Diner Reviews
  • "We have been enjoying Haliimaile every trip to Maui. However this visit was was rather different. I will start by saying the food is as good as always and our server was friendly. It was the management staff that I took isssue with. We arrived at our reservation time in fact a couple of minutes early and checked in with the host who seated us. Approx. 15 minutes later my wife received a text from Open Table that the restaurant had cancelled our reservation. When we brought it the attention one of the staff he contacted the manager who advised "nothing could be done as the computers were shut down". No visit from the manager. Rather than argue the point we finished our meal and followed up with Open Table after we returned home. "

  • "Hali'imaile General Store has been and continues to be a favorite since discovering it 15 years ago. Either arrive early for lunch or reserve a table. Always reserve for dinner. Off the beaten path in hilly area and worth the drive!! This trip we visited twice, once for dinner and once for lunch on our last day which works well for the later flights to the mainland. I always recommend the General Store to my friends visiting Maui. Save room for dessert!!!!"

  • "Great food - excellent menu for adults & children- something for everyone in your party whether you want a light meal or a heavier with sides, appetizers and desserts. Fresh ingredients nicely prepared."

  • "Very consistent output from the kitchen. Very consistently good, that is! Great variety on the menu. Casual feel. I would definitely recommend the General Store and would go there again when in Maui."

  • "We always visit when in Maui. Hopefully this was a bad night for the chef. Ordered the rack of lamb (house special), waitress recommended cooked medium, but arrived well done. Waitress told manager - they wanted me to be happy and offered to refire in 8 mins, however I hate to see food go to waste. Unfortunately, it was so chewy and black bean sauce too sweet, I couldn't eat it. It was taken off our bill. My wife ordered the seafood coconut curry, the sauce was thick and flavor weak- the waitress described it as spicy. The haricot salad was on point and pineapple upside down cake (that is my go to desert in Maui) was soggy and the pineapple chewy due to incomplete removal of the core, but tasted good! Hopefully better on next visit."

  • "After getting multiple recommendations off foodie friends and food forums, we were incredible disappointed with almost all restaurants in Maui until we went to the General Store. It was incredible, so much so that we went back again two days later for our last meal on the island. The food service was surprisingly quick with fresh ingredients and complex flavors. They Even offered their BBQ Ribs for the kids for only $12 which was enough to feed an adult. We had the macadamia nut encrusted cath of the day, sashimi Napoleon, crab cakes, carpaccio salad (a miss) and ribs. Delightful. Day 2's crab pizza not so good."

  • "We eat here every time we come to Maui. We like it even better than Mamas Fish House and it is pretty great too! Not as expensive as Mamas Fish house either."

  • "Haliimaile General Store transported me and my dining partner to a wonderful gustatory world. The scallop appetizer was delightful in its mushroom sauce, plenty of food for two. We each ordered the fish special of the day, extraordinary served on purple potatoes....oh so tasty of a combo! The presentations were magnificent, showing off color and texture handsomely. We liked the big flower painting, appreciated more at a distance. The fish floating above the bar added a nice touch of whimsy, and the blown glass composition was fanciful. Though the acoustics were such that the crowded dining room was noisy, service was extraordinary, the waiters helpful and solicitous. Two thumbs up today! I would definitely rate this place a winner!"

  • "We stumbled across this restaurant the last time we were in Maui and my new hubby had never been there so we decided to go back. I really wanted him to be able to try this resturant and he was not disappointed. The food is fresh, beautiful and unique. This time I got an autographed cookbook. I would highly reccommend this restaurant."

  • "We try to go here every year before we leave the island. What a great way to end the week. A great meal, and our server was mindful that we had a plane to catch. Very nice, reasonably priced wine list as well."

  • "My wife had the tomato, watermelon and cucumber salad that was excellent and I had the Goat cheese tart that was very good.. For the main course, she had Walu that was excellent. I had the Opakpaka in a horseradish crust that was outstanding with mash potatoes. We also had the bread pudding for dessert that we thought was a bit heavy ending to our meal."

  • "We have been coming to Maui for many years and have never made it to your restaurant. So glad we did this year. We had a group of 13 with 6 children and the server and restaurant was fantastic. A beautiful place with great food !! We will be back."

  • "Accommodating..found a spot for us when we were about 45 min. early. 9 of us so many different items were selected for lunch. Our guests were still talking about their selection a day later."

  • "The staff has no desire to excite customers about the menu. Perhaps a dinner reservation is different. The hostess had a dirty shirt on, the waiter hung over with blood shot eyes, the bartender , well."

  • "Got lost trying to find it, almost didn't make the reservation time (so use your GPS to get there!). Ordered the lemongrass ginger cocktail to start, and it was divine! The warm goat cheese tart appetizer was delicious, but super messy. This isn't a bad thing IMO, but don't order it expecting to look elegant while eating it (I ordered it for the goat cheese, was not disappointed). I had the scallops entree, my husband ordered the flank steak. Both were cooked to perfection, portions were not overwhelming, and the flavors were amazing! If you're looking for an intimate experience, request a table in the back dining room when you make your reservation. If you like lively conversation and bright lights, sitting up front is the way to go."

