  • Great Food / Reservation issue

First time at Hank's and there for our anniversary. In brief, the food was awesome and the service was efficient. And we probably won't go back. There are so many great restaurants in Charleston and this is truly one of them in terms of food quality. The issue was that we had a 6:30 reservation (and showed up on time) and weren't seated until 7:08 (after a 20 minute delay estimate). If a party has a reservation, a table should be available at approximately the reservation time...period. We were famished and antsy and nothing was offered to offset their issue. The manager was polite after being informed post-meal -- handled himself well. But again, why roll the dice when there are so many great alternatives.

We chose Hank's to celebrate my husband's birthday. We started with the calamari/shrimp appetizer which was fantastic. I chose the broiled seafood and my husband had the tuna. Both were perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. We finished with the banana cream pie. There wasn't a crumb left on the plate. We will definitely return to Hank's again when we visit Charleston.

My sister and brother-in-law from the NYC area and their good friends from Maryland were visiting Hilton Head and decided to pay us a visit in Charleston for the day. I made reservations at Hank's and assured my sister it would be a memorable meal. Needless to say the food was excellent and the service was outstanding. Our visitor were most impressed by the food that was served. I am certain it made a lasting impression on all. Hank's has become a go to restaurant.

Hanks is a mainstay for us. Always quality food (the crab cakes and citrus beurre blanc were wonderful!). Service was attentive, but not intrusive and could second guess our needs. And we had a very nice, comfy table where we four diners enjoyed our views and enjoyed being able to visit with each other. I am one who likes to be able to speak with my dining companions and not have to shout. Thank you for attending to the "buzz" level.

My date and I were greeted promptly and our hostess apologized for the wait on our reservation but directed us to the bar for a cocktail while we waited; we ordered a margarita and a greyhound - uniquely infused with jalapeño and pomegranate, respectively - and absolutely loved them! Our bartender was engaging and polite, and had our check ready quickly so we could grab our table as soon as it was ready. Our server was friendly and extremely knowledgeable, she made great suggestions for food and wine as well! We were planning to eat again later and wanted to stay on the lighter side so we went with the peel 'n eat shrimp and crab cakes. The presentation was superb! The crab cakes and sauce were some of the best we've had in Charleston

The food was phenomenal. We had the seared rare tuna and grilled swordfish they were both amazing-we left nothing on our plates. Only downfall was the noise level made it difficult to talk and enjoy our dinner together which was accentuated by the length of the table increasing space between us.

I had the salmon and it was delicious. My dinning partner had the shrimp and grits and stated it was ok. The frustration was that the greeters tried to push you to the bar. So that you would forget about how long you have been waiting for your reservations. Problem the bar area was full, knee deep.

  • Muddy oysters and overlooked clams

    Dined on 8/17/2014
Sometimes too much success can be a bad thing, and this seems to be the case with Hank's, which relies more on its reputation than on the quality of its food. My wife and I were drawn here by the former and driven away by the latter. Each oyster in our $24 oyster sampler contained grit, two mud, and none any flavor. The ceviche was quite good, but the clams in white wine that followed had the texture of rubber bands and were served in a sauce that had clearly been over-reduced, leaving it cloyingly salty. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal offered no improvement. I don't know what Hank's did to earn its reputation, but sadly it's not doing it any longer.

  • Another Great Dinner at Hanks

    Dined on 8/17/2014
We enjoyed another great dinner at Hanks on Sunday, August 18. We had an earlier reservation then the last time we were here and did find it to be not quite as romantic because of all the families with kids. The mood definitely changes with a later reservation. The food was terrific, the waitstaff attentive. My only complaint would be that they would not allow me to order the fried mashed potato because they were running low on that item and it was considered part of the scallop dish so we would have had to order scallops. Oh well.

Service was outstanding! We reserved at table early (5:45pm) since we had my 11 month old with us. I was happy to see other babies there too. The service staff were so accommodating and professional. I didn't feel judged at all and the server even offered to get my daughter some water, juice or crackers...whatever she needed. The food and wine were all very nice. I would say food its overpriced by about $5-10 and wine had a huge markup. But we had a great time so if you can afford it, I say go.

We have been to Hanks many times over the years. The food and service are always excellent. We have never, ever been disappointed in the food or the service. The noise level is bothersome, though. The tables for two are very long and not very wide. We were constantly knocking off silverware and so were the people around us. It is very difficult to carry on a conversation with your dinner partner. The tables are also so close together that you actually sit closer to the person at the next table than you do your own dinner partner. If you are looking for the hip, in place, then Hanks is for you. If you are looking to unwind after a long day, then you probably need to go somewhere else.

Always a favorite -- as evidenced by a restaurant filled with hungry folks -- it didn't disappoint again. Food was hot and quite tasty - being the chef's special that night -- salmon with sautéed spinach and a lobster spring roll, followed by key lime pie. Many folks wait and wait to get in here because they just drop by -- won't work on the weekends. Well worth the planning of a reservation.

Our server knew this already because we had put it in our reservation comments and was very helpful in picking out an appropriate starter, entree and dessert. We really didn't have to explain anything. We had a great experience and most of all we just appreciated how accommodating and knowledgeable our waiter was--thank you Casey!
