A word from Hapa Izakaya Coal Harbour
Voted “Top Five Izakayas In North America” by Bon Appétit Magazine in 2011; topping “Industry and Readers Choice” 2012 awards for Best Japanese and Best Izakaya in the Georgia Straight weekly: and “Best Casual Chain, Silver” by Vancouver Magazine in 2012, Hapa Izakaya offers a winning combination of a sexy room, well-priced portions of Japanese tapas, sushi, cocktails and premium sake. When Lea and Justin Ault introduced Hapa in 2003 they exploded the izakaya concept in Vancouver, setting the bar high for the host of contenders that followed. In 2010 Hapa was the first izakaya to join the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise™ seafood conservation program and one of only a handful of Japanese restaurant partners in the program to date. Hapa continues to be a standout for its unique blend of food, fun and culture.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "A couple disappointments include the lack of actual wasabi (Hapa Kits had actual wasabi that was ground from a plant, while Hapa CH used a paste) and the green tea. I was charged for a cup of green tea at what I consider a Japanese restaurant - The tea at Hapa Kits was not only free but also fried before being brewed."

  • "I find the staff to be very friendly and courteous. Also there is a commeraderie amongst the staff in that they help each other out in delivering food and cleaning tables. Tthis is good for me as client to witness in that my food wil be delivered hot. Only criticism I have is the wine list is weak, should have Kim Crawford or Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc."

  • "Went with a friend to Hapa Izakaya Coal Harbour for the first time and wanted to try out the hapa hour menu. We shared the beef tataki which was really good and not overly sour like they sometimes can be. Then we also had Isa - the grilled squid which was amazing, we ate it without the mayo dip and it tasted great by itself. Lastly we split the spicy tuna roll which was decent but I would not get it again, the texture of the tuna seemed too soft and mushy for my preference. Overall had a good time, hope to come back with more friends for drinks and food next time!"

  • "Food was great. We also had a wonderful sake at the end - I love that it's served in chilled bamboo glasses! Our server was good until the end of the meal - at which point we waited for our bill for over 20 minutes. We saw the servers chatting though, it looked as though they were sorting out some problem, so we were understanding - but seeing as it was a weekday lunch and we all had to get back to work, it was an unwelcome delay. Overall though, I had a good experience and would come back."

  • "Hapa Izakaya has been recommended to my by friends for years. Finally, we had a chance to try their 'new' location in Coal Harbour. We went during 'Hapa Hour' - half-price appetizers. The food was amazing! Great taste, better presentation, attentive service. Nice deals on drinks too, although we splurged on their top-end warm saki - just perfect for washing down all the yummy food. Can't wait to go back."

  • "The ambience was great with dim lighting. Food came quickly and had a unique style and taste to it."

  • "I love this restaurant. Been twice now and both times have been great. Love how you can watch the chefs prepare the food. Food is great."

  • "We dine here at least once a week and the staff treat us like gold - the staff are friendly and attentive, the food is always delicious (our favorites are the halibut tacos, ahi sashimi, gyoza, and the Hapa Roll!) and we love the lively music and ambiance - always a great experience overall!!"

  • "Food was good, but not as good as the other izakayas that I have tried. The noise level was high and it took extra effort to hear someone talk across the table, Service was so so, had to wait for awhile to see out waiter come by our table when we needed something, also was too quick to run away from our table before we finished ordering."

  • "I go to this location a fair bit before. Knew the owner who is great, but with new locations comes new staff. I could tell she was young, but some of her comments, despite maybe attempting to lighten the mood during the experience, was quite insulting especially while we were on a lunch meeting. I'd say given this location is more catered to the corporate crowd, some of those "light hearted" comments should not have been said. And because I frequent the location before (although not as often anymore) I did not take too much offense, however still shocking what she said."

  • "I have been to other Hapa Izakaya locations and by far tis was the most unclean and had the worst service, right off the bat I had to stop someone so I could place a drink and appy order throughout the night different servers thought I asked for other things then they brought the bill before we were even done but oh well it was busy and the food was still good, just go to another hapa."

