A word from Hamersley's Bistro
Gordon and Fiona Hamersley have owned one of Boston's most popular restaurants for 20 years. Hamersley's Bistro serves contemporary, full-flavored French/Mediterranean food in a relaxed environment. Located in the fashionable South End, Hamersley's is adjacent to the Boston Center for the Arts and its' affiliated theaters and galleries. The historic brick building, which originally housed a piano factory, has been transformed into one of Boston's most comfortable dining atmospheres. The dining room has butter yellow walls, exposed beams and a view of the open kitchen so diners can watch the chefs work in their brightly colored baseball caps. There is also a cozy bar, where neighborhood regulars gather for food and drinks, as well as a large patio for casual summer dining.Continued

  • "It was our first time to Hamersley's and we really enjoyed the food and experience. We sat outside and had great service and a wonderful evening."

  • "It was excellent food. We loved the atmosphere outside. Virgin mojitos were outstanding. Duck confit was excellent. Pork, quail, and beef were outstanding"

  • "We had a wonderful anniversary dinner ---- my favorite was the lobster waffle appetizer --- and then the quail....We waited a bit for our first course , but the bread was good and the wine was delicious!! My husband had blackened bluefish and loved that as well...No room for dessert, unfortunately!!No wonder this restaurant has been around for so long!!!"

  • "The owner chef came out to meet me. I was dining alone. I requested a chef tasting meal. The dishes were amazing!!! The service and ambience were perfect. My husband and I travel often and seek out restaurants with high ratings and "must go" establishments. Needless to say, I am looking forward to returning Hamersley's and Boston with my husband and share my new favorite destination restaurant. The lemon chiffon dessert, tomato caprese appetizer, chicken garlic, rabbit pâté, lobster salad with wasabi, hmm just to name some dishes that were out of this world. Thank you Hamersley's for the delicious memories and a reason to return to Boston sooner than later."

  • "My husband & I had not been to Hamersley's in quite some time and we were very glad to see that the quality of this restaurant has not changed. The waitstaff were exceptional; friendly, helpful & attentive. The food was divine!!! Impeccably cooked, perfectly seasoned, beautifully presented. While this restaurant is pricey, if you want an excellent dining experience and want to celebrate a special occasion, this is the place to go in Boston!"

  • "Great restaurant with an outstanding reputation. Quite expensive for dinner but brunch an excellent opportunity to experience this restaurant."

  • "Very tasty food and beautifully served on our plates. Definitely a repeatable experience. The only disappointment was that we were expecting to sit outside on the lovely patio on a gorgeous summer night but our group of 8 was too large to be seated outside."

  • "enjoyed eating outside on a warm summer's night: thought the meal was not as good as we've had in the past"

  • "Awesome! We always go to Hamersley's when we want a special dining experience! Everything was excellent from the food to the service. Love this place!!!!!"

  • "Nothing overall wrong with this place, and the wine list was good, but it's just not a fun place. It might have been nicer if the outdoor patio was open, but inside was a noticeably older crowd and no one seems to be enjoying themselves. The food is good but not brilliant, considering the prices."

  • "Hammersley's has the feel of an elegant French bistro. Chicken is delicious!"
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "Lovely night. We ate outdoors. Very accommodating. Bluefish and chicken entrees were exceptional. The 3 part chocolate dessert was extremely enjoyable. The mint chocolate ice cream was amazing! We had not been there for many years and truly enjoyed our evening."

  • "Gordon never lets the quality of his bistro slip; even as the first customers on a Monday evening everything was outstanding! We dined on the last day of the Spring seasonal menu - I plan to return soon to see what's new for Summer."

  • "Hammersley's is one of the finest restaurants in Boston. Now, with outdoor seating, it is a wonderful, romantic summer venue. The food is always excellent, and the service is quick and polite. This is a great place for a celebration or a special night out."

  • "Mil and I took Katherine out for dinner in celebration for my 30 years in business. This upscale South Ender has been a Tremont Street staple for decades and has lost nothing in that time frame, from our first visit. Service was both friendly and efficient. We started with the duck confit app. The sherry aigre doux was the perfect foil to the richness of the duck. Mil and Katherine both ordered the classic chicken with garlic, lemon and parsley. Both enjoyed their bistro classic. I ordered the lamb with risotto which was done perfectly. A side of asparagus split three ways and a pecan pie with vanilla ice cream finished our celebratory meal and sent us all home happy."

  • "Gordon and Fiona Hamersley were pioneers when they opened their restaurant in Boston's then rough and tumble South End in the mid-80's. In no time, it became a mecca for foodies and and the restaurant press alike. Today, with sky high eal estate prices in the area setting records, Hamersley's continues to shine thanks to the chef's deft touch. No dish better exemplifies this than his signature roasted chicken. Classic, simple and yummy. Charred calamari salad with spring vegetables gets a nice zing from Morroccan spices. Entrees, sides, deserts are all perfectly executed in the French style. And service is top notch. If you're looking for a great meal, you can't go wrong with Hamersley's."

