  • "Hal's has a fun, interesting, atmosphere. However, took too long to get our food. We figured the waiter forgot to put in the order, which is understandable. However, he did not acknowledge the wait, apologize, or try to be nice in any way to make up for letting us wait over an hour to get our entrée! A little acknowledgement would have gone a long way."

  • "I had such good memories of Hals, from when I used to live in Santa Monica. I remember their burger and fries as some of the best in L.A. Not any more unfortunately. Medium rare was dry and the fries had clearly been sitting around and had lost that nice crispy texture and taste that freshly fried fries have. And at a time of year when tomatoes are in season theirs was bland. So much for memories. I wouldn't go back"

  • "Service was very slow, however. We were there 20 minutes before getting our drinks, 45 minutes before getting our appetizer, and even dessert took about 12 minutes for one bread pudding."

  • "Great food. Yummy burger and chicken. Service top notch. Go go go."

  • "Hal's never fails to please. Besides the seasonal menu items, there is always the World's Best Burger (beef and turkey), the city's best Caesar salad, a varied menu to make any sort of diner happy (vegetarian, fish, chicken, beef, pasta). Personally, I love the steak with onion rings. The wait staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Jazz nights are fun; the bar is lively (TV included), the drinks are poured to satisfy anyone trying to tie one on! While Hal's is a mainstay of Venice's famed Abbot Kinney, you won't find any attitude here. A happy, friendly environment, not to be missed."

  • "Second time at Hal's -- even better than first visit. Service is friendly and attentive. Food is very good. Great art!"

  • "Hal's was delicious, excellent service and I have Open Table to thank for the find. I knew I would be on Abbot Kinney in Venice about dinner time, so I turned to Open Table for suggestions. The high diner approval, menu selections and location all directed me to Hal's. I can vouch for the baby artichoke appetizer, fresh grilled salmon with mashed potatoes, and the caesar salad (although I would prefer if it was cheesier). I would return in a snap."

  • "Took a visiting friend from Australia to Abbott Kinney. Hal's is always reliable and not crazy expensive. We were both pleased with our meals and were very well taken care of by our waiter. He was busy with a large group party, but still managed to keep his level of service up for us. That's why I'm giving him 5 stars!"

  • "I eat there monthly with a group of women. Hal's has been adding interesting things to it's lunch menu of late. they are always friendly and the service is impeccable."

  • "I've been visiting Hal's since the 90s and have never had a bad experience. The food is fantastic. I usually go on Sunday or Monday for the jazz and have always enjoyed it. I also like the look of the restaurant. It's upscale without being pretentious. It's welcoming. Highly recommended."

  • "Our favorite restaurant in Los Angeles! Always great food, excellent service, terrific wines by the glass and an unbeatable price-to-quality ratio. Fun crowd--everything from newborn babies with their parents out for a late dinner to trendoids and neighborhood regulars (if your neighborhood is Venice!), friendly and caring staff. And those Hal's fries..."

  • "There have been many new restaurants on Abott Kinney in recent years, but Hal's is still the classic - reliable menu, good service, nice ambiance. The best part, they have no attitude and are willing to accommodate any special requests. Hal's is the classic Venice Beach Bistro and should be the standard that the other new restaurants on Abott Kinney should look up to."

  • "An old Venice restaurant...been around for a long tiome, still good. Took a high school friend here. It was great!"

  • "great food...comfortable atmosphere...local favorite...never disappoints. That's why we've been coming to Hal's for decades. Most L.A. restaurants don't last half as long. That's a big hint. No frills, just all the right components. Our waiter let our 21 year old daughter know he's seen her grow up from when she could barely reach the table. Eating beautifully prepared duck, or just enjoying once of the best burgers around, with the buzz of a good bar scene, and a little jazz in the background...doesn't get any better."

  • "We expected the lunch menu, which looked pretty good on their site. Unfortunately, on Sundays lunch is not served until 3:00 PM. We were stuck, and had to do with the mediocre brunch. I wish their website mentioned the brunch."

  • "Our party of 8 was compressed into a corner, which would have been great had the food and service been better. We constantly were asking for our waiter..... And we had at least a 30 minute period when everyone had finished their meal and no desert was offered until we chased our waiter down. Very disappointing."

  • "Have gone for many years and will continue.,this is a local upscale find for foodies who get what they pay for. Always celebrate special occasions there. "

  • "This is a great spot to meet some friends or bring a date. The menu is always consistent and has great options for those with dietary restrictions. Staff is always friendly and accommodating."

