Diner Reviews
  • "went here with our teenage son and out college freshman son and his two roommates- perfect choice- foods, lots of it and fast- and the fact that you cook your own at the table means there is no chance of awkward conversations- so win win- and the service is fast and friendly"

  • "Recommended to from a friend to check out happy hour and was not disappointed. Food tasted excellent along with cold beer and good sake would definitely come back for another happy hour. Be warned you may end up spending more than expected by getting carried away but worth it!"

  • "Good quality meats. Appetizers are great. Nice they bring all meats at once. Good sauces but think they use msg. Great for birthday's Noisy."

  • "It's fun and energetic. If you're looking for a romantic time, don't come here. This place is for loud, fun, happy groups. You cook while chatting and it's just loud. Fun and busy. So make reservations. They are always busy. Also, they won't seat you until your resetvatiok time so don't think that coming early will get you seated early. You just end up waiting. Service was great. Very attentive. And nice."

  • "Very noisy restaurant and we were there when it wasn't full. Big happy hour menu but beware-very small portions. Good service. We only had happy hour food so I cannot comment on the bbq menu."

  • "i love this place and have eaten at several around thecountry, never lets me down!"

  • "My husband and I love coming here. I wouldn't recommend it for large parties, since there's one grill for every four people. That can become a problem if the other half of your party orders a lot of un-cooked items. Neither less....the food was great, our waiter was awesome. Perfect date night!"

  • "Bummer! Made a reservation and still had to wait 15-20 minutes for our seats. My only true complaint is, the room was very hot & smokey. The tempeture was uncomfortably hot. Needs better ventilation."

  • "I love gyu Gaku. The food is always good. The only thing bad about this experience was that There was only one waitress that had to cover being hostess as well as wait on 5other tables"

  • "Good change of pace. Great experience. Fun atmosphere."

  • "The kitchen was really backed up, which was strange because it was not nearly the busiest I've seen this place. Our hostess and servers were lovely, but our meats took a very long time. Our veggies were overcooked or cold by the time our appetizers/meat showed up. I think that a few employees were probably no-shows due to the holiday. However, I'm willing to forgive one bad night for all the great dining experiences we've had here in the past. We'll certainly be back."

  • "The food was amazing. Very tender and well seasoned. Service could have been better though. Our waiter didn't explain much and kept disappearing."

  • "It's worth a visit during happy hour or during DineLA, otherwise the food is expensive and the portions are small."

  • "Went on a Wednesday and it was relatively busy. Tuesday and Wednesday nights they have a great $2-$3-$4 menu. This place is perfect for a fun date. My boyfriend loved it. Our waitress was great and brought us everything we asked for. Highly recommend the spicy roll, cabbage salad, yaki shabu, mushroom medley, and corn butter. Their miso soup and scallop was ok. The ponzu sauce is great on almost everything. Can't wait to go bac6k"

  • "Yummy food and friendly servers! Made reservations in advanced, which came in handy as there was about a 2hr wait. I picked this place for a birthday dinner with 5 other friends and I had a great time. Only con I'd say is parking, bring change."

  • "My husband and I had a late lunch (as well as many other patrons) and took advantage of the "Dine LA" special: choice of 3 meats; 1 vegetable side and 1 dessert, along with miso soup, salad and rice (white or brown) for $15/person. Cook your own meats and veggie at the table. Sapporo Beer was $1.50/stein. Very friendly and attentive service in an industrial setting near Old Town Pasadena shopping. There is an extensive ala carte menu and appears to be a hot spot for late night bites."

  • "Gyu-Kaku in Pasadena is a contemporary Japanese Restaurant. There are a wide variety of food offerings that you cook right at your table. The meat and vegetable items were fresh. A wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks were available. My date had never been to this kind of Japanese restaurant, so she liked it very much. My only criticism, was that the service was slow, but other than that this was a good place to eat in Pasadena. I'll be back."

  • "I like the overall food quality and all the meat was so tender that makes me drool! The service was good although they were pretty busy. It was a Saturday night that we visited. We have 5 people, but one of my friends was late, but they let us in as long as the majority arrived! We were worried about if we have to wait until he arrived to get a table. Totally awesome! Too bad they don't offer all you can eat anymore."

  • "Gyu-Kaku was a great experience. It reminds me of Korean BBQ with exceptional meat and awesome fried rice! The best fried rice that I have ever had! I would definitely come back here."

  • "Something is wrong with their time mgmt. in the kitchen. Went there to try the DineLA menu on 1/21/2014. Food is OK, but after the soup and salad, we waited at least 30 mins for the meat. At the meantime, my daughter and I just stared at the empty grill in front of us. And tables around us kept complaining about no food being served. And the waiters and waitresses kept apologizing for orders being backed up. But we were the first 5 tables there. What backed-up? I can't imagine what will be like if there is a full house."

  • "Took an hour to receive food and everyone was very hungry..the server said the kitchen was backed up but that's not a good excuse."

  • "Food is delicious, menu is great. All the must try's are amazing. The smoke level is very low unlike other spots"

  • "Went here for happy hour with a few friends. The service was awful. We went at 5:30 and planned on staying just for the hour until their specials ended. However, the service was so SLOW and the waiter screwed up our order so many times that we ended staying for 3 hours. We had to place our appetizer order 3 times because of a 'mix-up' in the kitchen, and it still wasn't right by the time they brought out all the dishes. We ordered a few plates of various meats and it took almost one hour to get those. They also brought out the dishes one by one with about 15/20 minutes in between each. When you are sitting at a table with 5 people and some of the dishes only have 4 pieces of meat on them, that is a real annoyance."

  • "Wait wasn't too long... (45-1hr) if I didn't put a reservation... except that I have made a reservation. The restaurant personnel apparently didn't mark that I arrived so I ended up waiting almost the same as not putting a reservation... That was the only frustrating part. Other than that everything else was great. Food was awesome and the servers were friendly and helpful and the environment was great. Happy hours are always a plus! Cheap and quality beer comes hand to hand with delicious bbq!"

  • "We ended up here on Christmas Eve and it was so much fun!! Truly a great experience. The staff was attentive (even though they were SUPER busy). The food is a bit commercialized but everything tasted good. All in all a really fun and unique way to spend the evening. I would definitely recommend this for a special occasion or fun night out with a group."

  • "I truly enjoy this location. (Pasadena - Old Town). Atmosphere is great. Location is great. Not to mention that when you have a great server that takes good care of their customers, well, that is a BIG PLUS."

  • "If you enjoy doing the bbq'ing, this is a good place to go. They have a lot of selection for meats and even seafood. Definitely recommend their galbi and their pork belly is also decent. The quality of the meats are also good."
    Dined on 12/8/2013
  • "While the food was uniformly tasty, between the tiny portion sizes and slow service, I was more hungry at the end of dinner than the beginning. Meat quality was top notch, but it takes so long to get a couple bites worth that it hardly seems worthwhile. It took more than 40 minutes from the time I sat down to getting a cold vegetable appetizer, and it wasn't a particularly busy night."
