Diner Reviews
  • "I was not expecting the food to be so amazing, but the entire meal was impressive. The menu isn't very extensive, but it's creative and imaginative. Absolutely wonderful. The service was a bit slow. I'm not sure if because staffing was short. But the servers were still very friendly and accomodating"

  • "On a Saturday afternoon, it's sure hard to do better than Hal's. Great food, great atmosphere, the incredible feel of Venice pulsing right outside the window... the Turkey burger is amazing, so is the Tuna Melt... you cannot go wrong with this Abbot Kinney gem."

  • "We asked for a 7:15 reservation thinking it would allow for a more leisurely dinner. We were seated promptly. An appetizer for the table arrived quickly, but then, to our amazement and frustration, all of the dishes we ordered arrived within 5 minutes and while we were still enjoying the appetizer. Our table was jammed with dishes and sending it back only meant getting reheated food a few minutes later. The waiter apologized. We opted to have our meals wrapped up and eat at home. The food we ordered was quite good. They experience was not."

  • "Great neighborhood restaurant and bar which has been around for a long time. Whenever I visited over the years the food and service did not disappoint. Everything was great this time too."

  • "I always have Hals in my back pocket when I need a guaranteed good meal and dirty martini. The only slightly less than perfect part was our server was soso"

  • "Found this place while checking through Open Table options on a Sunday morning. Had the Savory Scramble and husband went for the Lobster & Chorizo Scramble. Both were amazing and our plates were wiped clean. Hal's fries somehow way better than home fries but both delicious. Mimosas also great and didn't skimp on the champs. By far the best biscuits and mini-muffins I've ever eaten--served complimentary with breakfast entrees. Service excellent & but not suffocating. Will most certainly go back. Crowd was a refreshing group not trying so hard as rest of Abbott Kinney bunch."

  • "Hal's is located in a great stretch of Abbot Kinney that allows you to incorporate shopping and dining. The bar area was small but lively, and the signature drinks were worth the extra cost. The food was light yet flavorful. Salads came out heaping on the plate, and I highly recommend the onion rings!"

  • "The food was good as was the service. Not great for kids, but OK."

  • "Hals is one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in LA. The food is always awesome, the wine list and cocktails are perfect and the service is always attentive and helpful. The caesar salad is my favorite caesar in the entire city, although for some it is too strong. For me, its amazing."

  • "We very much enjoyed our dinner. Manuel's salad was fantastic as was the albacore crude plate, the seafood sashimi, pork chop and grilled seafood plate. Our waiter was fantastic and never hesitated to replace a cocktail that wasn't to our liking and replaced it with a fantastic cucumber martini. Even though we went right as the jazz group started to play, we were still able to carry on a nice conversation, and they were very good. We would definitely return."

  • "Hal's was the first restaurant we were introduced to when we moved here six years ago. Loved it then, love it still! Terrific art, cool people, live music two nights a week, and such good food! Particularly the tuna crudo, turkey burger and hamburger - and anything with roasted vegetables. And a great martini!"

  • "Food is classic, yet inventive without going over the top. The waiter was a little slow but very friendly and accommodating. Ambiance is great- good energy but not too loud. Definitely will go back there."

  • "The lively and varied crowd at Hal's was the perfect place to bring my out-of-town guests for a quintessential L.A. experience last weekend. The food was excellent, as usual, and my guests were impressed, especially with the pork chop entree and apple pie dessert. We ordered a bottle of wine (the Malbec) and thought it was great with our meal and was completely smooth. The wine list seems to complement well the quality of food served. Our waiter and wait staff were just-right attentive and very friendly, seemingly happy to be there serving us. Hal's is an all-around great place for excellent food and drink and has stayed on our favorites list over the years."

  • "We were musing about how long we had been coming to Hal's. We guessed 15 years. Still love it, still a "go to" place especially when we want to show out-of-towners one of our fave Venice places. We found out it has actually been 26 years! Now that is a testament to a restaurant. The menu is still full of choices that are hard to make, the art continues to be fabulous and the staff always makes you feel welcome. Ask for a booth, settle in and enjoy your visit. Congrats to Hal's!"

