A word from Gyu-Kaku - Kapiolani
Located 10 minute drive from Waikiki and the next block of Ala Moana Shopping Center, Gyu-Kaku is all about fun and food. You are your own chef, cooking premium cuts of beef, poultry, seafood and vegetables perfectly to your liking at your own smokeless charcoal barbeque. It is an ideal way to share a meal with family and friends. At Gyu-Kaku you can share the warmth not only of our delicious food, but also the warmth of those you love.
Gyu-Kaku, meaning “Horn of the Bull” in Japanese, is Japan's best loved yakiniku restaurant with over 800 locations across the land of the rising sun. Now Gyu-Kaku has come to Hawaii and the U.S. Mainland to offer Americans the same unsurpassed dining experience. Yaki (grilling) niku (meats) has its origins in the Korean barbecue style and now Gyu-Kaku has taken yakiniku to a new level with Japanese style appetizers, tapas, and a great selection of Japanese premium beer, sake and shochu.

  • "Me and my girlfriend went to Gyu-Kaku for our 2 year anniversary. We noticed the walls that used to divide the booths are gone. Which is a bummer, lost a lot of privacy which, we kind of wanted. With that being said because the walls are gone, the noise level in there is a little unbeareable at times. My waiter Cullen could barely hear me at times. Other than that the food is excellent along with its outstanding service."

  • "Made reservations online, had to wait awhile before being seated but the food and service we received was great! Too much food in the end but everything tasted awesome."

  • "This is the 2nd time we've been here in 2 wks.We absolutely luv the food. However, since we've been coming here, since 2007, the svc has gone downhill. I remember that it used to b exciting to walk into, a delight going in & u could tell everyone wanted to be there at work. Now, it seems as if the morale went down & servers don't want to be there.Servers don't know the menu, the drinks, etc. Bathroom was dirty, no toilet seat covers. Grill was broken, it was on high flame or nothing at all.It took a piece of folded paper to keep it on.My sis had some water dripping on her head, went to tell the staff & they just said,oh sorry. I admit, I'd probably still come here but would be nice to see more enthusiasm & pride in such a great restaurant."

  • "It wasn't busy, but table service lacked a little. We had to go up to get our checks when we were asked if we wanted them. Even with the "manager" there talking to the girl at the register. Everything else was fine, food is always good, especially when you can cook it to your liking. The two young gentlemen who bussed our table and gave us water, and waited on us the rest of the time were extremely hospitable and kept up very nicely. Not the greatest service I've had, but definitely no the worst."

  • "I brought my husband here for his Birthday. It was both of our first times. We only waited about 5 minutes to be seated whuch was awsome. Our waitress was soooooo nice and explained everything (menu, drinks, grill, etc) very clearly with a smile the whole night. The food was great. And my lihing margarita was delicious. All over a great place for any occasion."

  • "We really enjoy our occasional late evening meals. The food is consistently good and the customer service exemplary ... more than worth the traffic from the leeward side."

  • "Love this restaurant! Had a late dinner at the Torrance, Ca. location and was thrilled to learn there was one in Hawaii!! Had our anniversary dinner at the Honolulu location, and we were not disappointed! Food was awesome...presentation was fabulous...staff was wonderful! Love the S'Mores! Looking forward to going back soon...maybe during Happy Hour!"

  • "The food and service for our party of 6 was fantastic. I had pre-ordered the Kamehameha menu for our group, and the food came faster than we could eat and cook it! There was so much food we had to take some home. This restaurant is definitely a go-to place."

  • "The star at Gyu-Kaku is the grill. No smoke, just awesome direct flame that perfectly cooks your meal to perfection. I hosted dinner to two picky eaters and they loved the experience ..at 86 and 91 years old, you know what is good! Our waiter was outstanding and the constant attention to keep the dishes moving, changing the grill mid-meal, made us feel well-cared for and special. The quality of meats and variety of items to grill also made for a fun meal. Try to make it to happy hour and save a little too!"

  • "This was my third time here, but tonight was so problematic that I might stay away for awhile. Service issues: tongs not provided when the food was delivered; server turned down the fire when we were in the middle of cooking; server forgot to use the happy hour prices even though we had the red menus; mix ups with the rewards cards bringing us someone else's card Issues with the food: Chicken pieces were mismatched is size, some really big and others really small made it hard to cook; kalbi steak was unusually fatty and three pieces were not edible (considering you only get 4 oz. this was 1/3 of the portion) Of course with all the issues to top it off, I forgot to use my isle discount card to get $5 off bill. : ("

  • "I visited this place for a blind date (my first) and it was a great location for the occasion. Waiter was very helpful in explaining the options and the menu was filled with great choices. The food was great and the prices were reasonable..overall I would recommend this place and would revisit."

