A word from Hamersley's Bistro
Gordon and Fiona Hamersley have owned one of Boston's most popular restaurants for 20 years. Hamersley's Bistro serves contemporary, full-flavored French/Mediterranean food in a relaxed environment. Located in the fashionable South End, Hamersley's is adjacent to the Boston Center for the Arts and its' affiliated theaters and galleries. The historic brick building, which originally housed a piano factory, has been transformed into one of Boston's most comfortable dining atmospheres. The dining room has butter yellow walls, exposed beams and a view of the open kitchen so diners can watch the chefs work in their brightly colored baseball caps. There is also a cozy bar, where neighborhood regulars gather for food and drinks, as well as a large patio for casual summer dining.Continued

Went for my birthday brunch and had family friends drive in. from out of state. Food was good but nothing special. Only thing that sticks out is the orange juice, which was delicious."

  • "I used to go to the old location where you were frozen out in winter! Been coming here on and off. The quality of the food is really very good and reliable. The wine list should be expanded to additional mid price quality wines. The outstanding dishes are still outstanding but much more reliably so. The venue is really superb, love the vibe, the colors, the layout. Service was good but could be more engaging- was professional."

  • "First let me say, that i am well traveled and a wine professional. A foodie at a stratospheric level. My second visit here was as exceptional as the first. Same server! Seven people celebrating my son's acceptance to college. Every dish on the table was exceptional- World class chicken, Venison, fish, chicken liver, lobster waffle, including a very interesting upscale version of deviled eggs. Dessert - Best pecan pie I can remember! The service was so friendly and thoughtful, makes me want to go back ASAP. While not in-expensive, I give Hamersley's my highest compliment; THIS PLACE OFFERS HUGE VALUE. Really delivers."

  • "The food was very good, tasty and inventive. Service was attentive and the half-bottle collection was reasonable. I was not happy with where we were seated. Seating in restaurants is becoming as obscure and non-transparent as airline seating. There were quite a few empty tables for two, yet we were given very few rather uncomfortable choices. Is it the fact that we made reservations on OpenTable? Whom does one have to bribe or know to get a decent table in this town?"

  • "I have eaten here several times and love the food. This time was no different with the food- excellent. However, the service was terrible and was not the level of service you would expect for the prices. We went on a week night; it was busy but there were empty tables. Our waiter seemed uninterested; when I asked a question he misheard me and barked back something that didn't make sense. He then constantly rushed us. We were not even on dessert yet when he asked if we had used the valet (we had) and asked for the valet slip to get our car. In the middle of dessert he told us that they didn't like the car sitting out on the street- it was clear that he wanted us to leave. No one was waiting for a table. I won't be back."

  • "I had visited years ago as a business dinner and had positive memories, but it was even better than I had remembered when we ate there as a family last night. First, the food tasted great. Every item was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the Kale salad. Second, the service was great. We mentioned when we arrived that we were headed for the theater next door for a 7:30 show and the server totally got it. Everything was prompt, he warned us away from one item because it took longer than average to prepare. We had intended to skip dessert, but the server was so on top of things we even had time for that. It is expensive though so be prepared. $60-$75 for 3 courses. There was a $42 prix fixed which we didn't try."

  • "The food at Hamersley's has a great reputation, and with good reason. My last visit, prior to this weekend, was five years ago, and they remain consistently strong in their food and service. I had the chicken liver appetizer and the quail entree, both were great. My boyfriend has a sensitivity to garlic, onions, etc. Going out to dinner can be risky as it's easy to forget that chives are onions, or that those are often components in stocks or sauces. The kitchen was very careful; my boyfriend had the arctic char and said it was one of the best meals he's ever had, and no adverse reactions! I know it can be annoying to deal with food allergies, but the whole staff was on top of its game and it was a great across the board"

  • "I've never had anything but a perfect dining experience at Hamersley's. The food is always excellent and beautifully presented. My three dining companions and I had four different starters, all delicious. For our entrees, I had a monkfish and mussel bourride, which very good, but also tried my companions' halibut and the famous roast chicken, both of which were superb -- especially the chicken, which I had never tried before but will definitely have on my next visit. It is worthy of all the acclaim it has received over the years. The wine list has lots of nice choices, and our dessert of apple upside down cake (adorned with candles to acknowledge birthdays), exquisite. Service, as always, was flawless. Can't wait to go back!"

I tried the walnut hummus and crispy pita chips, the inventive kale salad and the restaurant's famous chicken with lemon and garlic. My friend went with the halibut and clams and the winter green salad topped with breaded goat cheese. Every thing was quite yummy. The waiter was cheerful, helpful and attentive. The prices were on the steep side, but all in all, an enjoyable evening and very good meal. We dined there on a Sunday evening and I was surprised to see many tables of six men dining together!!"

  • "We had a similar experience to that of another reviewer. We were visiting Boston from out of town and selected HB after some research here and on a few other sites to celebrate my wife's birthday. We were seated upon arrival, were served water and then waited 15 minutes before I was able to flag someone down to get menus. Our server was covering at least 2 large tables and it resulted in long waits for anything for us. He did do a good job of explaining some of the dishes. We eat out a LOT and can appreciate fine cuisine but the wait between each course was ridiculous. My wife's birthday was never recognized until after we had paid the bill and were leaving."

  • "Wonderful meal. Very pleasant dining room, intimate without feeling crowded. Service was very professional and well-timed. Portions much larger than I remember, so come hungry. The four of us each ordered a small plate or appetizer, followed by a main course and shared one bottle of wine and one dessert. Stuffed silly. Each dish was exactingly seasoned with great balance in flavor and texture. Wine list is not extensive, but very reasonably matched to the menu offerings. We will certainly return!"

I'm a west coast resident and have been several times since the day you opened your door. The waitstaff is professional w/o being obtrusive nor stuffy. Maggie was perfect in her suggestions/descriptions as well as wine selection. The commitment to quality ingredients, sourcing local and staying true to ones beliefs is heartwarming. Plus it's always nice to see 'the man' in the kitchen! Hummus is velvety smooth with just a touch of lemon, kale salad lightly dressed with perfectly balanced flavors, and the quail was stellar in preparation. Awesome!"