  • "It was a beautiful day to sit outside. The patio space is nicely shielded by flowers and fence so you can people watch while still feeling separate. The brunch menu had nice variety and was all very reasonably priced. Certainly comparable to other restaurants in the area. I had the poached eggs on English muffins, while my friend had the asparagus omelet. We shared fruit and the muffin of the day. Everything was perfectly prepared. Service was pleasant and for the most part efficient. Happy to be next door to the theater for Sunday matinee."

  • "Our group of 7 decided to go where 4 of us had gone on our last trip to Boston. That first visit had left us wanting more and this visit to Hamersley's lived up to its past performance. We all ordered different entrees and a number of appetizers and several desserts to share. We had cocktails, bottles of white and red, some after-dinner drinks and coffee service. Everything was wonderful. My lamb 3-ways was cooked perfectly and the olive risotto side was delicious. Everyone else was thrilled with their food. The wait-staff kept everything moving comfortably. This is a fun Bistro with great food. We will go there again next trip back."

  • "Great food and service. Love sitting out on the patio on a nice warm night. Dates wrapped in proscuito was excellent. I had the lamb which was outstanding. My wife had the lobster special which she loved. Always a great evening. Never lets me down."

  • "Loved our dinner . ...the summer menu has lots of creative new things."

  • "Five of us went to pre-theater at Hammersley's and loved it. We ate in the little dining room facing the street, although we did have the option of dining outdoors on the patio or in the main dining room. It felt just a little chilly outdoors that evening. The room is pleasant. Decor of the entire restaurant is lovely. The wait staff and hostess were terrific and the food and drinks just perfect. We have been here before and have always had a good experience. There are fewer tables in the little dining room, providing a more intimate ambiance. Hammersley's is a good choice for many reasons: the great food, service, location and atmosphere. It is easy to hold a conversation over dinner. Highly recommended!"

  • "The best roast chicken ever. Excellent all around, close to the Calderwood Theater."

  • "On a late afternoon in winter, the sun pours in through huge west-facing windows and you feel a tremendous sense of well being. In summer, there's a generous en plein air situation in front, and the surrounding views of this unique 18th century environment will transport you to another time. That's before you even get started on the menu, which I recommend you check out beforehand so you won't get too lost in trying to figure out your order. I was there the other day with my husband, his brother, and their father, who all live far away, and it's not something we get to do often enough, so our choice of venue was important. I was so proud to be able to take them here; everything about it is just sheer perfection."

  • "Hamersley's has been a long time favorite. The menu changes and the meal preparation is outstanding. During my last visit, however, the service was surprisingly below par. Although the waitress was very informative and responsive, the seating was poor and the other attendants to the table were sloppy. We reserved a table for 5 a week in advance. When we arrived we were seated at a table for 4 with an extra plate added as the table was along the bench seat on the wall. For 5 people it was unacceptable and awkward. The server who kept interrupting the dinner to fill water glasses spilled water on sleeves and clothes without thought or apology. It clearly was not up to my expectations for Hamersley's. It spoiled an otherwise great dining event"

  • "The service at Hamersley's was reasonable, but the food was just fair. One of our party had a beet appetizer where you could hardly find the beet, and also she had a very spicy chicken dish. It left her with heart burn throughout the night. Another person in the party had an extremely spicy calamari salad...so much so that it was sent back. I would not recommend Hamersley's any longer. There are many more good restaurants around the South End."

  • "The South End (where I live) is known for its many good and lively restaurants, but Hamersley's, located almost next door to the Arts Complex and its theaters, is the best. The food is top notch, service excellent, and noise level well below some of those where it is difficult to have a conversation. While I like other restaurants, they are either not as consistent in quality or simply very noisy."

  • "My husband and I recently enjoyed brunch on both Easter Sunday and Father's Day. on both occasions, I requested a quiet table, which surprisingly we were able to get both times. Food was excellent both times, as was the service. Menus were different - an upcharge for a limited prix fixe menu on Easter, and regular brunch menu on Father's Day."

  • "I'm an infrequent visitor to Boston, but when there I like to try new/different places. Hamersley's Bistro is fun and great ... can't believe it's taken me over 6 months to run across it. (My OpenTable app seems to filter it out on distance grounds when it shouldn't.) Variety of people and a real positive, happy vibe. And great food. Will go back many times, and will promote it with my friends!"

  • "5 showed for our reservation of 8. 3 folks missed out terribly! Duck Confit app was a superb starter. Halibut was exceptional. Lamb 3 ways(my choice) was the best lamb dish I've ever had. Gordon's Chicken was up to it's usual flare! Stags Leap Cab went well with all. Sadly, we had no room for desert! Hamersly's Rocks."

  • "I have loved this restaurant for many years. Mostly I go for dinner, have had brunch here once before and it was excellent. This time, the weather was perfect, so we were able to sit in the very pleasant outdoor seating area. The food, though, wasn't as good as I've come to expect. I ordered an asparagus salad with hard-boiled eggs. The dressing was bland, their wasn't much too it. My husband had an omelet, which he said was just okay. Not the "something special" we've come to expect from Hamersley's."