  • "Hal's never fails. The menu changes with the seasons - and gets better all the time; the wait staff is superb, and you can't find a more hip-place-without-attitude in Venice. Food is varied (something for everyone, including vegans and vegetarians) and never misses a beat. Wine list is perfectly matched and priced to the menu; and cocktails are a plus. Crowd is varied, too: young singles, young couples, old couples, hipsters, artists, boomers. There is a private dining room upstairs, away from the madding crowd, which is perfect for a business dinner, rehearsal party dinner, etc. It doesn't get any better than this."

  • "My wife and I wanted a low key, nice dinner for Valentine's Day, and this restaurant really was perfect. At first, we had a table upstairs, but it's too loud if there's a large group near you. So we got a small table downstairs, and it was perfect. The place has nice, unpretentious ambiance, and the hostesses were really nice. Our waiter was also totally professional but friendly. The food was great, from the red prawn appetizer to the fantastic duck to the chocolate tort. My wife loved her beef roulade and the poached clementine oranges with ice cream. I wouldn't say it's very romantic, but has a nice intimacy that really puts you at ease. Thank you, Hal!"

  • "My husband and I have been coming here for decades, when it was first a local Venice restaurant that served great food before all the trendy places sprouted. Always a good bar pour, and wait staff always friendly and efficient. Hal has kept his classic burger and roast chicken, but surrounds it with delicious seafood, pasta and meat dishes, creatively prepared and that actually taste good....not just food combinations for a quirky splash. The reason it's been around so long is that you get good food, drinks, a fun atmosphere where people look like they're enjoying themselves, and Hal usually hovering on the sidelines making sure his guests are happy. We will continue to come here as Hal's rises above the trends."

  • "Hal's is always a great place both to eat and to people watch and to enjoy art and, on the right days, jazz. Clearly the "in" place for the heavily arts populated neighborhood."

  • "As always Hal's is my favorite place to eat in the Venice area. Nice selection on the menu, good drinks and wine. Everyone who come to visit me must go to Hal's..."

  • "Went to Hal's for a catch-up brunch with an old friend and colleague. I knew it would deliver, as always. Really good food, excellent value, contemporary atmosphere without being "oh so hip". Hal's doesn't have to try that hard - when you've got it, you've got it. I've been coming for years and years, and it's truly a neighborhood and area gem. While the food is not outstanding in the sense that I'd make a detour to eat there just for the food, the overall experience is great. Sometimes they have live music, which is really like gilding the lily. As a native New Yorker, I have long found Hal's to be the closest thing to a quality NY dining experience as there is in LA, especially for brunch. Go!"

  • "I had the dorade. Food was good, but there were too many competing flavors on one plate. My partner described the sauces as "muddy." However the service was friendly and the place had an energetic vibe. I'd try it again for lunch."

  • "Another excellent evening at Hal's. Met friends for an late Friday night meal. We were seated at a large booth which gave a great view of the dining room next to a large table of animated people. Always a great crowd that provides for people watching. We had the calamari and artichokes along with the sausage pizza, yumm. St. Martini was just right. Service was fantastic and we even got to see Hal enjoying a drink later in the eve."

  • "The ambience, food, music and service was awesome. I went with a couple friends and we were very pleased with Hal's Bar and Grill. The prices for food, drinks, and valet weren't outrageous either. I'm definitely returning soon. I had a magnificent time. The food, drinks, and dessert were beyond delicious!"

  • "We had an overnight layover at LAX on our way to Mexico and I wanted something that was not too far from the airport. This place is in Venice, about a 20 minute cab ride. I had never tried it, but it was a great choice. The food was excellent and so were the cocktails. The owner has had the place for years and comes in all the time. He was there and we got to meet him and told him we would be back the next time we are in town. There is very wonderful art on the walls and the whole place has a feel of being welcomed into someone's home. I had the duck breast, which was good, but my companion's pork chop was even better."

  • "Food was amazing! HOWEVER, after making a special note on open table reservation (for 4) then reconfirming with the restaurant for my husband's Birthday Celebration.... they forgot!!! However, after speaking to the hostess, our disappointment was relayed to our server but the surprise was completely deflated ending in a disappointing birthday bummer. This was not Open tables fault... was the restaurants."

  • "Closest thing to a classic New York Bar. Before Abbott Kinney was anything but a blight, Hal put his restaurant down and has kept it great ever since. Just wish they had jazz more often than Monday."
