Diner Reviews
  • "Seafood platter is our regular dinner here. The oysters are lightly breaded and so tasty. Flounder and slaw are great as well."

  • "We enjoyed the food. However we would have preferred a booth over a central table."
    Dined on 4/15/2014
  • "A top notch Charleston dining experience in a great location with a wide array of seafood entrees, an extensive wine list and quality service. Dining space was a bit overcrowded and noise level was fairly high. Overall a worth-what-paid-for experience."

  • "A bit pricier than other restaurants in the neighboring streets but delicious food. Everything we ate was perfection! Not really a place for kids...more of a date night or dining with friends. Enjoy!"

  • "Our last evening in Charelston at Hank's was fabulous! Grouper/risotto dish so yummy. Best Gin and Tonic west of London!"

  • "Excellent food, service & ambiance in Historic Charleston. Highly recommend this great restaurant."

  • "My husband and I ordered the Chef's Specialties..he had the grouper and I had the pan seared scallops and they were outstanding. Our dinner companions had fried platters and said that they were good, not stunning. So, stick to the special dishes and you truly can't go wrong. The service was excellent and we will return on our next trip to Charleston!"

  • "My husband and I chose this restaurant while on vacation primarily because of its proximity to the Charleston carriage rides but were pleasantly suprised when it turned out to be so good. The restaurant has both tables and booths and a classy decor. We found both the bartender and our waiter to be very friendly and helpful. We both ordered seafood, a shrimp dish and one with sea scallops and both meals were very good. If you want to go to this restaurant be sure to book early. We made reservations on Monday morning for Monday evening and could only get a 5:30 or 8:30 seating."

  • "After a number of days of enjoying the sensational seafood restaurants in Charleston, we had trouble finding another seafood restaurant in Charleston at the reservation time we needed. We settled on Hank's. Little did we know how much we were settling. The restaurant is a large warehouse type structure. The cerviche was good. But the main and expensive dish we ordered, the raw shellfish tower was so bad we had them take it away. The mussels and oysters were awful. I bit into a large shrimp and the center was mushy. The oysters were flavorless. Don't ruin an evening in Charleston, Charleston is full of great restaurants. We saved the evening by going back to the Cyprus later in the evening to get the bad taste of Hank's out our mouth."

  • "We chose to set up reservations at Hank's Seafood based on online research prior to a trip to Charleston. There were many positive reviews and it appears to have received numerous awards. My wife loves seafood while I do not so sometimes I have difficulty finding the same quality food while going to a restaurant that specializes in seafood. My wife loved her Bouillabaisse and I loved my Buttermilk Fried Chicken. It was very busy so reservations appear to be a must. The noise level was typical of any restaurant and the staff was very attentive. I highly recommend Hank's Seafood."

  • "Made a reservation for a special birthday celebration. I was really looking forward to celebrating at Hanks, but was so disappointed. The food was good, but the entire dinning experience was terrible. The noise level was so loud we could not even hear each other at the table. Couldn't hear the waitress tell us the specials. She developed an attitude when we told her we were having a hard time hearing. I realize the noise level was not something she could control, but she could have handled things much better."

  • "These folks always are at the top of their game no matter what time of year or how crowded. If I'm only in Charleston one night Hank's would always be my choice. FWIW the Fried Chicken is amazing. I bought a cookbook on the last visit…have never seen one done better."

  • "The service was wonderful. The food was fabulous. And the ambiance was upbeat and cheerful."

  • "It was hard to choose from all the delicious sounding offerings on the menu but it was well worth if. I ended up going a la carte and the grilled grouper I chose was wonderful! And the she crab soup was heaven in a bowl! I could've stopped with the soup and been very happy but I'm glad I didn't. It's a little noisy but by the time the bar crowd starts leaving the noise level isn't so bad. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed the food and drinks, which were nicely stiff. Service was impeccable, and they seated us earlier than our reservation. Definitely a must-eat restaurant when you are in Charleston."

  • "We are in Charleston 3-4 times a per and always make certain to eat at Hanks because we know the food will always be great. This was our best experience ever because of the service. Our waitress was great. She obviously had a good understanding of the menu and the wine list. We explained the types of wines that we like and she picked out two that we really liked at the price point we requested. Was always there when we needed something and didn't hover. It didn't hurt that the special was outstanding. The blue cheese risotto was great and the fish was cooked perfectly. Best overall meal that we had in Charleston the entire week."

