Diner Reviews
  • "I made reservations and waited over 30 minutes to be seated. We were sent to the bar that was standing room only. Ordered drinks and stood in an over crowded, extremely noisy corner. We ordered the seafood tower and the shrimp were good but not very many. there was only one small piece of lobster that was dry and tough. The oysters were small and tasteless. Clams were good. Only saw our wait person twice and had to ask for the water to be refilled. It was my daughters birthday and it was not a good evening. I will not be going back or recommending Hanks. Debbie T"

  • "Food was good but for pricing and previous reviews expected much more. Portion size was disappointing but flavor and presentation was good. Heard thus wasn't tourist trap but not sure it's not."

  • "Of all the places I have traveled in this world, and all the wonderful cuisine I have tried, Charleston is at the top of my list, and it is unfortunate that more American critics and food lovers don’t have the city on their lists like they do other cities such as New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami, and Atlanta. In 2011 while staying in downtown Charleston, I asked the hotel Concierge to recommend to me a local restaurant that was off the beaten path, and a place where locals go to eat, not the tourists. He recommended Hank’sSeafood to me, and in the past 3 years coming to Charleston, I have been to Hank’s over 10 times, as it is the one place that I put at the top of my reservation list, every time I come. 2 words folks: Crab Cakes."

  • "My guest and I really enjoyed our meal at Hank's! The seafood and service was excellent! We will definitely be dining here again on our next trip to Charleston."

  • "Hands down best seafood in town. The broil shrimp was amazing. We made reservations through open table. It was not too crowded when we arrived and were seated immediately. Service was great, very prompt."

  • "Excellent seafood and outstanding service! Definitely call ahead for reservations as the line was out the door on a Tuesday night."

  • "We had another great meal at Hanks. I had seared tuna and wife had seafood platter. Both were excellent. Mixed drink and wine were very good. Service was very good. This has become a dining favorite and we always stop in when visiting Charleston."

  • "The fish at Hanks was good, fresh and presented well. But the portion size does not equate with the price of the meal. Overpriced. The green tomato appy was good. But the plate price was more than other area restaurants in the immediate area. Pecan salmon was very good as was the mahi mahi special. Appetizer, entrée and drinks will set you back about $60 per person, plus gratuity. Large restaurant, booths and tables, very busy."

  • "We arrived a bit early and enjoyed a drink and conversation at the bar. After a short wait we were seated at a nice two person table. The service was excellent and the waiter was very helpful in our selections. The food was served steaming hot and was a real treat. The fried Grouper and Shrimp was seasoned to perfection and collard greens seasoned much like my grandmothers. The portions were more than ample, I didn't finish my dinner and had no room for desert. It was a very enjoyable dinner and I would recommend it to my friends."

  • "We were called to confirm our reservation around noon that day. We changed our reservation from 5-9:15. When we arrived at the restaurant the changes were not made. The hostess was quiet curt about the situation. We were quickly seated nonetheless. The Shrimp and grits were amazing . The curry shrimp my dining partner ordered was delightful. The she crab soup however, was pretty bad. They over did it with the sherry which made the soup hard to even swallow. Our service was amazing."

  • "Even though we had made reservations, we still had to wait awhile. This place was packed! The curried shrimp was excellent, with just the right amount of heat. My hubby had the shrimp and grits (had to have it one more time). All the ingredients were fresh and tasty."

  • "My husband and I went to Hank's and were incredibly disappointed. My husband had been there on business, it was my first time. Scallops were salty, sand and Luke warm at best, more cool. For ~$30 we are them all, but when we told the waiter he said, "they couldn't of been that bad, you are them." You bet, for that price and when our waiter only stopped by once. She crab soup was also missing crab...we highly recommend you consider Chez Fish heading to St John Island. Fantastic, we ended up eating their two other evenings. It doesn't appear as high end as Hank's and is on the side of the road, but A+."

  • "Two of our party ordered the fried chicken and it was excellent. The grouper and the chef's shrimp were great as well. Service was the best."

  • "We always stop into Hanks when visiting Charleston. Excellent seafood - love the castle! Very nice staff. Very professional, but not snooty. See you in August."

  • "I always look forward to Hank's when I visit Charleston and am never disappointed. They've got a broad enough selection to please everyone in your group; but not so broad that they can't do an excellent job with every item on the menu."

