If you're looking for some trendy bizarre treatment of seafood--go somewhere else. But if you want great broiled and fried seafood with so many choices you can't pick, then this is the place for you. The service was fast and professional (sort of reminiscent of Antoine's in New Orleans). The remolaude with the calamari and shrimp had just the right kick to it. Oysters on the half shell were a good size. Although tastes differ, everyone in our party found something to rave about. The brownie dessert was excellent. The place was hopping on a Sunday night, so get your reservations in. Do yourself a favor and wear something nicer than jeans, it will add to your experience!

Truly an excellent reataurant all around! I booked this restaurant based on reviews and the two dollar sign rating ($$) it had. We had been to an expensive steak house the night before and wanted to spend less on this night. My husband and I each had an appetizer and an entree; we drank water; our bill was just over $100 without tip. The two dollar sign icon was very misleading so just be prepared to spend closer to $$$$ .

Being identified as the best seafood restaurant in Charleston for the last 14 years, we expected our experience there to be exceptional. Although the food was good, it wasn't memorable and with so many other great restaurants to choose from in Charleston, I doubt that we'll go back.

I was really looking forward to the dining experience but now I'm not sure I'll ever go back. It was my wife's birthday and we were seated at a small rectangular table but we couldn't even hear each other because the ambient noise was SO loud. The server was great (Casey) but we found ourselves waiting longer than normal between each course. I'm not sure why they asked about special occasions when making reservations, because they never acknowledged my wife's birthday. We skipped dessert because we couldn't wait to get of there.

Reservations are a must. We made reservations about 1 1/2 months in advance for a Friday night at 7:45. The seafood here is fresh and delicious. Although they do have a section of the menu devoted to fried seafood (which is the norm for the south) there are many other options. The swordfish and grouper were delicious and well prepared. My husband ordered Bouillabaise at the suggestion of the waiter and he was delighted. We all had appetizers - crab salad that included about 1/3 pound of crabmeat, shrimp cocktail was large and juicy and tuna tartare that was uniquely southwestern. Although busy, our waiter was attentive, knew the menu, and was a delight to talk with. He truly made our dining experience one to remember.

We had a 7pm reservation on a Friday but this place was standing room only and we didn't get seated until 7:30. This is a big, open room; noisy, tables jammed together, action packed, with wait staff frantically pirouetting around one another in the narrow aisles. Our waiter was distracted--perhaps he was trying to serve too many tables--and neglected to place our order for oysters so we didn't get to try them. Food was good, prices a bit high when compared to other similar restaurants nearby.

Hanks is a popular casual restaurant in the historic district with a broad selection of Charleston basic seafood and other typical entrees. The food is very good and although it would probably fit into a four star category in other cities, for Charleston I would place it in the upper 3 star. The busy atmosphere is geared to groups and good times rather than couples seeking a dining experience. The service was also in an upper three star category ... polite but trying to wait on too many tables. I certainly recommend Hanks for small groups and a good time. Our seafood tower was great with large shrimp, salty sweet oysters, and tasteful clams. The crab cakes and grouper were also above Charleston average.

We were lucky enough to reserve a table the day of via OpenTable. Based on tripadvisor reviews,we decided to give it a try. I commented on the reservation it was our anniversary, and to our surprise we were seated in a very large, spacious booth when we arrived. We shared fried calamari as an appetizer and for our entrees my husband had the Beef Tenderloin with bleu cheese mashed potatoes and onions and added a side of grits. I chose the Seafood Al A Wando, which for the portion, looked small, but had a delicious flavor. As an added touch they brought out a complimentary glass of champagne for is both. A parking garage is adjacent to the restaurant; have the exact amount needed;no change back :( Great for a special occassion!

We are local. My favorite restaurant in all of Charleston. Good pricing and portions. Moderate noise level. Great Raw Bar. Came for anniversary. Didn't disappoint. Had a wonderful time and although, at first, I didn't want to sit at a 2-top so close to others, it turned out to be a great time with out of towners. Even had another couple celebrating their anniversary too, so I shared my flowers. Server even brought a vase (glass) for her to put the flower in.

My wife and I spent a few days in Charleston. This was our first visit to the city. The concierge at our hotel recommended we try Hank's and we are sure glad we did. The food was excellent and I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great seafood meal. I got the Seafood A La Wando which was amazing. My wife ordered the Curried Shrimp which was equally as good. This was by far the best dining experience we had in Charleston and will absolutely dine there again on our next visit to the city.

Our preferred seating request was not met exactly to our liking as we requested a table not too close to the other diners. We ended up at a half booth with another table right next to us but we did have a window seat so it worked out. (BTW, why do restaurants think parties of two enjoy being smashed up against other tables in those half booths). Anyway, the service was great. Food was very good. Would definitely recommend and would return. I would specify no half booth next time though.

After a week in Charleston, trying to eat our way through the city, we came to Hank's on our last night. We could not have asked for a beter end to a great trip. The service was great and the Tuna was some of the best I have encountered in my travels. My wife got the broiled shrimp over grits. (This is different than Shrimp Grits.) I have to say, that the grits were the best I have encountered.
