A word from Hana Japanese Restaurant
Here at Hana Japanese Restaurant we will be introducing the authentic style of traditional sushi, Japanese cuisine, and wine-friendly foods. We stick to the fresh seasonal fish from Japan that is imported daily and the freshly grown local vegetables and meat. We also have local Napa Valley and Sonoma County Wine and chilled or warm sake that our chef hand-selects from Japan.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I'd heard a lot about Hana over the years, but somehow never gotten down to Rohnert Park to try it. I'd gotten the impression that it was sort of a yuppie place where they all congratulate each other on their superior taste. I finally got in there this past Tuesday, and I'm happy to admit that my impression was wrong. Our server, Emily, was delightful, the ambiance was tasteful, quiet and low-key, and the sushi world class. I've been eating sushi since 1970, and this is possibly the best I've ever had! The hirame and hiramasu were wonderful, the spider roll superb, and the STC roll (Spicy Tuna California roll) sublime. Go! But go early. You won't be disappointed. And if you are, you need to get your tastebuds recalibrated."

  • "We celebrated my wife's Bday. Everything was ready. The server was nice, knowledgeable and quick. We tried numerous types of meals. Food was excellent, sushi and nigiri - outstanding. My friend ordered oysters - they had several types and very fresh and tasty. Everyone of us was happy. Thank you!"

  • "We had always heard great things about Hana - many of them from our friends who are chefs (one of them is Michelin-rated). We love sushi, sashimi and fine sake, so we chose this as a birthday celebration destination for us and two of our friends. We let the experts guide us. The sake sommelier recommended different sake throughout the course of the meal and it was always perfect. We requested chef's choice for sushi, nigiri and sashimi. Everything looked beautiful and tasted wonderful. Dessert included house made sorbet and black sesame ice cream - incredible! We loved it; highly recommend!"

  • "This restaurant is tucked away in an office complex adjacent to the Doubletree Hotel, in Rohnert Park.Go,find it!We had crispy fresh crab cakes on micro greens, lovely contrasts and flavors.Liked the kabobed chicken skewers. But loved loved the Mayatake Mushrooms tempura.Large earthy fingers of umami flavors in crisp hot batter with a fresh radish condiment.Utterly delicious. Our daughter had a beautiful rainbow roll with a sprinkling of orange caviar. She loved it.Ambiance is serene with heated seat in the bathroom! Can't wait to go back.Service was warm, friendly and helpful."

  • "We went to this restaurant before attending a concert at Green Center. Even with our reservation well in advance, there was no table ready and our choice was to sit a crowded uncomfortable sushi bar or wait for a table. We opted to wait so that we could have a decent conversation but then felt very hurried all through dinner. My friend had one glass of a middling chardonnay, I had no drink. We ordered one small seaweed salad, one cup of miso soup and three orders of sushi (note, this is three small pieces of sushi each). We skipped dessert as we were really late for our show but the bill still came to $50 with tip. If I'd had time, I would have asked if they mixed our bill with a larger group table. Insane to pay that much for sushi."

  • "This place is just so good! Fresh flown in fish, great service, great sake. We drive from Napa all the time to get our Sushi here!"

  • "Our first time, we took our in laws. There were four of us. Although the good was grest as well as the service, the small table for the four of us left us feeling cramped and a bit claustrophobic. My husband requested to have a smaller table added to ours and our server checked and was given the ok! What a difference! If they had denied our request we prob would not return. The evening was SO much better after that! What a great night!"

  • "Hana takes pride in it's wide selection of fresh fish for dishes and sushi/sashimi. We agree that the menu is very impressive. Our only concern was that on a Green Music Center concert night, the crowd and pace was challenging. Our dishes arrived in erratic order, due to the kitchen and fresh fish sushi bar not being in sync., so just be prepared. The food was fresh and good. I did try the Hana special sashimi salad especially to try the Yuzu dressing and I could hardly taste any flavor beyond oil and maybe a little vinegar. Disappointing."

  • "Reservations recommended on weekend. Sushi was incredible and they had an extensive fresh selection that changes daily. If you like to eat a lot of sushi with saki it gets expensive quickly."

  • "We've been wanting to dine at Hana ever since we learned that Zagat had rated it highly. When we had an occasion to visit the Santa Rosa area, we made sure to book a table. We weren't disappointed. The food, including traditional Japanese specialties as well as a variety of more unusual fare, was excellent and beautifully presented. Our waiter was prompt, efficient, and knew his sake. Obviously, the word has gotten out because the place was jammed on an ordinary Monday evening--people without reservations had a long wait for a table. There are just two small dining rooms and a sushi bar that seats maybe eight people. If you don't mind eating early, it's best to book before 6:30 pm to avoid some of the crowd that piles in later."

  • "Best Japanese food I've had in years! Every bite was a delight. Try the maitake tempura! Excellent sushi, amazing selection of sake, knowledgeable waiter took great care of us. Pricey but worth it; can't wait to go back!"

  • "We've been going to Hana for several years. The sushi and sashimi are always made with the freshest fish. The service is very accommodating. It's the best japanese Restaurant we've been to in Sonoma and Marin Counties."

  • "Usually have wonderful sushi, but decided to try regular menu. The two pork dishes ordered by our table were overcooked. Otherwise, everything was excellent as usual."