  • "We chose Hanks for dinner following our wedding on Folly beach. We eloped, it was just the two of us, and Hanks was perfect for our occasion! The food was amazing, some of the best seafood we've had. Thanks for a wonderful experience and the complementary champaign!"

  • "When we visit Charlston again we will definitely eat here"

  • "Another Tour guide recommendation. Delicious fresh seafood."
    Dined on 4/7/2014
  • "The grits were too salty for the shrimp and spinach dish. Would definitely return to Hanks but would order something that did not include grits."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "Although the prices are a bit high the food is absolutely worth every dime and large bill I spent. I got the seared scallops with asparagus and added jumbo shrimp. Best scallops I've have in a long time and the shrimp was perfectly cooked!"
    Dined on 4/7/2014
  • "Food was good, but for the price would expect excellent."
    Dined on 3/31/2014
  • "Food was good, but dishes didn't compare with other seafood establishments in Charleston. Service was slow, especially in clearing tables and changing dishes."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "A wonderful restaurant in Charleston. The only problem is figuring out what to order. Everything is delicious. We will go back on our next trip."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "not as exceptional as we had hoped for based on other things I had read though"
    Dined on 3/24/2014
  • "Chose the special (Trigger fish on sweet potatoes and greens) ... always a great decision! My only recommendation is that the greens could have used a bit more seasoning. The soup special was delicious...very flavorful!"

  • "I came to this resturant with my young daughter this past weekend. When they shared the chidlren's options NONE of them were healthy ... "We can do chicken fingers with french fries, fried shrimp and french fries...." When I asked if they have any health options such as a piece of salmon or chicken the kind waiter said he would check with the kitchen. He came back to inform me "no" and that if I wanted something healthy like salmon for my daughter I would need to buy the $25 salmon from the menu. Silly really! Why can't resturants, particularly nice resturants offer something healthy to our children???"

  • "Great treat after the Bridge Run! Nice server. Food was delivered in a timely manner and we did not feel rushed"

  • "Went to Hank's per a recommendation of a local. My husband and I both had good meals. We also had drinks and shared key lime pie. Everything was delicious, but it was pricey in the end."

  • "Hank's has great food and is obviously popular. The restaurant was full! The food was delicious, from the Seafood Linguine to the Chocolate Bread Pudding. Our server was very knowledgeable, however, our service could have been a bit quicker. It took 20 minutes to get our check. We paid in cash so we wouldn't have to wait for her to come back."

  • "The food was excellent, but the room was very noisy. Our twosome was seated next to several large groups and it made conversation difficult."

  • "This is a nice place to eat for a special day,I would like to see more items in the menu,I love their grits and the She Crab Soup is the best around."

  • "Hanks is always a perfect dinner with exceptional service. Whenever I am in Charleston Hanks is always my choice restaurant."
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "The food was ok. They claim to have the best she crab soup in Charleston but that is debatable. While we were hoping for a relaxed dinner, the waiter was constantly pushing us to order. He even brought out drink refills before we were done with our first. There were not people waiting for our table so I'm not sure what his rush was. A person, we assume was the Manager, was constantly making laps around the floor for no apparent reason. Overall, it was not a satisfying experience."

  • "Hanks had all different kids of seafood, prepared in a variety of ways. The Salmon was good and the swordfish was very good. They also offer a variety of shellfish options steamed and deep fried. Table for 2 was a little tight, but the booths look like they're a lot of fun."
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "Make a reservation! When we left, folks were waiting on the street. Broiled seafood combination #5 was fantastic."

  • "Hank's Seafood just confirmed they provide the most compleat dining experience in the "Holy City"! They welcomed our prime-time reservation for six eager diners, in town to again sample Charleston's best! From the warm reception, to the attentive and personable wait staff, to the table visit by management insuring our satisfaction and plans for a return- Hank's provides a model for other restaurants to follow! Of course, the seafood was prepared and presented with perfection, without a hint of compromise to the mostly- tourist Sat evening clientele! Thanks Hank's!"

  • "Excellent seafood. Calamari and shrimp were delicately fried, exquisite she crab soup. Very busy and very noisy atmosphere- not a relaxing or romantic dinner choice. We felt very rushed, food arrived very quickly, waiter dashed away, dishes were cleared so quickly that a plate was dropped on table and crashed into my lap. Would return for food but prefer a more elegant ambience for the price."

  • "Loved the food...some of the best seafood I have ever had....very noisy restaurant, but worth putting up with the noise for the great food...we went on a Saturday evening and a reservation is a must...would definitely go again, but perhaps at a different time"
