We started with soups (she crab and oyster stew both good) and then love in to the fried calamari and shrimp appetizer which was ok. Best part of the meal was the fried oyster and shrimp entree my husband ordered.

We had the best table in the restaurant, tucked in a corner near the front window! After a day of rain and drizzle, halfway thru our dinner, the sun came out and a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky! Our meal was very, not the best in Charleston, but very good. The noise level was horrific, but since we were tucked in the corner, we were able to have a conversation.

  • Very poor dining experience
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014

Cold soup starter lacked any imagination or spark - very bland. But it was better than onr of the two main course fish dishes, which was so undercooked it was inedible. At least the waiter was gracious enough to waive the charge without being asked. The other course was a very good snapper. For dessert, the key lime pie was light on flavour and entirely forgettable.

It is loud, which maybe a seafood restaurant character, but we did not appreciate it. Service level was not commensurate with the prices. The former was average at best but prices were high. We expect more personal service. House salad was simply lettuce and not worth $8. She crab soup was average at best. Seafood a la Wando was quite good. Seared tuna and glazed onions was quite good, too. If someone asked us to go there, we would go but we would not choose it on our own.

The good news is the food was excellent and the service impeccable. We had a 9:30 reservation (couldn't get one sooner) and it was "restaurant week", which may explain the exciting part of the evening. There was an extremely noisy table of 8-19 near-by. They were just having fun; but if you were looking for a quiet romantic evening, that would take the edge off. On top of that, a three layer appetizer "tower" was knocked over into one of the guest's lap at another table, which created quite a stir that lasted 30 minutes. So, if you want to take full advantage of the atmosphere, food and service, you might pick earlier in the evening during the week. If you're looking for more of a "scene", later Saturday night might be just for you.

We had the fried shrimp, sweet potato fries and cole slaw. They were fried perfectly and cole slaw was fresh. Would go back and will recommend it to anyone considering dining there.

We went during Charleston Restaurant week but had reservations. Got there a little early to sit at the bar, which was nice. The bartender overheard us talking about our recent engagement and gave us free champagne, a great surprise. We got the she crab soup and swordfish which was all phenomenal. I have heard of other restaurants not being able to serve their best quality during restaurant week but we were overly impressed with the quality. Hank's was recommended to me and I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The restaurant was highly regarded by those in Charleston and recommended by the hotel. The waitress we had seemed put out with the fact it was "Restaurant Week" and she seemed to go out of her way to be rude and less than accommodating. After our meal was served, she never stopped by to check on us, but attended the table next to us on many trips going right by us. Unfortunately, you don't just visit a restaurant for the food. You pay for the experience and this was less than satisfactory. We were with another couple for business and I would have preferred to have paid more at another restaurant than to have been ignored at this one.

We were looking for a place to celebrate our friends' wedding anniversary in Charleston and I emailed another friend who lives in town for his recommendations. He said that Hank's was his "go-to" whenever he went downtown. We made reservations, and no fewer than three other people commended our choice: our bellman, concierge and doorman--all a very good sign! We went that evening and were not disappointed, food and service was outstanding (get the grouper!), and they made this anniversary a great memory for our friends. I would highly recommend! Make sure you get reservations though, it gets VERY crowded!

The food was very good and the menu had several authentic South Carolina dishes. Our server was absolutely outstanding and help make our dinner much more enjoyable than the food alone. She made several great recommendations like the She Crab Soup and the Shrimp and Grits that were top notch. The restaurant is certainly not inexpensive but this is one of the few times recently that I paid top dollar but actually felt like I got what I paid for. I would recommend this restaurant higly.

We, and our guests, were expecting delays and slow service because of restaurant week. Didn't happen. We were seated immediately. Our server did the drinks, appetizer, specials dance with superb timing and our meals were right on schedule. We decided to take a quick trip to Charleston, SC for our wedding anniversary. It was Restaurant Week, so our somewhat last minute reservation was limited to a few recommended restaurants. We made an Open Table reservation for 8:00 on Sunday night, and made a notation in the on-line reservation that we would like a nice table since we were celebrating. We were seated in a nice curved booth in a corner - probably the nicest table. Our waiter was attentive without being a bother. The food was wonderful - I had the scallops which were cooked perfectly (which is seldom done). My husband had grilled shrimp with grits and loved it too. Nice wine list and the waiter wished us "Happy Anniversary" at the end of the meal. We'll go back!

Dined here with a party of six. The she crab soup was the best I have had in charleston. (So far) the sesame crusted tuna was wonderful, as well as the fried shrimp. The only complaint was we were there for a little over 2 hours. Although the appetizers arrived quickly there was quite a lag for dinner. But overall would recommend for a great seafood dinner.

Was so looking forward to finally be able to have dinner at Hanks. Had heard so many good things. The service was excellent but the food was sub par. We attended on Restaurant week so maybe not up to level. Three in the party and all dishes were so-so. I had the fish and had to cut with a knife as it was undercooked. Daughter had fried platter and the oysters were very chewy. She crab soup needed a little sherry to elevate the flavor. I was disappointed but loved the ambiance and service. Hoping it was just a fluke during restaurant week.

The food and menu was very good as usual. The service however felt rushed and below par. Only two of our party ordered off Restaurant week set menu. We had cocktails and a nice bottle if wine. Bill was over $300. That's a lot of money to feel your being rushed. After ordering cocktails and asking for time to look at menu, the waiter asked us 3 times to order before ever bringing our drinks. And once the entrees arrived our water glasses were never refilled. We rationed out what w&f had and shared. I know that RW can be busy- but experiences like that one don't send me rushing back in on a random Tuesday. Wish we choose somewhere else who didn't lower their service standards to meet demand if the week. Did enjoy the food.
