A word from Hapa Izakaya Calgary
Hapa Izakaya is now opening in Calgary!!!

Voted “Top Five Izakayas In North America” by Bon Appétit Magazine in 2011; topping “Industry and Readers Choice” 2012 awards for Best Japanese and Best Izakaya in the Georgia Straight weekly: and “Best Casual Chain, Silver” by Vancouver Magazine in 2012, Hapa Izakaya offers a winning combination of a sexy room, well-priced portions of Japanese tapas, sushi, cocktails and premium sake. When Lea and Justin Ault introduced Hapa in 2003 they exploded the izakaya concept in Vancouver, setting the bar high for the host of contenders that followed. In 2010 Hapa was the first izakaya to join the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise™ seafood conservation program and one of only a handful of Japanese restaurant partners in the program to date. Hapa continues to be a standout for its unique blend of food, fun and culture.

I was so excited to experience Hapa in Calgary. I found the food to be just ok and the service was just ok as well. I probably won't return. Was hoping for a more Authentic feel like in Vancouver. But this restaurant seemed very westernized.

  • Happa Hour!

I came here for Happa hour with a group of 6. Overall we were very happy with the food we got for the price (half price items for happy hour). This place has a lot of potential, but it just needs to get its name out so that it is more busy in the evenings. All the items we ordered were great except we found the mushroom risotto to have too fishy of a taste to it (probably due to the oysters in it). I'm looking forward to trying the food off their regular menu. To keep happa hour busy, they should switch up the items on the 1/2 price menu every month or so. Overall a good and fun experience. Great music too!

They forgot little detail which made me disappointed. I mentioned that it was my bf's birthday. At least they should have bring cake in the end. All my efforts that i tried but for nothing. My goal to bring my bf there was specially because of his b.d but they totally forgot. Overall, service and food was N1!

I've eaten at Hapa Izakaya in Vancouver and was expecting it to be the same. It wasn't. The food was less exciting and it didn't have the fun loud atmosphere. Since it is relatively new and they might just have some kinks to work out I would go back and give it another chance.

  • Not like the Hapa's in Vancouver...

The atmosphere is very empty and sparse in decoration, feels like eating in a gallery. The food was average, there may be an issue if the restaurant has a bigger drink menu then their food menu. The food came out super quick and we instantly knew that the food was definitely not made-to-order. Sorry Hapa, your Vancouver locations had great atmosphere, warm and fun, and the food was much more creative.

This is a nice, trendy looking place in the beltline that has really good food and the staff is lively and yell at people when they come in the door. It's more expensive and has smaller portions than other joints in town, but I guess that's what Vancouver will do to a chain. I'd probably rate it a 3.5 if that were an option. We'll stick to Globefish.

I've been to a couple of Hapa's locations in Vancouver a few times, so when I heard of it opening in Calgary I was super excited. We started with some deep fried takoyaki. It was my first time trying a fried version, and although I prefer the traditional grilled version better, it was still a nice dish. We then followed with the tuna avocado dip with plantain chips (very much a version of Hawaiian poke), pork belly lettuce wrap, and my staple, the pork hot stone rice bowl, and a cocktail. Great food, service, and a nice interior. Some staple dishes you should also try include the gindara (sablefish), ebi mayo (shrimp), and always check out the fresh sheet. Highly recommended!

The food wasn't as tasty as I anticipated--the flavors were not very special. Best dish: gyoza tempura, a very creative take on putting the two together. The Hapa roll was also unique, in that it included crunchy asparagus and was lightly torched at your table. Unfortunately the salmon croquettes (on their specials menu) on skewers were overly salty. Overall, not really worth what we paid. Service was upbeat and pleasant with lots of noise and greetings in Japanese all night long. Great drinks list including Sake and other fusion-Japanese drinks. Nice location with plenty of street parking in this area of downtown. If you want some high-quality Japanese fusion, try Cerezo instead.

Loved the food, great for groups that like to share to take advantage of many excellent tastes. Dynamite Rolls, Curry Bowl, Beef Short Ribs, Udon, we tried about eight different dishes and all were excellent! Especially liked that the service brought them out one or two at a time, we had the perfect number of diners, six, so everyone had a taste and then the next dish was served! A great evening out! Found the techno Pop music a little loud for my taste, but it feels like it caters to the 20 something's and it did not bother the rest of the group.

The pros: modern interior, service was good, the rolls were quite good- definitely try the Hapa roll if you go The cons: bland appies and stone rice bowls, greasy udon, the entire staff yell in Japanese as each group of customers enters/exits, it's pretty distracting when you're trying to have a conversation. Our table seemed to have a sticky surface from whatever finishing they used, it made sharing the plates a little difficult. There was some rap music at the beginning of the night- good if you're into that genre but akward if there are youngsters/seniors at the table (they did end up putting on some lounge music halfway through so it's not that big of a deal)
