Four of us went to Hanks last weekend...first visit for all of us...a friend had strongly recommended we go. It was outstanding. While busy and noisy, we were lucky to have a both on the side out of the center of the action. Our server, Jamison, was truly excellent. She was friendly, knowledgeable, took all four orders without writing a word. We each had a different, wine, appetizer, and entree and it all arrived perfectly. We will definitely return the next time we are in Charleston.

Very disappointed. I had the roasted grouper and it was overcooked and chewy. I was not sure how this was supposed to be as I was never there before. They use red grouper and that is the bottom of the line with grouper. After I complained to the waiter and said we are paying for it, could you let someone know of my complaint. Not one person came to ask us if there was anything they could do, like a free dessert or drink for the bad meal. It wasn't until we were leaving that I told the hostess. Then the manager came and talked with me. I told him that he was practicing poor management. The customer should have been acknowledged. He agreed and still never did anything, will not recommend this place.

Hanks is always on our reservation list when we head for Charleston. Great service, great food choices and great choices for wines. My wife ordered the Salmon and was very pleased. As usual I order one of the fried combinations and was not disappointed. The fried oysters were superb. No wonder Hanks keeps coming up on top.

As first-timers to Charleston, we were told the "place to go" was Hank's Seafood. How disappointing. Food was OK, but way over priced, even for the city center. Similarly, the atmosphere was chaotic and hurried. Too loud for a "fine dining" experience. I'd just as soon eat at a Red Lobster. Plenty of other reasonable, high-quality offerings in Charleston to try first.

2 of us were especially happy with our choices, 2 others (who chose the same dish) said it was 'ok'. Wine list over priced- a wine we had the evening before at another respected local restaurant was $32. It was $50 at Hanks. Found it in a local grocery the next day for $19.

We love Hank's and take anyone who's visiting us in Charleston for the first time to Hank's - it never disappoints. There's good reason it has been voted the #1 Seafood Restaurant in Charleston 15 years in a row, it hits all the right notes, never a problem. I don't know how they do it but if you make a ressie for 8, you'll be seated at 8, period, no excuses. We have gone downtown with the intent to try someplace new and found ourselves saying, "Let's just go to Hank's and try to get seats at the communal table," which has always worked for us, and bonus: it's fun! You get to meet locals and tourists alike, it's in the bar and the food and service are the same you'd get at a reserved table. Go to Hank's, you'll never be disappointed!

Some friends of our recommended Hanks, so we went there our first night in Charleston. I had the tuna and I must say it was the best fish I have ever eaten (and I lived near Destin Florida for almost 40 years). My wife had the broiled seafood platter and it was delicious (we couldn't finish all of the food). The next day we came back for the banana cream pie (very good). Service was great, the waiters all dressed up in their white outfits, a very nice evening. Thanks Hanks.

If you're looking for some trendy bizarre treatment of seafood--go somewhere else. But if you want great broiled and fried seafood with so many choices you can't pick, then this is the place for you. The service was fast and professional (sort of reminiscent of Antoine's in New Orleans). The remolaude with the calamari and shrimp had just the right kick to it. Oysters on the half shell were a good size. Although tastes differ, everyone in our party found something to rave about. The brownie dessert was excellent. The place was hopping on a Sunday night, so get your reservations in. Do yourself a favor and wear something nicer than jeans, it will add to your experience!

Truly an excellent reataurant all around! I booked this restaurant based on reviews and the two dollar sign rating ($$) it had. We had been to an expensive steak house the night before and wanted to spend less on this night. My husband and I each had an appetizer and an entree; we drank water; our bill was just over $100 without tip. The two dollar sign icon was very misleading so just be prepared to spend closer to $$$$ .

I was really looking forward to the dining experience but now I'm not sure I'll ever go back. It was my wife's birthday and we were seated at a small rectangular table but we couldn't even hear each other because the ambient noise was SO loud. The server was great (Casey) but we found ourselves waiting longer than normal between each course. I'm not sure why they asked about special occasions when making reservations, because they never acknowledged my wife's birthday. We skipped dessert because we couldn't wait to get of there.

Reservations are a must. We made reservations about 1 1/2 months in advance for a Friday night at 7:45. The seafood here is fresh and delicious. Although they do have a section of the menu devoted to fried seafood (which is the norm for the south) there are many other options. The swordfish and grouper were delicious and well prepared. My husband ordered Bouillabaise at the suggestion of the waiter and he was delighted. We all had appetizers - crab salad that included about 1/3 pound of crabmeat, shrimp cocktail was large and juicy and tuna tartare that was uniquely southwestern. Although busy, our waiter was attentive, knew the menu, and was a delight to talk with. He truly made our dining experience one to remember.

We had a 7pm reservation on a Friday but this place was standing room only and we didn't get seated until 7:30. This is a big, open room; noisy, tables jammed together, action packed, with wait staff frantically pirouetting around one another in the narrow aisles. Our waiter was distracted--perhaps he was trying to serve too many tables--and neglected to place our order for oysters so we didn't get to try them. Food was good, prices a bit high when compared to other similar restaurants nearby.

Hanks is a popular casual restaurant in the historic district with a broad selection of Charleston basic seafood and other typical entrees. The food is very good and although it would probably fit into a four star category in other cities, for Charleston I would place it in the upper 3 star. The busy atmosphere is geared to groups and good times rather than couples seeking a dining experience. The service was also in an upper three star category ... polite but trying to wait on too many tables. I certainly recommend Hanks for small groups and a good time. Our seafood tower was great with large shrimp, salty sweet oysters, and tasteful clams. The crab cakes and grouper were also above Charleston average.

We were lucky enough to reserve a table the day of via OpenTable. Based on tripadvisor reviews,we decided to give it a try. I commented on the reservation it was our anniversary, and to our surprise we were seated in a very large, spacious booth when we arrived. We shared fried calamari as an appetizer and for our entrees my husband had the Beef Tenderloin with bleu cheese mashed potatoes and onions and added a side of grits. I chose the Seafood Al A Wando, which for the portion, looked small, but had a delicious flavor. As an added touch they brought out a complimentary glass of champagne for is both. A parking garage is adjacent to the restaurant; have the exact amount needed;no change back :( Great for a special occassion!

We are local. My favorite restaurant in all of Charleston. Good pricing and portions. Moderate noise level. Great Raw Bar. Came for anniversary. Didn't disappoint. Had a wonderful time and although, at first, I didn't want to sit at a 2-top so close to others, it turned out to be a great time with out of towners. Even had another couple celebrating their anniversary too, so I shared my flowers. Server even brought a vase (glass) for her to put the flower in.