  • "Hank's was terrific. It is both our first trip to Charleston and our first dinner in Charleston. I'm now comparing other restaurants to Hank's. Want to go back before leaving town but can't get a reservation!! Go...enjoy..."

  • "Everything was excellent, great ambiance, service was great but it felt a bit overpriced. The OpenTable rating is two $$ however should be at least a 3 - 4 dollar signs."

  • "This was our first time dining at Hanks. I would suggest reservations because they were still a little busy at 8:30. We were shown immediately to our table which was followed up shortly by a waiter. The food was fabulous and I will definitely be back when I am next in Charleston! Try the scallops, they were to die for!"

  • "Excellent restaurant. Took my wife and my in-laws. There is something for everyone on the menu. Excellent bourbon menu. Wine list is great. Seafood hands down is great. You must try the ceviche and any of the northern oysters paired with their house made minuet. Others at the table had the Seafood a la Wando and it was prepared impeccably. For dessert you must try the banana cream pie and the peanut butter pie. I look forward to returning soon."

  • "Great seafood as always but the Gin Rudy was a real unexpected treat.....so much so that I found a local shop selling the 'small batch tonic'. The key lime pie is authentic and tart....large slice!!"

  • "When visiting a new city for the first time, I always ask the taxi driver where he would take his wife to dinner for her birthday. This is where he recommended. It was the best seafood that I have ever eaten."

  • "The best seafood restaurant we've found in Charleston and we've been in and around Charleston on vacation for 10 plus years (finally were able to make it to Hank's after our kids matured enough to go to a nice restaurant) - 5x better food and 10x nicer than Hyman's which is a tourist trap. Very good service and everyone enjoyed their meal (first time we've been to a restaurant and nobody had chicken, burger, pizza or something from the kids menu). My wife suggested that next time we go we get the tower/mountain appetizer and then have appetizers for dinner (which is not a bad idea as all of the appetizers we had were fantastic."

  • "Front of house seemed in complete disarray. Everything around us seemed chaotic with no "method to the madness." Our server was pleasant and knowledgeable. The same can not be said about our friends at neighboring tables. Our food was excellent and timely. Prepare to wait. We sat down at 8:50 for a 7:45 reservation. Maybe we just chose an "off night" and they were a bit short staffed."

  • "Hank's was our favorite of several fine dining experiences in Charleston last week. The bouillabaisse came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Full of fresh shrimp, clams, scallops, oysters and of course fish with fresh well seasoned broth. Well made cocktails with a diverse wine list."

  • "Of all the choices in Charleston, it was nice to land here on a busy Saturday night. The care and attention given, made for a pleasurable dining experience. The food is the WOW factor here. Cheers!"

  • "The only thing that marred our dining experience here was the unforgivably long wait beyond our reservation time before we got a table. We arrived right on time for our 8:30 PM reservation and were told it would be about a 10 minute wait. We went to the bar and ordered wine and, after 20 minutes, checked back with the hostess. She told us the diners at the table we were to have were lingering but we should be seated soon. At 9:10 PM we checked again and told the hostess we would be leaving if we were not seated right away. Finally, at 9:15 PM, 45 minutes after our reservation time, we got our table. The waiter was very apologetic and comped us two more glasses of wine. Excellent food and service, but the wait was frustrating."

  • "We used to live in Charleston and while we were visiting last week, an out of town friend wanted to go out for seafood. Hank's was the first place that came to mind. We made reservations which was the right thing to do as the place is always busy. (Even on Sunday night.) The food was outstanding. I ordered a Hank's Classic "Seafood a la Wando", which was superb. Always a winner!"

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed Hanks! Food was amazing and the seafood was fresh. Will definitely be back."

  • "We had heard Hank's had the best seafood in town...unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype. The peel and eat shrimp were as expected, the shrimp and grits were yummy but the bouillabaisse left a lot to be desired. I do give them props for their pecan pie and key lime pie though. Next time we come to town we might stop back in but I doubt it."

  • "My husband and I had a delicious meal, the best scallops I have ever had. They were done to perfection, loved them. My husband had the salmon which was equally excellent."

  • "Hanks has been a favorite of mine for years. However, our last visit was forgettable. There was nothing special or outstanding about our dinners. In fact, we sent back a SALAD. It was tasteless and lackluster, despite being featured as a special. There are so many great restaurants in Charleston. Sadly, this is no longer one of them."
