Diner Reviews
  • "This started years back when visiting Maui, we always go to Haliimaile. Enjoy the food, the classic unique home atmosphere, and friendly service. It can be as romantic as you like or just fun and lively with a group of family and friends; everything just fits. Always look forward to something new to try."

  • "great for the neighborhood , tucked away in the middle of the cane fields, and then BAM a great restaurant... go figure."

  • "We've been coming here since it's opened and it's never failed is. Excellent fresh food with a unique island taste."

  • "Too noisy - I couldn't even hear my dinner partner speaking to me. The food was certainly good, but we didn't feel the value measured up to the pricing. In the middle of nowhere. Unpaved parking. No air conditioning. No outdoor seating. No view. Why bother?"

  • "This is our second visit to HGS. Great menu and service. Our meals were delicious. Maui is always casual, but ee really enjoy the "upcountry" vibe. We notice that lots of tourists and foodies visit HSG, but also serves lots of locals adding to the ambiance."

  • "Really made a point of taking care of us. Food was special with local emphasis. Best restaurant in the region. Excellent friendly service at all points of contact. They were not going to be happy until they were sure we were fully pleased."

  • "Had reservations made for after we finished Hana Hwy and we were so glad we did! Food was amazing, family said the ribs were some of the best they ever had. Drinks were delish and service was great. Would return again!!"

  • "We've dined at Hali'imaile many times and our most recent visit was disappointing. The service was hurried and provided without a trace of warmth or welcome. Cocktails contained very little alcohol (also true at the sibling restaurant, Joe's Bar & Grill). Food was so-so. Popcorn shrimp were heavy with grease. The sashimi Napoleon was mostly lesser quality smoked salmon with only a tiny dab of fresh ahi tuna. Most disappointing was the pineapple upside-down cake which had been overheated in a microwave and topped with whipped cream from a can that immediately dissolved into a puddle. The microwaving destroyed the textures of the cake and topping. And the whole mess was tooth-achingly sweet. For these prices, we'll go elsewhere."

  • "My husband and I went to this Maui gem for a second time (it had been a few years.) I love the look of the plantation styled architecture. However, what moves us is the meal. And oh boy, what a meal it was! First off, I try to hold off on the bread/butter but had to take a bite (which lead to two or three, four tops.) Flavored butter, warm rolls = yes please. Next, we enjoyed a beet & goat cheese salad (sorry forgot the name) which was so deliciously unique and just the right serving size. Next, drum roll please...Opakapaka! Oh you lovely snapper, when you are prepared so perfectly you melt in my mouth and send me to foodie heaven! This perfection was served with tasty mashed potatoes & green beans that I swear were just picked! "

  • "My husband and I at here our last night in Maui and it was terrific. every thing from our appetizer to desert were all fantastic. We celebrated our wedding anniversary there and we both agreed it was a great choice. Would recommend it to anyone headed to Maui. It is a little off the beaten path but don't worry it's worth it!!"

  • "Of all the restaurants we tried, this may have been my favorite - or maybe second, but was so enjoyable I just had to bring a cookbook home. It's a little bit of a drive from some of the typical touristy spots (Wailea, Lahaina, etc.), but it's well worth the drive. The Sashimi Napoleon is a must have. The combinations of taste and texture with the tuna, salmon, and wonton crisps was simply out of this world. Our table gobbled up every bit of food that was placed in front of us. Just make sure that you save room for the coconut macaroons for dessert. Or ask to take some to go! You won't be disappointed."

  • "Had tuna pizza and duck for starter, then salty salt licked butterfish and "horseradish" crusted opakapaka both served with boxed mashed potatoes and bizarre sides. Both my wife and I were woken up from our sleep with horrible gas that night and a bad case of the runs. Had to cancel our bike tour, still not feeling great 2 days later. Not worth the drive and not really a farm to table restaurant, their beef is from Texas...wtf. don't waste your time, go to Fish Market for the best and cheapest Island eats in West Kaanapali."

