Diner Reviews
  • "Sometimes too much success can be a bad thing, and this seems to be the case with Hank's, which relies more on its reputation than on the quality of its food. My wife and I were drawn here by the former and driven away by the latter. Each oyster in our $24 oyster sampler contained grit, two mud, and none any flavor. The ceviche was quite good, but the clams in white wine that followed had the texture of rubber bands and were served in a sauce that had clearly been over-reduced, leaving it cloyingly salty. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal offered no improvement. I don't know what Hank's did to earn its reputation, but sadly it's not doing it any longer."

  • "Service was outstanding! We reserved at table early (5:45pm) since we had my 11 month old with us. I was happy to see other babies there too. The service staff were so accommodating and professional. I didn't feel judged at all and the server even offered to get my daughter some water, juice or crackers...whatever she needed. The food and wine were all very nice. I would say food its overpriced by about $5-10 and wine had a huge markup. But we had a great time so if you can afford it, I say go."

  • "We have been to Hanks many times over the years. The food and service are always excellent. We have never, ever been disappointed in the food or the service. The noise level is bothersome, though. The tables for two are very long and not very wide. We were constantly knocking off silverware and so were the people around us. It is very difficult to carry on a conversation with your dinner partner. The tables are also so close together that you actually sit closer to the person at the next table than you do your own dinner partner. If you are looking for the hip, in place, then Hanks is for you. If you are looking to unwind after a long day, then you probably need to go somewhere else."

  • "Always a favorite -- as evidenced by a restaurant filled with hungry folks -- it didn't disappoint again. Food was hot and quite tasty - being the chef's special that night -- salmon with sautéed spinach and a lobster spring roll, followed by key lime pie. Many folks wait and wait to get in here because they just drop by -- won't work on the weekends. Well worth the planning of a reservation."

  • "My wife is gluten free and has some other dietary restrictions. Our server knew this already because we had put it in our reservation comments and was very helpful in picking out an appropriate starter, entree and dessert. We really didn't have to explain anything. We had a great experience and most of all we just appreciated how accommodating and knowledgeable our waiter was--thank you Casey!"

  • "We went to Hank's on a visit to Charleston - it was highly recommended and did not disappoint! The food was great, service spectacular and we also enjoyed reading about old Charleston on the back of the menu! Don't miss that gem!!"

  • "I highly recommend Hank's. A reservation is a must--even on a weekday. The service is impeccable, the raw bar well-stocked and the food delicious. I will be returning when I have out of town guests!"

  • "Food has gone downhill, overly priced, service horrible!"

  • "Very, very loud atmosphere. Wine and food were over-priced. Guessing it has a 300% markup on many wines. Staff was courteous and prompt. Food was good, of course, but nothing terribly unique or special."

  • "Having previously worked in food and beverage I wasn't thoroughly impressed. I went to Hank's for the first time on Tuesday for my birthday with my boyfriend. My experience with Open table as a previous hostess is that once the guests have been seated the server receives a slip of paper and if notes such as "birthday" or anniversary is noted on there. The two hostesses acknowledged that it was my birthday, but even after we ordered two local beers the server returned and apologized for forgetting to Id us. Mind you, we already had two drinks sitting on the table that we got from the bar (and my birthday is of course listed on there). We had to lean across the table to hear one another because it was so loud. The food was good though."

  • "We very much enjoyed dinner at Hank's. The environment is energetic, loud and crowded! Sometimes that's the kind of place you want when traveling. Although many customers were tourists, it didn't feel inauthentic; just the clientele when so well located downtown. We ordered the She-Crab soup, baked oysters, grouper and Shrimp 'n Grits... all were delicious. Note, the wait to get in, even with a reservation, can be long as the restaurant cannot always, to the minute, gage how long it takes for tables to clear. If you love seafood, it's worth the wait."

  • "The service was great, the restaurant was gorgeous but the food was just okay. I ordered a seafood pasta dish that sounded like it should have a goodly amount of seafood in it but it had one scallop, 2 clams, and two shrimp in it. The pasta itself was a very small portion. My mom ordered the bouillabaisse and was not impressed at all. The service however was perfect and we loved the table and ambience."

  • "The atmosphere is great, the drinks are great, the wine list is great, the servers are great, the bartenders are great and the food is outstanding. In my opinion Hank's is everything a restaurant should be, an absolute pleasure."

  • "My family and I really enjoy going to Hank's, we have dined there twice and each time it was very good. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about menu and how food is prepared. During the high season, it is recommended to have a reservation."

  • "Like a few other postings, the good: the food was very well done and well presented. Portions were adequate. Good selection and some interesting specials. The Bad: even with reservations was asked to have a drink at the bar while the table was being prep'd, very noisy inside, wine list was bit lacking and with a higher mark up than comparable establishments."

  • "This is a return visit for us. It was the best meal we had in Charleston 2 years ago and everyone wanted to go back. We took another couple with us and everyone had a great meal. A great restaurant maintaining it's cache."

  • "As usual our food was excellent, preparation and presentation. Server attentive and knowledgeable. Unfortunately a rowdy group of tourists from the market dressed in football jerseys was seated near us and we opted to leave without dessert. Hank's is a great restaurant but near the Market."

  • "The food was not as good as sister restaurant. The service was good. The she crab soup was good. Tuna entree was not good at all. The ceviche was not true ceviche with lime juice. I was very disappointed in food considering the hype."

  • "This place is POPULAR. If you are planning to go, you will need a reservation. If you love seafood, you are going to love Hanks. We had the shrimp and grits, which was among the best we have tasted, although perhaps a tad too much tomato in the sauce. The she crab soup is superb. I had the broiled seafood platter which had scallops, grouper, shrimp and a crab cake with home made coleslaw and sweet potato fries. Very high quality seafood. Dessert was a very unique take on pecan pie. We loved it, but it is very HEAVY on the pecans."

  • "We really enjoyed ourselves all the way from cocktails to desserts. I would recommend this restaurant all day long. The waiter was a true professional which made our experience that much more pleasant. This was the best dinner of our entire vacation. We stayed at Kiawah and it was well worth the drive to Charleston. We have dined at most of the highly rated restaurants in Charleston in the past and I would rank this at the top. Thanks Hanks!!"

  • "My husband and I both loved Hank's! Our favorite meal in Charleston!! Our waitress, Kellen, was amazing...ask for her!! The best Cerviche, She Crab Soup and amazing Grilled Scallops. We would definitely recommend and when we make it back to Charleston, it will be a do-over for sure! You won't be let down...GO!!!"

  • "We've been to Hank's before a couple of years ago. It was good then and still remains strong today. She-crab soup is great as are the many delicious entrees to choose from. You will not be disappointed. Go early if you can especially if on a weekend."

  • "We always make certain to eat at Hanks whenever we are in Charleston and with one graduate and one still in school at CofC, we are in Charleston 3-4 times per year. We always choose Hanks because of the consistent great service and food. We have never been disappointed. You can't beat the grouper on risotto unless the seafood special is interesting that evening. It is also our favorite spot for pecan pie in Charleston."

  • "If you are looking for a good Charleston restaurant that will satisfy a group, Hank's is where you should go. It is especially good if your party includes boys who need plenty to eat. My husband and I took our 21 year old sons and they loved it. There are lots of wonderful restaurants in downtown Charleston, but many do not have portions to satisfy boys. Plus, it's always delicious!"
