A word from Hakata Tonton
We invite you to try Hakata Tonton’s Authentic Kyushu Japanese Soul Food. We have a number of dishes which may same strange to the eye, but are delicious renditions of the food made famous in Hakata, Japan. Pork, Collagen, and Cod Roe are all specialties of the region and you can enjoy them in various combinations on our Japanese fusion style menu.
Our food is made to share and does not come in any particular order, as is the tradition in Hakata. We invite you to be adventurous and try a number of small plate items so that you get a feeling for our savory cuisine.
We have chosen a number of unique wines and Japanese sake we feel goes well with our savory cuisine and invite you to try a glass or a bottle. We have priced our wines by the bottle way below what most restaurants charge, so you can enjoy without hurting your wallet.
Finally, we invite you to try our collagen cuisine. It’s great for your skin and most importantly, we think you will love our presentation and taste.

  • "I feel we missed out since we didn't order a hot pot (all looked delicious). Instead we ordered several hot plates--gyoza were amazing, garlic fried rice was delicious, miso black cod was a little on the small side and not amazing, and the chicken wings were good. Friendly and inviting ambience, difficult to visit without a reservation. Tips not accepted, and the waitress told us when she dropped the check, which I appreciated. Glad we went!"

  • "you get a lot for your money, but ambience and noise level prohibit a better rating"

  • "We had a reservation which was confirmed yet didn't get a table and we're put at the bar. Walk-ins were given tables ..... Maybe because we were the only Caucasians in the restaurant? Air-conditioning was out, had at least three different servers. Food is amazing, yet treatment was poor at best."

  • "I used to love the food here. I havent been here in over 2 years and the food has really gone from YUM to mehhh. I was really looking forward to eating since I havent been here in over 2 years. But it was quite disappointing. Food lacked flavor it used to have. My favorite used to be the garlic fried rice, it was made horribly this time. They used rice that was very sticky and put nothing in the so called fried rice. It was basically sticky rice topped with scallions and garlic bits, it was bitter and utterly dissapointing! The place was very hot too, to many hot pots in the middle of summer with only one window and one AC unit that wasn't cool at all...they really need to work on venting out the small dining room."

  • "As soon as my girlfriend and I arrived Hakata Tonton,we were both ushered into the restaurant. There were presumably 3 waitresses, most of them seemed very friendly.Despite the fact that my girl friend and I had a language problem(English),the waitress tried to understand us as far as possible. The restaurant was very small but cosy. There was a table which for 4 people, we sat with two strangers. We both had been really satisfied before the strangers who sat next to us started prattling.Babble babble, the tattlers were really annoying.I think she was Chinese.Anyway, they were very enthusiastic, energetic and sometimes agitated.I definitely didn't want to spoil their mood,so I didn't complain. We enjoyed foods, but noise level there was quite high."

  • "My friends and I, 4 people had a reservation a month ago. If you want to dine at a good timing, suggest you make reservation as earlier as possible. They have renewed their menu a little bit, so there are more options which doesn't show up at Yelp menu. We had Grilled Pork Tonsoku with scallion and ponzu sauce, Pork Tongue, Egg Omlette, Pork belly with yuzu miso paste, Shabu Shabu Hot Po, Foie gras inari sushi, Caviar salad with noodle. Every dishes are so flavorful and we all love and enjoy it. We had Green Tea Tofu, Sesame ice cream, and strawberry ice cream. All taste good but my favorite is Green tea tofu. Service is friendly, thoughtful, and the best part is they don't ask for gratuity! It is really a big surprise for us!"

  • "We tried the classic collagen hot pot. Just so so. I expected more from other rave reviews. But the monkfish liver is very good. We also enjoyed the sake. Will be back for more dishes other than hot pot."

  • "It's deliciously amazing! The new Kampachi sashimi special is unbelievable. But then again, everything is basically amazing here, and one of the best versions you've ever tried of the thing that you order here. I didn't tonsoku in the past, but it's amazing here. Veal liver sashimi sound off putting? It is intense and wonderful! Service is always so nice. Try all the items."

  • "Hakata Tonton is my favorite restaurant because the service is impeccable (and service is included in the price, as is Japanese tradition) and the food could cost double the price and still be a steal. I've paid much more at very well known, high-rated places and not been as pleased as the experiences here. "

  • "It was our first Japanese hotpot experience and I must say I didn't expect service to be this good! We had to reserve 1 month in advance because this place is tiny and reservation is always full. I had heard great reviews about it before and I had been craving for some hotpot, so I brought my friend who is visiting from Europe here. We ordered the hotpot with motsu (intestine) and it was nothing like we had tried before. It was very fulfilling and refreshing. It can get a little greasy after a while, but the food is excellent. And the waiters are so attentive! They took our shopping bags and safely lock them in a locker. When we were ready to head out after a full meal, the waiter even offered us mint from a really cute container!"

