Everything was great. From the greeting at the door to the desert. this has been one of my favorites for years and it didn't disappoint. Seafood ala Wando was terrific. A definite "GOTO" place when I'm in Charleston. Extra special was the New Belgium Sour Beer. I visited the brewery in Ft. Collins a couple of month ago and got to sample some of the sour beer and it was great. The sour beer went great with the seafood.

I tend to stay away from fried foods. However we had been told to try Hanks. There is frying and then there is Hanks. The fried shrimp were the best I have had as well as the scallops and oysters. The batter was superb and they were piping hot without any grease infusion in the protein. The rest of the meal was excellent. But after trying their she crab soup as we have had it a few times from different restaurants we have determined we do not like the plate. This was a dinner to remember for their overall quality

Went here with my wife, my mom, and my step-father for dinner after a long and rough few days of moving. The service was top notch, the food was the best seafood I've ever had, and I couldn't have been any happier with the experience. I know, too, that if I hadn't been happy for any reason, it would have been made right. My wife was a few minutes late, but the staff were extremely accommodating. My mom remarked that she had been craving fried oysters for 2 years, and the waiter offered to go off-menu for her to get a platter of just fried oysters (she declined, but was VERY pleased with her oysters as part of her platter). This is what it should be like to go out to dinner, period.

We like taking visitors to the city here. We can always count on getting some well-prepared seafood. The hushpuppies are outstanding & our favorite is the broiled seafood platter. The noise level is a little too loud making conversation difficult, but otherwise, this is a great place for a really good meal at a reasonable price.

The food was decent but better places to eat are Coast, Blossom, and Fat Hen in my opinion - if you're looking for good seafood. I had the pasta, my mom had the grilled sampler - both just ok. We also got the banana pudding and peanut butter pie. Banana pudding was runny and tasted like the jello brand version with fresh bananas cut in it. The on pie was excellent!

We found this restaurant on Trip Advisor and Open Table. Looked at reviews and the restaurant, food and service lived up to the ratings. We would recommend and return again as it is a great value. And offers a wonderful dinner selection. The scallops were done to perfection! Try it, you will have a wonderful dining experience.

  • Anniversary Dinner

We went to Hank's on a recommendation from a family friend for our first anniversary dinner. We were expecting an intimate setting, but it was very loud and crowded. (We went on a Sunday at 6pm) Also, we were warned that it was pricey, so we expected small portions of delicious food; however, the portions were large and the food was average. My husband enjoyed his grilled swordfish, but my shellfish pasta seemed to lack flavor. I believe that this restaurant is expensive because of the content, not quality, of the food. The service was wonderful and our waiter, Ellison, was very polite and stayed on top of our needs. If we decide to dine here again, it will not be for an intimate special occasion, but for a group outing.

We had the best table in the restaurant, tucked in a corner near the front window! After a day of rain and drizzle, halfway thru our dinner, the sun came out and a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky! Our meal was very, not the best in Charleston, but very good. The noise level was horrific, but since we were tucked in the corner, we were able to have a conversation.

Each time we visit Charleston, we have always had dinner at Hank's and this is the 1st time that we were disappointed. The service was only fair, when we received our appetizers the shrimp were "mushy", couldn't find our waiter, had to catch the manager walking by. No explanation for the cause of the issue. When the entrees were delivered all were acceptable, with the exception of the shrimp on the combo platter. In my other visits the service was exceptional and was the food. Not sure if we will dine there on our next visit.

Cold soup starter lacked any imagination or spark - very bland. But it was better than onr of the two main course fish dishes, which was so undercooked it was inedible. At least the waiter was gracious enough to waive the charge without being asked. The other course was a very good snapper. For dessert, the key lime pie was light on flavour and entirely forgettable.

We generally visit Kiawah Island once a year and always try to include a trip to Hank's for dinner with that trip. As always the seafood is great, the service is great and we will definitely try to return again the next time we are in the Charleston area. Our biggest issue is we are only in the Charleston area for a week and there are more fantastic restaurants in Charleston then there are nights to dine!! Had the table to two up by the front window this time, which added to the atmosphere!

It is loud, which maybe a seafood restaurant character, but we did not appreciate it. Service level was not commensurate with the prices. The former was average at best but prices were high. We expect more personal service. House salad was simply lettuce and not worth $8. She crab soup was average at best. Seafood a la Wando was quite good. Seared tuna and glazed onions was quite good, too. If someone asked us to go there, we would go but we would not choose it on our own.

Made reservations through Open Table for 7:45. When we arrived at Hanks (10 Min. Early) We were told our table would be seated at 7:45 or whenever a table was available. We decided to wait at the bar (which was nice) The Hostess at the door was not receptive or very friendly and seemed more interested in changing her shoes than be attentive as we told her we would wait at the bar. The bar was friendly and the staff there very accommodating. As we watched others get seated before us (that arrived after us) after about 35 min. we were finally offered a table. The table was tiny and wedged in between others so there would have not been an opportunity to enjoy a conservation - we opted to go back to the bar. Not what we expected.

The good news is the food was excellent and the service impeccable. We had a 9:30 reservation (couldn't get one sooner) and it was "restaurant week", which may explain the exciting part of the evening. There was an extremely noisy table of 8-19 near-by. They were just having fun; but if you were looking for a quiet romantic evening, that would take the edge off. On top of that, a three layer appetizer "tower" was knocked over into one of the guest's lap at another table, which created quite a stir that lasted 30 minutes. So, if you want to take full advantage of the atmosphere, food and service, you might pick earlier in the evening during the week. If you're looking for more of a "scene", later Saturday night might be just for you.

We went during Charleston Restaurant week but had reservations. Got there a little early to sit at the bar, which was nice. The bartender overheard us talking about our recent engagement and gave us free champagne, a great surprise. We got the she crab soup and swordfish which was all phenomenal. I have heard of other restaurants not being able to serve their best quality during restaurant week but we were overly impressed with the quality. Hank's was recommended to me and I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.
