A word from Hamersley's Bistro
Gordon and Fiona Hamersley have owned one of Boston's most popular restaurants for 20 years. Hamersley's Bistro serves contemporary, full-flavored French/Mediterranean food in a relaxed environment. Located in the fashionable South End, Hamersley's is adjacent to the Boston Center for the Arts and its' affiliated theaters and galleries. The historic brick building, which originally housed a piano factory, has been transformed into one of Boston's most comfortable dining atmospheres. The dining room has butter yellow walls, exposed beams and a view of the open kitchen so diners can watch the chefs work in their brightly colored baseball caps. There is also a cozy bar, where neighborhood regulars gather for food and drinks, as well as a large patio for casual summer dining.Continued

  • "Delicious, first class experience. Too bad the restaurant is closing. It will be missed by many. Hats of to Gordon Hamersley"

  • "Great as always . We will miss Gordon and Fiona. A real loss."

  • "We hadn't been to Hamersley's in several years, trying new places here and there. But when we read that Hamersley's was closing, we thought we ought to head back. But oh, what we've missed. Hamersley's famous roast chicken (with lemon and garlic) is even more wonderful than I'd remembered. The appetizers were superb, the dessert sublime. And the service a model of perfection (thank you, Luis!). So it was a wonderful dining experience. But to quote the people at the next table: Where are we going to go when Hamersley's is gone?"

  • "I had to try this place before it closed soon since it is considered an institution in the city. I was not disappointed. The food was great (we had to try the chicken dish of course) and so was the staff. Our waiter told us they might be doing a "greatest hits" menu soon. Hopefully I can come again before they close."

  • "Outstanding every time. Never a complaint in all these years. Too sad for words about the impending closing. We will be lost without our old friend."

  • "Gordon's chicken is amazing, the service was excellent and a nice ambience we were in the bar overlooking the patio as it was closed. A wonderful evening."

  • "Food was outstanding - wonderful - not crazy - combinations of tastes and cooked to perfection. Service friendly and attentive but not intrusive. Wonderful dining experience, highly recommended. No, it's not inexpensive. This is really a case of getting what you pay for."

  • "What more can anyone say after 27 years of some of the best cooking in the city, and in the USA.. they are sadly now closing at the end of October 2014 :(. Get here for you first or last time here ASAP- the house standards of roasted chicken and garlic and mushroom sandwich will blow you away! Excellent ambiance, service, and of course the nightly sight of a legend - Gordon Hamersley in view in open kitchen with the red sox hat. A Boston institution that lives up to its well deserved reputation!!!!"

  • "As this restaurant is closing due to owners retirement I was happy to be able to cross off my bucket list. I was everything I heard and thought it would be"
    Dined on 8/17/2014
  • "We were initially seated inside because the outside wait we were told was up to an hour. I was disappointed with the ambiance inside - it was bright, loud, and not at all the romantic bistro feel I had imagined. I asked for recommendations on a glass of Rose and our waiter brought me a taste of one he recommended - unfortunately it wasn't quite my style. I told him more what i was looking foe, asked if he recommended another - but he just seemed bothered and said he'd give a minute to figure it out. This happened twice. He seemed too busy with other tables to take an interest & provide us decent service. Thankfully we ended up being able to get an outdoor table and enjoy the rest of our evening with great food & much better service outside."

  • "Fabulous dinner! Hammersley's will be a very fond memory. Thank you for many years of memorable meals and happy times!"

  • "Although the salmon in parchment wasn't up to the usual high standards of Hammersley's, the signature dish, chicken, certainly was. This is a wonderful restaurant, a real neighborhood gem, and it will be sorely missed when Gordon and Fiona close the doors come October. I live right across the street and love this place. The South End will not be the same without Hammersley's/"

  • "Everything was perfect!!!!! Returning with every opportunituy I have prior to Hamersley's Bistro changing ownership/chef in late October."

  • "I went into to Hamersley's with very high expectations and the first bite of the Roast chicken alone blew me away. Literally out of this world taste experience."

  • "We sat in a quiet area of the restaurant and it was lovely. The wine list is great and reasonably priced. Outstanding menu--wish we could have tried everything. We live out of town so we will not be able to eat here again before it closes. :( So glad we tried the Garlic Chicken. It was AMAZING!"

  • "Alas, the only reservation we could get was for 8:30. Although Gordon had roasted 90 of his famous chickens, our delightful server told us they were gone by 8. We feasted on excellent steak, pork, salmon, ratatouille, and made a new reservation for 5:30 in the near future."