  • "This was my first time at Hakata Tonton so we got the dinner tasting menu. It is an amazing value for $38. Everything was absolutely delicious and the service was great. We were stuffed. Only thing I would have done differently was gotten the noodles instead of the rice at the end of the hotpot as the soup got a little bit salty when used to cook the rice (though at that point we were pretty full so it didn't matter too much that we didn't finish). I would definitely go again as I saw people around me ordering other things that also looked very delicious!"

  • "We had been to this place 2 twice and love the food! Detox motsu pot with white miso is really GREAT!!! However this is definitely not a kid-friendly place. No diaper changing place in either 2 restrooms nor high chair. This is a very small and crowded place so we understand. However, we requested for napkins for over 5 times and we never got them. We also asked for hot tea couple times and finally we had our tea before we left."

  • "The food is aweseme, especially the hot pot. I went with my friends and even though our stomach was full at that time, once we smell it, we felt hungry again. The waitress are very patient and nice. The restaurant always full with people. If I have the chance, I will definitely go again. Highly recommeded it."

  • "I went to Hakata Tonton with my girlfriend this past weekend and had a wonderful time. The food was great. We both ordered from the tasting menu and received the following: kanpachi sashimi, shabu shabu pork salad, tonsoku, one piece of a daily special sushi each (calamari-esque in taste), fried chicken, and the hakata tonton hotpot with ramen noodles at the end. Each course was fantastic, the salad being my girlfriend's favorite and the sashimi as mine. The service was very good. Each course came out quite quickly and there were no problems whatsoever. The ambience was nice, although the restaurant is quite small. Overall, definitely a worthwhile dinner."

  • "Hands down the best shabu shabu I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. The wait staff served us with the utmost professionalism and consideration. It was also a lovely surprise when the waitress gave us Pez straight from the dispenser at the conclusion of our meal!"

  • "I enjoyed the hot pot, which was very healthy and delicious. It is suitable in a cold winder season. The price is very reasonable. I would like to come back again, while it is difficult to get the table."

  • "If you like spicy authentic, tummy warming cuisine this is the spot. Although you need to reserve at least a month in advance to get a table between the busy hours. All the food flavor is a bit too strong or a bit heavy so don't get too overwhelmed and order too much. You'll regret later."

  • "Wonderful staff, delicious food - I would live there if I could. But really, it's better than restaurants pretending to be fancy and charging three times the price. I wouldn't waste my money elsewhere. This is the place to eat anytime you get a chance!"

  • "Not only do I love the food, but also I love the way they treat their customers. They are very friendly and kind! I truly think that the executive chef, Koji Hagihara sets a great example for servers because he treats his customers in such friendly and kind manner. I would recommend to order egg omelet with mentaiko, sizzling tontoro and home made gyoza. I always want to order more, but I get full with their generous servings. I would love to go with a large group so I can order and try more food! I shall return very soon!"

  • "i love the food here but it was very disappointing that we were the only table that seemed to be affected by the health inspector's surprise visit during peak dinner time on a Tuesday night. The table next to us were seated after we were seated, they ordered after we ordered, yet they received all their food in a reasonable time but we waited 1 hour from the time we were seated with no indication of what was wrong and no food came and only when we asked what the delay was we got a vague answer. It would have been a nice courtesy to inform us of what was causing the delay much earlier. We did not eat until 10pm with an 8.30pm reservation. This is extremely disappointing. I will not come back anytime soon."

  • "This place is delicious! I wasn't too sure at first, because it's authentic Japanese food, and I'm used to Americanized Japanese food, but this was amazing. Everything we ate was great. We got a sushi roll and a hot pot for 2. Delish!"

  • "The only bad thing about this small restaurant is how hard it is to get an 8 pm reservation. And the occasional wait as the small kitchen labors to get out the food. Specializing in a particular and particularly delicious Japanese cuisine, it is also very reasonably priced."

  • "Pig's feet galore! This place is a must for adventurous eaters and those who want to sample a cuisine that they've most probably never had before."

  • "over price food, super small space, crowded seating, lack of airflow( we were sweating while eating!), long waits between food (I am not saying 5 or 10 mins, I am saying we have no food in between dishes for a good 20 mins or so), even a glass of water require a 15 mins wait! Do not recommend."