  • "I've been coming to Maui for over 25 years and each time must always visit this restaurant. It delivers on all points: delicious food, variety of choice, ambience, service and consistency. It is a bit of a distance from most tourist areas but ignore that and make sure to visit. You will be delighted!"

  • "We have been to this restaurant before and the food was just as good as I remembered it to be. Both my husband and I had the mahi and it was excellent. We also had a salad and the salad was so fresh and the dressing was excellent. I would highly recommend anyone to try this restraurant. It has been a staple of Maui for many years and the owner, bev Gannon, is renown for her culinary skills."

  • "Took my girlfriend, Dai, here on our first official date. Wanted to get away from the typical hotel-type, national chain-type, tourist-type of place. We really enjoyed our dinner, starting with the Goat Cheese Panna Cotta salad. I had the Horseradish Crusted Opakapaka and Dai had the swordfish special for that night. Although there were a log of other diners, we were able to talk, enjoy each other's company, and have a very romantic dinner. The Hali’imaile Pineapple Upside-Down Cake was the end to a perfect first date."

  • "This restaurant was recommended by a friend in Canada. I enjoyed the food immensely. Really liked the booking reservation on line. the drive from Kihei was great. Just found the open concept quite noisy and hard to visit. Great dining experience"

  • "We had reservations for 8. Service seemed really slow. The meal took nearly 2 1/2 hours. Now to the restaurant's credit when the main courses arrived, they all seemed freshly prepared and not as though they were sitting under lights. Great food. I had the shutome (sp) and it was wonderful. Spent about $600-not bad for 8 adults with wine and drinks."

  • "Great menu for kids as well. We had a wonderful Kistler chardonnay - attractively priced. Lovely fresh fish - prepared delicately. Service was sufficient but not what one expects at a Bev Gannon restaurant. The wine was slow to be served and we helped ourselves to filling our glasses"

  • "An old building which maintains its old Hawai'i charm yet provides the most incredible food should be on everyone's list of Island "musts". We first visited here in 2001, after seeing Chef Gannon on The Food Network with Sara Moulton. We loved it so much that each time we return to Maui, a dinner there is one of the first things we plan. Each food item has been incredibly delicious; this time it was the Paniola ribs. Fall off the bone with a fantastic sauce. Terrific wine list, perfect service, Old Hawai'i charm - what more could you want?"

  • "While other restaurants come and go, Chef-owner Bev Gannon has made Haliimaile General Store a success year after year. We wouldn't come to Maui without a visit or two to this wonderful restaurant. The food is consistently good, as is the service. It would be hard to pick one favouite dish from the menu, but Bev's Famous Crab Pizza is a good candidate."

  • "We tried this restaurant on the recommendation of friends. We'd never been to the Makawao area, so it was a fun experience. What a unique and beautiful area. The restaurant was cute- loved the decor and ambience. The food was all very good. Fresh and tasty. I loved the lime- coconut daiquiri! So refreshing and flavorful. I've read many reviews that compare this to Mama 's. We definitely enjoyed our experience here, but nothing can quite compare to the experience and quality at Mama's. Every detail there is perfect. I'm definitely glad we tried the General Store, but for the money Mama's is still number one in our opinion."

  • "We have been to this restaurant over five times and always enjoyed our food and experience. However, on Saturday, we waited 40 minutes for the waiter to take our order, received the wrong appetizer and the fresh Mahimahi -catch of the day was dry and overcooked. Other items order were fine. Opakapaka, ribs, scallops, duck appetizer, beef carpaccio, and crab pizza were all delicious."

  • "Took my wife there for her birthday. First time there. Given a table up front, in a corner, looking at the kitchen and the waiters galley and it was very noisy. Probably shouldn't even be a table at that location. Bartender was very slow. We got our appetizers before we got our drinks. Wife had the seared ahI tuna and I had the macadamia crusted mahi mahi. The food was excellent Service was ok, but for the prices they charge, it should have been a lot better."

  • "The seafood curry, crab "pizza", and a roast-duck special were all superb. When we arrived, we were initially seated in the front dining room. It was full, and the background noise was very high. As she was passing our table, the hostess heard me remark that I was going to move to be next to my dining partner, so that I could hear him. A minute or two later, she returned and moved us to an almost unoccupied back dining room. From that point, everything was perfect."

  • "Straight to the point: the food is delicious! Everything we ordered was wonderful. The dishes are plated beautifully and generously. Treat yourself to pineapple upside-down cake for dessert. Their holiday buffets are classy & tasty. We come to Haliimaile for special occassions & are never disappointed."

  • "This is actually our 2nd visit in less than a week. We enjoyed it so much we went back. All the food we tried was delicious but our favorite was the Opakapaka. The owner has 2 other restaurants on Maui and we will try those during our next visit."

  • "We spent our last evening in Maui at Haiimaile General Store before our 10:10 pm flight back to the mainland. It is outside the city area, but easy to find and with a charming setting. What a meal ... "popcorn shrimp" ... what a delight. It was a fabulous treat to relax ad spend this time with great food, lovely wait staff."