  • "We've been to this restaurant 3 times and have enjoyed eating here every time! We had lunch there twice and dinner, once. The food is fresh, tasty, and affordable, especially for special occasions. I love the artwork - the decor (nothing fussy!) - the setup of the dining area. We had an excellent waiter who was very personable and friendly. The only issue I had with this place is the use of the crosswalk for those of us who parked across the restaurant - cars were speeding around the corner so one had to be very careful when exiting to the parking lot. Night time is especially dangerous. Hopefully, the town of Haliimaile can come up with a sign for drivers to slow down because of the patrons using the crosswalk from the restaurant. "

  • "This was our first trip to Maui and this restaurant was recommended to us by a friend. We chose the General Store for our 38th anniversary dinner to celebrate. We were not disappointed. Everything was fantastic - food, service and atmosphere."

  • "Don't get me wrong I have been a HUGE fan and supporter from its start but lately things have been less than stellar- took family from Colorado the other night food was marginal, scallops under cooked gummy with dry curry powder simply awful, dried out potatoes, over cooked veggies really slow service even though it was not crowded. I wished we had gone to Mama's."

  • "Dinner was special for our last night on Maui. I had the snapper and my husband had the duck. Both were wonderful. The restaurant can get a bit loud so don't expect an intimate setting "

  • "We live in Wailea part-time, and when we come on island, there are a select few places that we wouldn't ever miss. Haliimaile General Store is atop that list. Whether it's sitting at the bar and chatting with Tim (though he's out now due to a windsurfing accident....poor guy!) or sitting at a reserved table, the food tastes amazing! Brie and grape quesadilla with sweet pea guacamole, the popcorn shrimp. .....yummy appetizers!!! All their appetizers are to die for..... Entrees are beautifully presented....taste amazing....can't even pick one to highlight.....It's worth the trip from wherever you are on island to make this a 'must' on your to-do list!"

  • "As close to perfect as you could get! Seated quickly, server & wait staff were there just before you needed something. Both regular and vegetarian menu's offered fantastic, tasty meals. Sat in back room which is a lot quieter than front dining area. Although there were others in the room we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Our server, Katie, was fantastic! Great wine & wine suggestions were spot on. "

  • "I love going out to dinner but we generally go out to places like Haliimaile General Store for special occasions. It was my birthday and called for something out of the ordinary. We had incredible roasted chicken with Meyer lemon sauce, an amazing seafood curry dish and their island famous ribs. Service was warm, gracious and filled with aloha. I have been to Haliimaile many times but this was an especially rewarding food night. Drinks were great; apps (warm goat cheese tart!) were so delicious they could have served as meals themselves. Treat yourself and go to Chef Bev's gem of a restaurant. "

  • "First time for my mate, 3rd visit for me in celebration of his birthday his choice! At first glance it's a beautiful spot, charming & looks cozy loved that we were in the country! Ambience was nice, Noisey not cozy even sitting across each other we had to speak loudly. Staff was super friendly, I like to say that it's our first visit just to see how wait staff service is, he was great informative on wine choices & menu choices. Were foodies onolish was the starter tartar trio... and main menu was a bit over our taste palette too much going on and taste combinations . He orders his general "same" Mac crusted Mahimahi good but not the best he's had. I could'nt decide ended up Caesar salad and seafood pizza ended up sending back salad. "

  • "We have been enjoying Haliimaile every trip to Maui. However this visit was was rather different. I will start by saying the food is as good as always and our server was friendly. It was the management staff that I took isssue with. We arrived at our reservation time in fact a couple of minutes early and checked in with the host who seated us. Approx. 15 minutes later my wife received a text from Open Table that the restaurant had cancelled our reservation. When we brought it the attention one of the staff he contacted the manager who advised "nothing could be done as the computers were shut down". No visit from the manager. Rather than argue the point we finished our meal and followed up with Open Table after we returned home. "

  • "After getting multiple recommendations off foodie friends and food forums, we were incredible disappointed with almost all restaurants in Maui until we went to the General Store. It was incredible, so much so that we went back again two days later for our last meal on the island. The food service was surprisingly quick with fresh ingredients and complex flavors. They Even offered their BBQ Ribs for the kids for only $12 which was enough to feed an adult. We had the macadamia nut encrusted cath of the day, sashimi Napoleon, crab cakes, carpaccio salad (a miss) and ribs. Delightful. Day 2's crab pizza not so good."
