A word from Hal's - Buckhead
A restaurant that triumphs in taste over trend, Hal's is not the typical highbrow restaurant so often equated with food of this quality. It is a place of white table cloths, flowers, warm brick, & candlelight.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had reservations and were seated as soon as we arrived. A server greeted us at the table and said that a server would be with us shortly. After about 10 minutes I flagged down a server to place a drink order. I figured he would have immediately placed the drink order since it was alcohol but this wasn't the case. Another 5 minutes went by and I guess our designated server asked if we wanted to place a drink order, the guy I originally placed the drink order with came over and recited our drink order to our designated server. The food was good but there are a lot better places in Atlanta where the servers actually act like that you are there and the food is better. Have a large group or plan on bad service."

  • "Without doubt one of my favorite places in Atlanta. I don't get to town as often as I'd like but Hal's is always on the top of my list when in town. Great food, drinks and service. You won't be disappointed."

  • "I'm going to US already for several years and finish my travel always with the great filet mignon in the Hal's."

  • "We had not been to Hal's in 10 years since we live out of town but we enjoyed the great service and food. We sat upstairs at a table for five and the was no smoking from the bar."

  • "I had a reservation for Friday night. It was super crowded and most people were at the bar. We did not wait long and the food and service was great. Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I had to practically yell at each other to hear each other. I would go back another day, when it is not so crowded."

  • "The restaurant was too loud for me. The waiter seemed to be just doing a job rather than provide great service. Steak was excellent but a bit cool, not as hot as it should be."

  • "This place has a great ambiance, friendly hostesses, great servers, excellent food .. Our party really enjoyed finding this place - Looking forward to our next trip to Atlanta - well worth the time to enjoy a meal and drinks here at Hal's"

  • "Some of the best food (superb steak, creamed spinach, brabant potatoes, cheesecake with warm strawberries) in Atlanta. Some really powerful dishes-the Gumbo, Filet au Poivre, Bread pudding, etc. If it wasn't so cramped and noisy, it would be my favorite spot."
    Dined on 4/7/2014
  • "The Filet's were awesome but the ribeye needs an upgrade."

  • "The food was fantastic, worth every penny. The seating was tight and a little over crowded. For the prices I'd like a little more space. The AC was blowing right on me. The food made it all worth while."

  • "You go here for the steaks. Not for the atmosphere, not for the service, not for the view, not for the location. We had a regular filet, and a filet au poivre and shared between the two of us. This is what you should do when you eat here. The au poivre can be slightly overpowering if you have to eat the whole thing, but if you can switch back and forth between the pure beefiness of the "regular" filet and the spicy sauciness of the filet au poivre, you'll have your socks knocked right off. As for service, we had an 8:15 reservation and were seated around 9:10. No apologies, no explanation. That was fine, we had a couple of HUGE manhattans and waited in the bar. Service was the bare minimum for a meal of this price - unremarkable."

  • "Though our waiter was a bit un-attentive most of the time my wife and I had a great time."

  • "Had poorly cooked lamb chops that were poor even after I sent them back. They were simply a cheap cut of meat. Our waiter was obviously indifferent to the food quality and had no interest in understanding our concerns. No manager ever came by to look into our complaint. Hal you have lost that lovin feeling."

  • "Crawfish appetizer, veal piccata with pasta, rack of lamb with sautéed spinach and Makers Mark bread pudding for dessert was all outstanding."

  • "Had not eaten at Hal's before but chose it to celebrate a birthday on recommendation from friends. Everything was outstanding, from the food we ate to the expertise of the waiter and wine steward."

  • "The food, service and restaurant were incredible but it was extremely noisy. We sat at a small table but I had to tell to hear the other person in my party."

  • "Great place to mix and mingle at the bar and a great place for a good steak dinner. I would highly recommend this place for dinner especially if you love a good steak, the best."

  • "first time at Hal's and was brought wrong wine vintage year and sides didn't arrive with dinner; food was good but not outstanding; will go somewhere else the next time"

  • "We had reservations for 10:15pm & were seated promptly in the dining area across from the bar area. Restaurant was busy but not packed. Our waiter was experienced, very knowledgeable about the menu & wine list, & attentive without hovering. We both ordered the filet, & they arrived at our table cooked perfectly. Each steak came with one small side (we had creamed spinach and mashed potatoes) & ordered an additional side of asparagus that was large enough to share. Dinner was delicious; the only improvement would have been if we could have been seated further away from the live entertainment in the bar, as the volume made conversation a bit difficult. Our bill including wine/beer was around $130 before tip & we felt it was a good value."

  • "After wanting to go to Bones, was talked into Hal's for a reunion of work friends. I was surprised how small the place was and that people could smoke in the bar but after surveying the Scotch list, I was feeling we made the correct choice. They allowed us to sit early which was a relief to get away from the madness of the bar screen. When they brought my steak, that is when the event turned into a Five Star Night. The food was wonderful. I will certainly return."