  • "We haven't been there for maybe eight months. We went for a belated Valentine's gift due to busy family schedule. There were three of us, two adults one child. We were able to make make same day reservations. Our table was ready on time. We felt welcome as we walked in. Placed our order. Drinks and food trickled in. Service fast, friendly and helpful. Drinks and food delicious. They cleaned out table throughout our time there which is nice. Then we ordered dessert which was delicious too. When the bill came we were shocked we actually thought it was going to be higher, forgot we still was on happy hour. We left with full happy tummies with money still left in wallet. Very good dining experience."

  • "after eating at the waikiki location and having the worst experience at this resturant chain possible, i was very pleased and surprised and the service i got from kapiolani. the service was great. even though we had a trainee for a waitress she gave us better service then the veteran at waikiki. i would recommend people to come to kapiolani anyday and stay away from waikiki.."

  • "I really enjoyed the energetic and casual atmosphere of Gyu-Kaku. Tables are spacious, food comes fast and servers were on their toes with orders and drink refills. The fun part is being able to cook your own food the way everyone in your party likes it. The 2 times I came here we made it in time for Happy Hour which was 20% almost everything on the menu. I would definitely reccommend this place to friends and family!"

  • "I don't know whether or not reserving months in advance had to do with it, but on Valentine's Day, I took my girlfriend back to this place of our first date, and we were seated in a private booth complete with Asian decor and some of the best food we've had to match."

  • "i had one experience at a yakiniku restaurant before which was poor; the thought of cooking your own meal at a restaurant irked me. when my friend told me that gyukaku was his favorite restaurant, i gagged, thinking about working for a meal im paying for. anyhow, i gave it a shot. it turned out to be a great experience at gyukaku! the food was so tasty, the place had a cool vibe, the servers were constantly in sight. i finally enjoy the yakiniku experience, thanks to gyukaku. btw, the happy hour is awesome. try it, do it, enjoy it..."

  • "Loved this meal, waiting in line was soon forgotten, once we got to the front to see all the action--the making of noodles, numerous selections to add on and delicious healthful dinner. A must do for Oahu-Waikiki foodies."

  • "I'm sorry but just do not go here. I had gone here with a party of 7 the other night and we were accommodated to the best of their ability. Sadly, our waiter was just horrific! We had taken our orders but when they arrived, half of the things that we ordered had not been there. It took an additional 20 minutes after the first round of appetizers just to get our gyu kaku nachos. Then, we barely saw our waiter after that. We saw the bus boy more! Seriously? The food portions are just too small and yes, over priced. The service was incredibly horrible and we wanted to tip the bus boy more for being more attentive to us. The syrup for the soda ran out and we were just left with water or coke for those who wanted soda but didn't drink it."

  • "Always the go-to spot for happy hour. You can never go wrong at gyukaku. Although, I don't especially care for their desserts. I always skip it and get dessert elsewhere. Other than that food and alcohol is always tasty!"

  • "the music was way too loud. I had to yell at the waiter in order for him to hear. not sure if they were short handed, because we had to wait a long time for our bill and to pay it."

  • "Food was good, cook your own, your way. Went during happy hour, prices are very affordable. The service was attentive and friendly. Becoming one of our regular eating places."

  • "We love this place and try to eat here often. The food is always good and service is friendly. This time we had a lot of problems with the heat in our cooker, it kept getting cooler. Each time we'd call over the server and he'd think it was fine but it would just die again. Eventually the manager was trying to keep it going but no luck and our shrimp dish wasn't so good after all that time. No apologies and no striking off the cost of the last dish from the menu. Disappointed that they don't have the dorayaki dessert anymore."

  • "Had a table that still had the charcoal in grill, last time we went was gas in a different table. Spoke to one of the staff and they said still some tables have charcoal, you can request if available when making reservations. I prefer the charcoal grill. Went during happy hour and it wasn't busy. They missed one of our orders so we just cancelled it and got check and left. We love this location. Was surprised that it wasn't busy during happy hour on a Sunday night. Don't know if they lost some customers after switching to gas grills."

  • "Gyu-Kaku wasn't the first place I thought of for an anniversary dinner, but I'm glad I we ended up deciding to go! The food was great and the service was exceptional! I am highly opinionated when it comes to discussing restaurant quality, and I think Gyu-Kaku is an excellent restaurant! Happy hour with my man was just perfect!!"

  • "My family brought me here for my birthday dinner and it was delicious! We had an attentive waiter who explained the menu carefully and identified each dish as it arrived at the table. The youngest in our party was 17 and the oldest was 80 - we ALL enjoyed the meal, the service, the food, the fun of cooking to our own tastes. The prices were right - got value for our dollar. I really recommend this restaurant to everyone. Get a quiet nook and cook a romantic meal for your honey or grab a big booth so you can go with a group and eat drink & be merry!"