  • "Food was great, ambience was great, service was horrendous. Waitress basically threw down our meals and our bills, didn't ask if we would like refills once, didn't ask how our meal was, didn't ask if we wanted our bills, didn't ask if we were done with our meals before removing our food from under our noses. I have never had worse service in my entire life - extremely disapointed. The waitress didn't say a single word to us the entire time except what we did we want to order, and what did we want to drink. It made the experience awkward and miserable. This is the last time I am bringing my friends to Hapa Coal Harbour."

  • "Excellent restaurant with great food! We literally just "opentabled" the closest sushi restaurant to our hotel and we lucked out!!! The Hapa roll and Spicy Chopped Scallop roll are insanely delicious. Staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. We will be back everytime we are in Vancouver."

  • "With all the emails and phone calls about the reservation I was reminded (3 or 4 times!) that we would only have a limited time to eat and on arrival, the very first thing that was clearly outlined was that the restaurant would "need their table back" by a certain time. Not welcoming at all. On two previous occasions trying to go to this Coal Harbour location, we were somewhat rudely turned away by the hostess person because we did not have a reservation (even though there looked to be an awful lot of empty tables). The waiter at Coal Harbour was fine - not impressed at all with the people at the door."

  • "Hapa Robson is better but not a whole lot better. Other Izakayas in town have way better food. Guu is better by far. It's an average restaurant that is not worth trying. The service was very good though although it had a Cactus Club or Joey kind of feel."

  • "The server did a great job selecting the delectable menu items for us for less than 20 dollars per person. The food was great and served very fast."

  • "Overall I thought the food was good and ambience was great. The one thing that made the entire experience a bit sour is the service. Our server was rude, felt like she had other places to be, did not smile and just passed us by. If the service had been good I would've had a better time but because it was my boyfriend's birthday we had to make the most of it. She seriously needed to change her attitude. I have tried other locations that were fantastic."

  • "Our reservation on Open table was for 8pm; however, when we got to the restaurant they had our reservation scheduled for 9:30pm. Big disappointment! After we ordered we received our orders, we noticed that we never received one of the bowls we had ordered and paid for. Since we were already full, we let it slide, however, it was disappointing that staff weren't very conscious of the order that was made."
    Dined on 2/1/2014
  • "They thought we did not honor our reservation. They bring our salad to the wrong table, ten minutes later, take it away from the wrong table, pretend to leave only to come back and bring it to our table, after it sat on someone else's table for close to ten minutes. They forgot one of our orders. We waited forever to get the bill. The server never checked on us, even though the restaurant was practically empty. We will never go back!!!"

  • "Our salads took longer than the cooked food others at our table ordered. When they arrived, they were incorrect. It took them 30 minutes to bring a new ones. By the time we received our salads, the rest of our table had already eaten. While we were waiting we got an apology and a single bowl of miso soup while two people waited for salads to be remade. You would think after waiting so long the salad would be delicious. it was not. MUCH to salty, had to pour out dressing from bottom of bowl."

  • "the music volume made it almost impossible to be heard without shouting. We were seated in the bar despite having booked a table well in advance, with TV's in several places showing sports...not our intention for a night with friends for sushi. We were rushed constantly and repeatedly reminded that the table was booked for the sitting after ours. Dishes were served very haphazardly wth two people having two plates at once and others with nothing for longer periods of time. This meant that the sable fish was cold and unpleasant by the time it was eaten. AAA chuck steak was so tough it was inedible. Out of 6 people in our party we all felt that only one dish in the four courses we each ordered was enjoyable. Total waste of money."

  • "Came here for Dine-Out so that might slightly alter my review of this restaurant but it was a very good first experience at this restaurant. The food came out quickly (unfortunately) and was hot and fresh. The appys were so flavourful and the staff were very attentive and helpful with Drinks. The house was packed that evening, a tuesday, and the vibe was great. Very nice ambiance at this location would definitely come again!"

  • "Overall, a huge disappointment. My boyfriend and I were seated right in front of the speakers as well as in the corner of the restaurant. As if the restaurant couldn't be anymore loud we were seated in an area where we could not hear each other talk unless we screamed in each others ears. Service was alright. Didnt stand out too much. Appetizers (first and second course) was pretty good. I enjoyed them a lot .But when it came to the 3rd and 4th ( where it really mattered) food was just way too salty."