  • "The service at Hal's is always top notch, friendly, and knowledgeable. The food is on spot... plenty of choices for everyone, all well-prepared and delicious. Price point is on target and the bartenders know how to pour. This is a hot spot in trendy Venice, but you won't get attitude here. The wait staff is seasoned and loyal Hal's employees. The upstairs private dining room, now housing an art exhibit, is the perfect place to have an intimate party. Our favorite dishes: The always-fabulous Hal's burger (or half Jidori chicken) with the best fries in town; the perfect Caesar salad; the porterhouse steak with onion rings - to die for! Don't miss the duck salad at lunch; or the wonderful weekend brunches. "

  • "Hal's is still going strong! Exceptional Menu (anything you're in the mood for), Terrific, Attentive Service, Outstandting Food. The porterhouse steak, the grilled chicken, the sashimi plate-All above expectations. Definitely will be going back to Hal's more frequently! (i had lunch AND dinner on the same day!)"

  • "We celebrated my sons 22nd birthday, and we had fun. My request for sitting was granted and they even have a birthday dessert for the birthday celebrant. Food was awesome. Cod was cooked to perfection, steak was cooked the way our guest wanted it to be. Will definitely go back to Hal's!"

  • "Brunch at Hal's was yummy! My friend created her own omelet, and I had the smoked salmon scramble (which I recommend). The complimentary bread and muffins were also yummy, especially the cornbread muffins. Our server appeared a little distracted and tired, but all in all, we had a pleasant experience and will be back."

  • "We have been to Hal's many times for a late lunch. The seafood is always delicious, my husband loves Keith's seafood salad. The drink specials are a great deal and very good. Happy hour is really hopping!"

  • "Hal's is always fun, the food is always tasty, and the restaurant buzzes on the weekend with an energetic Vibe. We usually find it a fun place to go with 1 or 2 other couples. The steaks aren't 2" thick like some specialty steak houses, but the are tasty and propery done. The house dessert is terrific."

  • "As rents climb and storefronts change in this ever popular strip of Venice, one thing remains the same: the dependability of Hal's Bar and Grill. Simple but amazing menu, fabulous bar, attentive and professional staff, great atmosphere. In this neighborhood of constant, trendy change, being at Hal's is a reliable and wonderful oasis. "

  • "The great art changes periodically, but the wonderful loft space and good food keeps this place ticking over. The lunch menu had a great selection, and our choices were delicious. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and prompt. The wine selection was varied and had choices at all price points. Watching the eclectic group that gravitatestot the bar was great people watching. A wonderful place to dine after a stroll along Abbot Kinney."

  • "I was not expecting the food to be so amazing, but the entire meal was impressive. The menu isn't very extensive, but it's creative and imaginative. Absolutely wonderful. The service was a bit slow. I'm not sure if because staffing was short. But the servers were still very friendly and accomodating"

  • "On a Saturday afternoon, it's sure hard to do better than Hal's. Great food, great atmosphere, the incredible feel of Venice pulsing right outside the window... the Turkey burger is amazing, so is the Tuna Melt... you cannot go wrong with this Abbot Kinney gem."

  • "We asked for a 7:15 reservation thinking it would allow for a more leisurely dinner. We were seated promptly. An appetizer for the table arrived quickly, but then, to our amazement and frustration, all of the dishes we ordered arrived within 5 minutes and while we were still enjoying the appetizer. Our table was jammed with dishes and sending it back only meant getting reheated food a few minutes later. The waiter apologized. We opted to have our meals wrapped up and eat at home. The food we ordered was quite good. They experience was not."

  • "Hal's is located in a great stretch of Abbot Kinney that allows you to incorporate shopping and dining. The bar area was small but lively, and the signature drinks were worth the extra cost. The food was light yet flavorful. Salads came out heaping on the plate, and I highly recommend the onion rings!"

  • "Found this place while checking through Open Table options on a Sunday morning. Had the Savory Scramble and husband went for the Lobster & Chorizo Scramble. Both were amazing and our plates were wiped clean. Hal's fries somehow way better than home fries but both delicious. Mimosas also great and didn't skimp on the champs. By far the best biscuits and mini-muffins I've ever eaten--served complimentary with breakfast entrees. Service excellent & but not suffocating. Will most certainly go back. Crowd was a refreshing group not trying so hard as rest of Abbott Kinney bunch."