  • "In Boston on business and went with clients to Hamersleys. Had the tomatoes with avocado (outstanding) and the famous roasted chicken. The chicken is unforgettable, and who says that about chicken? Service was super - attentive and pleasant. Had blueberry buckle and strawberry shortcake at the table. You can't go wrong with anything. So sorry to hear restaurant is closing now that I've just found it."

  • "I've eaten several times at Hamersly's and each time is a delight. The food is splendidly creative, the wines subtly complementary. The service is helpful but always unobtrusive. The space is bright and cheerful in the daytime, elegant at night. It's impossible to ignore the obvious delight of one's table companions or of other tables' diners."

  • "Had a great dinner there Saturday night. Fabulous food and waitstaff!"
    Dined on 8/9/2014
  • "The food was outstanding, but we probably had bad luck with our waiter. For instance, we were a group and were leaning toward reasonably priced wine and he more bluntly suggested the high end of the range (waiters usually understand tradesoffs between price and value, which we asked for his help with, but which he didn't provide). He was aloof during the entire meal and at dessert time, literally stuck the menu 2 inches from our guests' faces when passing them around. We live a short walk from the restaurant and would like to say we would come here again and again, but without consistently outstanding service, we are more likely to try other neighborhood gems when we have guests visiting."

  • "I had been looking forward to trying this place for a while now, so I was upset that it didn't come close to meeting my expectations. The corn potage was horribly bland and reminiscent of baby food. Their "famous" roast chick was dry with soggy skin. The halibut was oddly flavored and hard to finish... So I left most of it on my plate. We decided to skip dessert after being let down with every bite thus far, so needless to say, we won't be returning ever."

  • "Still one of the consistently best restaurants in Boston. I have been a long time customer and continue to be impressed with the wonderful food. I had the chicken last night. I think it has been on the menu since they opened. It was delicious. As was they steak and the vegetarian offering."

    Dined on 8/6/2014
  • "Hamersley's Bistro is still the best restaurant in Boston's South End, and in the top five city wide. Superb food, excellent service, and a menu that pleases almost everyone. It's my go-to place for special occasions. It's not all that pricy for what you get."

  • "We are not patient when it comes to being seated for dinner and so always have a reservation, but the 25 minute wait for a patio table was worth it on a lovely August night. The sparkling lights and being secluded from the busy street really added to the ambiance. Most importantly, the food was spectacular! Three of us ordered the salmon in parchment and it was scrumptious and cooked to perfection. We've never had a bad meal here."

  • "The roast chicken here is one of the most memorable fishes I have enjoyed for many years."

  • "From the efficient valets, welcoming hostess, great table to the excellent service - this place never fails. And yeah - food and wine were great. Great option for outdoor dining as well."

  • "We were visiting Boston and went to hamersley on our second night. It was a nice evening and we decided to eat outside. It is set on a small triangular park off Tremont Street and is more private than you think, while still providing a great view of the street. Our waiter was exceptional. Friendly, informative and professional. We split a Lobster Waffle as an appetizer. Simply, it was incredible. We split the roast chicken, which is a house specialty. It was plenty for 2 and wonderful. Desert was the trio of chocolate that was out of this world. It included the freshest mint chocolate chip ice cream we had ever tasted. Overall, it was outstanding."

  • "...is always SO GOOD! Yum. Generous portion on the tomato/avocado/feta salad. My out-of-town food-snob-like friends loved their meals."

  • "We were delighted to sit outside and eat at Hamersley's. We all remarked how we felt we were in another part of the world! Three of us ordered Hamersley's signature chicken entree and one had salmon specially prepared in parchment. Triple chocolate desert was shared by all! Night could not have been better."

  • "Hammersley's Bistro is a fantastic restaurant. Both the food and service are always great! I had a small artichoke and goat cheese appetizer, and my husband had a delicious avocado and tomato salad. For entrées, I ordered the signature dish which is the lemon chicken. Is it is a half a chicken roasted with lemon and garlic, and it is something that everyone dreams about because it's so delicious! My husband had a pork entrée which he really enjoyed. It was pork two ways. We highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "We have been to Hammersley's Bistro many times over the years, dating back to when the restaurant was in its original location a few blocks away. We hadn't been in a few years, and returned for our anniversary, and I am pleased to say that it is as wonderful as ever! The food is still as outstanding as ever. The service this time was equally outstanding, our waiter was very pleasant. Hammersley's is a restaurant that I can recommend very highly!"