  • "Hapa is a great place to meet up with clients or meet potential clients as it is fun and a real Vancouver experience. The one thing to be aware of this that it can noisy, so I would not suggest for those hard of hearing."

  • "It was my first time trying this restaurant at the recommendation of my friend. We had the sashimi salad (small), Chicken Nanban, Halibut Taco, Hapa Roll and Green tea cheesecake roll for dessert. We wanted to order Teppan steak bites but they were already sold out which is disappointing that they were already sold out at lunch time when it was just starting to get busy. One would think they would have prepared more of this item if it's so popular. Food was really good and I particularly enjoyed the green tea cheesecake as it was nice and light and had a strong green tea flavor which I love. I think i would go there just to enjoy this dessert because it's the one item that lingers in my mind."

  • "when I booked online i requested a quiet table, this certainly didn't happen! There were plenty of tables available and of course I would have asked to be changed if we had known how noisy it would become. By the time our meals came we couldn't carry on a conversation. Also, I understand the greeting by the hostess when a new clients arrive however it need not be as loud as she was."

  • "We have been to Hapa before at a different location. This is one is definitely bigger. The service was OK but there was a couple of times the food did not all arrive at the same time. There were 4 of us dining, 2 would get our food and the other two had to wait. Then 3 of us got our food and the other one had to wait. But the food it self was delicious, well prepared and presented. Yes I would still go back."

  • "the yelling by restaurant staff is anoying when trying to talk to guests. As result, we shy away from this restaurant with entertaining clients because we can not hear each other."
    Dined on 1/28/2014
  • "Food was average, nothing special, service was good and friendly but the Restaurant was very busy and there was a long time gap between courses... The Music Level was over the top. We could barely communicate with each other or with our server. Not conducive to an enjoyable dinner experience. Is it a Night Club or a Restaurant??? Identity Crisis"

  • "I've been to Hapa Coal Harbour quite a few times and have always enjoyed their food and service. I always thought during Dine Out, this was the time for restaurants to shine rather than to flop as it's their chance to showcase their food and service. This dine out visit turned out to be underwhelming. The food tasted good but the delivery of the food was way "off course" and there were no service. Don't offer 4 courses if you can't keep it straight. I was dining with 3 people and 1 would get all the food while the other 2 were waiting and waiting and waiting. Then, they realized we were told we were only to get 2 hours of dining so they "rushed" the food like mad and brought out everything, in the wrong order of course!! Bad!!!"

  • "Disappointed. First 3 items were rushed to our table and then had to wait 20 minutes for the last - was weird. Service was bad.. We were left to our own devices AND the music was waaaay too loud. My friends and I could only stare at eachother since it was futile to try and speak"

  • "besides the hostess assuming out loud that my friend was my mother (!!!) the food and service was fantastic. The dine out menu is an awesome value. We ended up ordering 1 dine out menu plus 2 extras to share for two women (at the recommendation of our server). We were pleased with our selection of options and loves all dishes received. The "Oolong Kitty" cocktail is to die for! Loved it, can't wait to go back!"

  • "Servers were friendly and attentive and kept the tea and drinks filled up. The appetizer Gomae was fairly standard but was a good-sized portion and tasty. I didn't read the menu carefully and was surprised to find that the duck came in the form of soft round balls that may have been rather fatty, and I couldn't really say what they were composed of. Tasted okay but not the texture I expected and I wouldn't order again. My companion said the prawns were very good. The rice in the seafood hotpot was flavourful, with small pieces of seafood throughout. Instead of dessert, there were four courses, which was fine with us. Nothing outstanding, but a decent amount of food quite well presented. Nice water view too!"

  • "Went here for Dine-out, and surprisingly, even at $28, their food portion were quite large, and each dish was made with care and was delicious! One of our courses went missing, but the servers immediately fixed the issue, and even the manager came up to apologize for the error. Great management and great food! A must visit, even outside of Dine Out times!"
