave us someone else's much bigger bill than ours. Without really a sincere apology, the correct bill was then brought back. The flavour of food was good but the hot stone bowl as not hot enough to make the rice crispy. Finding parking was also an issue. Will try again on a weeknight and hope it will be a better experience."

  • "Loved the appetizers! Order almost the whole appetizer menu except for the Edamame. Everything was great except for the calamari which was quite disappointing. Somewhat chewy and oily. The ambiance was vibrant but yet comfortable for intimate conversations."