  • "From the bar to our table through completion of our meal, Hal's staff did a wonderful job. We always love going!"

  • "Great place, but based on the crowd, I felt like they over-booked themselves. Great to be crowded, but not when it's uncomfortable."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "First off- dinner and waiter were both excellent. However I will not be returning due to the unbelievable rude staff. Had a friend decide to join us for a drink, hostess was not only unaccomodating but told us the restaurant was overbooked and if we didn't sit down right at the time of our reservation they would give our table away. I was surprised at this response so asked to speak to a manager. He told us they were overbooked and could not accomodate us. Undiscouraged, my friend borrowed a chair from the table next to us (there was plenty of room) and the manager pounced on her and asked them to leave. This would never have happened at Bones or Chops. Next time I'm going for a $300 dinner we will spend it elsewhere..."

  • "Went to Hal's for my wife's birthday, we had an 8:30 reservation, and we got there at about 8:20, but weren't seated until about 8:50. The bar area was extremely crowded, so that 30 minutes we had to wait was a bit frustrating as we were constantly knocked around by the boisterous crowd in the bar. Once seated, our server was fantastic, and the food was very good! Great salad, steak was cooked perfectly, and the sides (creamed spinach, cheddar mashed potatoes and truffle mac & cheese). Good wine selection by the glass too. Too full for dessert, but the meal was fantastic."

  • "If you are tired of the best steakhouses having a stuffy atmosphere, check out Hal's on Ivy. Still top notch in the areas of food and drink, this little restaurant offers a lively setting - which can border on noisy as the floor packs out. The bone-in filet was simple and flavorful, and make sure you try the mac and cheese with white truffle oil. Also start with the fried lobster special, if it is being offered. Finally, finish it all off with bread pudding. We will certainly be back."

  • "Had a great dinner at Hal's. Smoking bar was great. Food was delicious from sea bass to filets. Service was superb. Our ole' time favorite from anniversaries to dinner with friends. Can't go wrong with Hal's. 'Intimate' dinner at Hal's."

  • "This was our first visit to Hal's and it was amazing. There were 6 of us celebrating my daughter's 30th birthday and a special dinner was called for. Price was high, but so was value!! The service was excellent and the food was fantastic. All 6 had fabulous meals. Unfortunately the noise level was extremely high in the restaurant and we had to resort to shouting across the table to be heard but eventually died down and we were able to enjoy the meals and celebration. In spite of the noise, would highly recommend Hal's to others."

  • "Was in town on business from Orlando and took my wife to Hal's after a recommendation from a friend. I'm being serious when I tell you I had what was easily the best steak I've had in YEARS....and everything else was pretty close to perfect, too. It really was that good. Wonderful cozy atmosphere that was right up our alley; will for sure visit again the next time I'm in Atlanta. I couldn't recommend this place enough."

  • "Once again my guest and I had a superb meal at Hal's. We discussed ordering something different, but almost always stay with the filet. It was cooked to perfection, served hot, tender, juicy and with wonderful flavor."

  • "While I have been a big fan of Bone's, Hal's is certainly an equal alternative. The food, service and experience was great. My father-in-law is a cattle rancher and I look forward to taking him to this native gem!"

  • "If you live in the area, you know that depending on who you ask they have a favorite steakhouse in town but it is typically 1 of 5 local to Atlanta. Prior to eating at Hal's I was devout follower of another steakhouse in town. My first time at Hal's I ordered the bone in filet and now I have completely changed my tune. It was definitely the best steak I've had in Atlanta. Also note, the restaurant is very lively and energetic. Just know you will not be dining in the "traditional-stuffy steakhouse" setting. This was fine with me, but I can see others not so appreciative of the atmosphere."

  • "Come here for the filet mignon, and stay for a cocktail. Hal's does not boast foodie culture, it boasts a damn good cut of meat, cooked to perfection. 3 course dinner suggestion: App: Get the escarot (just wonderful) or the grilled oysters (they're famous for 'em; all of their oysters are BluePoint) Dinner: Filet Mignon - medium rare, and choose the mashed potatoes or the creamed spinach Additional side: white truffle mac and cheese Dessert: chocolate cake or creme brulee Servers can make great recommendations - super knowledgeable Notes: Sit on the main floor for people-watching of the cigar-puffing Buckhead business elite and a mixed bag of older socialites; Or go upstairs and get a patio table for nice ambiance with a date or family."

  • "Food, wine list and service were exceptional maybe the best in Atlanta. Had dined at Morton's the night before as for food and selection Hal's would be my choice. Only negative, was with a group of 5 and the noise level was so loud you could barely have conversation with the person seated next to you. My first visit so not sure if it is always that noisy but will certainly give it another try."

  • "Great find in Atlanta, obviously very popular with locals as seems to be always packed, service is a atentative but not overbearing, food is fantastic with local southern focuses, if you like steaks and seafood this is the place, good bar scene and wine list also."
