A word from Hakubai - The Kitano
Hakubai Japanese Restaurant, you don’t have to fly to Japan to enjoy the finest in Japanese cuisine. The unique Kaiseki cuisine of the Hakubai Japanese Restaurant has been described by the New York Times as “rarefied” and “excellent.”
Kaiseki is a distinctive and delicate cuisine with roots in Zen Buddhism and the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The multi-course dinner is served on an exquisite array of porcelain, pottery and lacquer dishware at carefully timed intervals.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "While you can order ala carte at Hakubai, I recommend trusting the chef to bring you one of their outstanding omakase courses. While the American style sushi and sashimi here is great, the dishes most Americans would have difficulty pronouncing much less remembering are the real experience. Each course, is a new experience of outstanding flavor and texture combinations."

  • "Traditional Japanese cuisine (kaiseki) at its best - simple but with an emphasis on quality of ingredients. Decent sake/shochu list. Service was excellent. A bit pricey but worth it as you see the care and attention that goes into every dish and presentation. If you don't know what kaiseki is then be open-minded and look it up first before going so you know a little of what to expect."

  • "The ambience could be a little more sophisticated. I mean it is similar to a inexpensive restaurant in a train station of Tokyo. But the price is much higher. Kaisekis start around 100 usd (less on lunch). It is not.so extensive as you would find in a nice restaurant of Japan. But the quality, appearance and perfection of each dish is remarkable. Small bottles of sake are around 30usd and are very well selected. Sound level? People in the tatami were screaming like crazy. But it is not the restaurant's fault."

  • "Whenever I visit and invited friend we enjoy your food and Hakubai has an atmosphere."

  • "Nice quiet atmosphere for business lunch. Competant but slow service even though place wasn't full. Tempura udon soup only fair -- shrimp was already soggy by time it arrived at table. Sushi roll doesn't compare to best Japanese restaurants (Sushi Seki, for example). This restaurant doesn't do full justice to the Kitano name."

  • "We had traveled to Japan 6 years ago and stayed in several ryokans and experienced a number of keiseki dinners there. We wanted to experience it one time more. I chose the $170 Omekase Keiseki dinner and was not disappointed. The quality of ingredients and, perhaps, the most beautiful presentation I have encountered, made this a very memorable dinner indeed. Our server was very attentive and explained all the details of each course which I have carefully recorded. This was a little trip to upscale Japan cuisine without the jet-lag."

  • "Overall, the best, most authentic Japanese restaurant in New York. Attracts a heavily Japanese crowd. Wide selection of classical Japanese favorites and excellent traditional sushi. Good choice of sakes. Service is pleasant and helpful but can seem a bit preoccupied at times. The space is in the basement and has no natural light. Though spacious, some might object to this aspect of the location. Otherwise, a very nice experience."

  • "Expensive hotel restaurant with food that's fine. But in NYC, expensive combined with OK food does not cut it. I happen to live in the neigborhood and had looked forward to eating here for a long time. Much better Japanese restaurants can be found in midtown. Seek them out. For the record we had sushi and shabu shabu."

  • "The service was very good. Very courteous. Food was nice. Small dishes was fun & pretty. When we went there at 1:15pm, their business lunch set was sold out. Went for lunch with my sister-in-law & she loves the place. Going back there for dinner again this Saturday. I wish there's more offer at Travelzoo website. Only comes out once in a long time. Wondering whether there are any other website that carries this restaurants offer. If they do, please let me know. We love this place."

  • "I got to the restaurant but was offered a really bad table and the enviroment wasn't pleasant. Therefore due to these two problems I didn't got to eat in the restaurant. I really hope next time I get a better service if there is another. However it's good to clarify that open table's service were very helpful and the bad experience had nothing to do with it."

  • "The spicy tuna rice bowl was a total disappointment. It was not spicy, was simply too salty (soy sauce salty). Too bad because all the rest was very nice."

  • "This location offers Japanese haute cuisine. Best experience I have had outside of Japan. True Japanese sensibility with inventive and creative dishes. Fantastic doufu. Beautiful presentation and delicate favors. Highly recommend for someone who wants a special Japanese food experience, not an American Japanese food experience."

  • "The restaurant was fairly empty on a Saturday night. They chose to spread the few diners among several rooms. So it was uncomfortably quiet. The sushi rolls were good. But the cooked options on the menu were odd and mostly very expensive, perhaps these were choices Japanese travelers might find comfortable, but it was not what a New Yorker is used to. Overall, an uncomfortable experience."

  • "I'm sure the food would've been good but the restaurant has no scene at all except for travelers staying at the hotel. We were bored listening to the conversation of the people next to us and decided to get up and go."

  • "We thought they provide nice Japanese services...but not real Japanese services...they wear Kimono only. My American friend is coming next week, however I wont take him to HAKUBAI, maybe take different Japanese restaurant. I heard many Japanese celebrities stay there, but I dont think restaurant is good as hotel."

  • "My husband and I flew in from Charlotte, NC area to just experience this dining "Kaiseki Ryori." And it was well worth the experience. Each delicacy was made in the way that only the artisan could arrange and each was prepared exquisitely and delicious. The service was also excellent."
