After years of going for dinner, we decided to go for brunch on a Sunday- it's very nice, quiet, menu is excellent and never feel rushed like dinner time. I took my best friend and his wife there to celebrate a birthday. They make thier own small rolls and pastries. Menu has several great dishes combined with champagne- we will be back !!!!

Hal's has always been a go-to rock-solid fun when in town, serving very good food in a fun, vibrant setting. Esp. when live music is playing. Big plus is that they have always been able to accommodate large parties (and still did.) Perhaps we just caught it on an off night. The service was slow, although it was early and far from full, and a couple of the dishes arrived not-as-ordered. Still some tasty treats to be had, but this past trip wasn't up to my usual expectations for such a long standing restaurant. I hope its not slipping; will give it another go, but on the probation list.

We love going to Hal's because we know it is always good food at a great value. Their turkey burgers are the best in town! The menu changes seasonall. We are locals and have been eating there for years. The bar is a great way to hang with locals as well as tourists.

Hal's is not going to set the culinary world on fire, which is absolutely fine. Food is solid - we went with friends that aren't real adventurous eaters, so things like roast chicken with fries was perfect. And that's a dish Hal's does really well. Went another night soon after, sat in the bar to watch a game and wait for friends to join me down the street at The Tasting Kitchen. It was great, a glass of wine, a dish of hamachi crudo, and a World Series game on the TV. Couldn't have found a better spot for that.

Fun, hopping local spot that pre-dated all of the other buzzy restaurants on Abbot Kinney, Hal's is the "real" Venice. You'll see a mix of locals (artists, jazz fans, families, bar-flies) enjoying themselves here. Great service with a sweet, friendly team of hostesses, busboys and waiters. The food was the weak link of a recent visit which is a shame because the menu is appealing and diverse, with choices at various price points and accommodating multiple food issues (vegetarian, etc).

This was our second trip to Venice in the past 2 years. We have eaten at many of the area restaurants including those that promote small plates. Having gone the small plate route the previous 2 nights, we were ready for ordering less but getting more. Internet and area residents endorsed Hal's as a favorite of the locals. Now, I'm not one that gravitates towards alternatives when it comes to burgers, but I had read great reviews about the turkey burger and the Caesar salad. So, I decided to order both - and Hal's pairs them. I was not disappointed. Both were great. Couldn't convince my wife to order the same. She got the hamburger and loved it! I had a couple of bites and it, too, was exceptional. We will return on our next visit.

The food was not as good as I remember from visits past, albeit at least one year earlier. The service was truly unimpressive. The turkey burger and mixed seafood grill were both dry. The fried calamari was average. The ambiance is always nice, not romantic but pleasantly busy with an open layout. Apparently we sat in the booth where Jennifer Lawrence had recently sat...big deal.

I first went to Hal's about 20 years ago (when Abbott Kinney was somewhat abandoned after dark) and had what I thought was the best Caesar salad- I'm happy to say it still is delicious and amongst the best I've had since. So, I love Hal's- the timeless dining room, excellent service, delicious/fresh/seasonal menu, art, and relaxed atmosphere make it one of my all time favorites. Seated upon arrival, but after a few minutes had to go back to tell hostess we had no waiter (while others arriving after us had). Waiter showed and apologized without explanation and remained attentive but not friendly. White sea bass had fishy smell when served, but tasted ok, to the extent I could tell--the seasoning was overpowering. Turkey burger was very good. Excellent wine. Fun place with proximity to bar scene which was more crowded than restaurant. Reasonably priced.

Hal's has a fun, interesting, atmosphere. However, took too long to get our food. We figured the waiter forgot to put in the order, which is understandable. However, he did not acknowledge the wait, apologize, or try to be nice in any way to make up for letting us wait over an hour to get our entrée! A little acknowledgement would have gone a long way.

I had such good memories of Hals, from when I used to live in Santa Monica. I remember their burger and fries as some of the best in L.A. Not any more unfortunately. Medium rare was dry and the fries had clearly been sitting around and had lost that nice crispy texture and taste that freshly fried fries have. And at a time of year when tomatoes are in season theirs was bland. So much for memories. I wouldn't go back

Hal's never fails to please. Besides the seasonal menu items, there is always the World's Best Burger (beef and turkey), the city's best Caesar salad, a varied menu to make any sort of diner happy (vegetarian, fish, chicken, beef, pasta). Personally, I love the steak with onion rings. The wait staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Jazz nights are fun; the bar is lively (TV included), the drinks are poured to satisfy anyone trying to tie one on! While Hal's is a mainstay of Venice's famed Abbot Kinney, you won't find any attitude here. A happy, friendly environment, not to be missed.

Hal's was delicious, excellent service and I have Open Table to thank for the find. I knew I would be on Abbot Kinney in Venice about dinner time, so I turned to Open Table for suggestions. The high diner approval, menu selections and location all directed me to Hal's. I can vouch for the baby artichoke appetizer, fresh grilled salmon with mashed potatoes, and the caesar salad (although I would prefer if it was cheesier). I would return in a snap.

Took a visiting friend from Australia to Abbott Kinney. Hal's is always reliable and not crazy expensive. We were both pleased with our meals and were very well taken care of by our waiter.