  • "I have lunch at Hana on my bus driving break between Fort Bragg and Santa Rosa at least twice a month. It is also my favorite place to meet bay area friends for a meal. Always perfect."

  • "The food was very good but there was such a large crowd the night we were there that it detracted from really enjoying the restaurant. Not the fault of the restaurant. There was a big event at the Green Center and Rohnert Park really doesn't have much in the way of good restaurants to accomodate the influx of visitors."

  • "We are frequent HANA attendees. This is the best Japanese restaurant outside of Japan. (we have been there and many other Asian countries). We would recommend this to anyone interested in the best Sushi possible, creative presentations, and surprisingly - Ken the Chef/Owner is also quite a traditional chef having some very exceptional dessert offerings and blending his skill in other remarkable dishes (such as his short ribs, pork belly, etc.)"

  • "A few years ago we tried this restaurant and were greatly unimpressed. Thought we'd try again to see if time improved it. No way! The hostess was glued to her computer screen and didn't bother to acknowledge with even a grunt. When we told her we had reservations she did not welcome us but just perfunctorily led us to a table. Waitress was friendly, but not very experienced. Still, we really came for the food. Big mistake. The tempura was RUBBERY. All three sashimi selections were SOFT, almost soggy. Needless to say our next visit will be after we hear that there is new ownership. Oh, also the prices are steep."

  • "Hana was recommended to us a couple years ago when we were moving into the area. They have fresh, delicious sushi and we have enjoyed every meal. There is a huge selection of Saki. It is a bit pricey although you get what you pay for."

  • "Were in the area and decided to try this place again since the last time was about 15 years ago. Place was full and energetic, what I noticed was there were a lot of people that just ordered a few pieces and left, since while we were there the tables next to us, turned twice during our stay. Raw oysters and clams were very good, total of 9 pieces for 22 bucks, we then ordered about 8 pairs of negiri and when presented immediately saw that we would have to supplement with some thing else since they were about half the size of what we are use to at other sushi restaurants. They are also 2 to 3 dollars more than other places. with 4 little servings of sake our bill was $240, kinda high when compared with SF and other venues."

  • "My wife spent 3 years in Japan and I've always searched for authentic Japanese food. We always have the chef's choice sushi and have always been blown away by the freshness, texture, etc. The prices are quite reasonable. It's in a weird, strip mall and is pretty non-descript on the outside. Service is OK. Everything tastes a bit weird...meaning I've never had it before so it must be authentic. My wife assures me that this is how it tastes in Japan. For a similar, reasonable priced, more home cooking experience in the Bay Area, we've always gone to Gombei and ordered off of the chalk board/daily menu."

  • "Well worth a trip out of your way. Some of the best dishes I've had in the Bay Area, served by super knowledgeable, mature, friendly individuals. Black cod is amazing, noodles outstanding, teriyaki excellent, tempura perfect, pickles great. Generous portions, very fair prices. Don't miss the homemade black sesame ice cream. Their sake collection is wonderful, managed by a sake sommelier, though all staff are knowledgeable. It is a treat and honor to dine here."

  • "Unfortunately since Hana is a distance from our home we don't get here often but we were happy to find it remains the same Outstanding Japanese restaurant we have found in the past. It would be hard to find a match for the knowledgeable staff, super authentic food and extensive Sake list . Love it !"

  • "We make a special point when we visit San Francisco and the wine country north to enjoy the incredible selection of fish that is offered here. We sit at the sushi bar and just ask just to be served. It's always fabulous! Not only is the sashimi top notch but this is a place when you only come once every 2 years you still feel welcomed."

  • "I had been dying to eat at Hana for years, so I finally made the not-so-far drive to Rohnert Park from Napa this past Sunday. Stuart, the sake sommelier, greeted us at the door and proceeded to seat us near the sushi bar. We arrived at 6:00pm and it was full, but the noise level was extremely quiet. He made some awesome sake suggestions and the food came out in a timely fashion. The quality of the fish was INCREDIBLE and I especially loved the mirugai, ike hotate and ika sashimi. Other super dishes were the grilled Hokkaido ika, Hawaiian style tako poke and tempura hirame-wrapped uni. The flavors were bold and spot on. Prices are higher than other sushi restaurants, but with the quality of the seafood being this good, it is worth it!"

  • "Whenever we're in the area, we always eat dinner at Hana's. We recommend it to all our Bay Area friends, too. Our daughter is a student at SSU so it's her treat when we visit. We even got her picky roommate to love Japanese food. Our server made some fabulous recommendations. Of course, she was kind to point out that one of the fish was running low. My husband didn't take the hint, and when he finally ordered it, it was too late. I always start with the Uniten roll for myself. However, everyone at the table always helps themselves so I only get one piece. My husband orders all the fresh fish sushi, including the uni. My husband is going to try to Omikase next time!"

  • "We had a lovely birthday dinner for our daughter at Hana over the weekend. The service was exemplary, matched by the amazing level of the dishes and sushi. We ordered dishes off the Osusume menu- the steamed Dashi and Uni custard and the Tokyo Pancake. This is what sets Hana apart from your typical Japanese restaurant- this chance to experience these authentic and extraordinary bits of Japanese gastronomy. Our daughter enjoyed the high level of sushi, and the less adventurous of the bunch thoroughly enjoyed the tempura, teriyaki, and sukiyaki."
