Diner Reviews
  • "Food was great and staff was awesome. Meat was very fresh and the garlic noodles were to die for."

  • "I have been here twice and I have enjoyed it on both occasions. The waiters/waitresses are attentive and friendly and the food is great. It is a busy, bustling restaurant but the booths are very comfortable and give a more private dining experience. I will definitely return. They have a rewards program as well."

  • "Great food, service good overall.. But, why do you always try to seat me in the horrid tables when the restaurant is almost empty??? This time around, there were many empty tables, yet we were told to share a table with a family of four, a FAMILY!! We were told that the numerous empty tables were for guests with reservations. Well we HAD reservations! We were then seated at our own table (we weren't even asked whose name reservation was under...). BTW, when we left, most of those same tables were still empty. Otherwise, the food was good and service was quick and cordial."

  • "I am not a fun of BBQ, because sometime even if the meat is well prepared, most people still can't do it all right to make it very delicious. I would like a pan of teriyaki than BBQ by myself. However, Gyu-Kaku will tell you exactly how to cook each kind of meat well. And the guys are really happy to help you. They change the grill very often and brush on new oil for you so that you won't see a lot of mess on your grill. must tries: beef tongue, folded mushrooms, pork belly."

  • "Even though I have been to this restaurant a few times already, I still can be surprised by the wonderful customer service of the waiters! I know some of the waiters pretty well since I've been here many times since I discovered it 3 years ago. I went to the restaurant this Monday for my birthday and they surprised me with their own version of a birthday cake. It was fantastic! I will continue to go to this restaurant and keep on bringing more and more friends as well!"

  • "My friend and I have both been to Gyu-Kaku before (I in Hawaii and she in Miami), but not yet in our new home, NY. Although a little tough to find (it's in the building of The Village Voice) it was great. Not too loud, and a great crowd (no NYU kiddos). Celine was our server and was attentive, friendly and put up with our silliness. We came in on a Saturday night, so no happy hour special for us, although I would really like to return for it during the week. As for the food, it's that same as all other Gyu-Kakus, so no disappointment there. We got exactly what we wanted - yay!"

  • "I've been coming to this restaurant for a couple of years and the service has always been excellent. The servers are knowledgeable of the menu which is a plus in this type of establishment. I try to go during happy hour because some of the deals are excellent. Dining here is an experience, don't rush, enjoy your food and atmosphere."

  • "I have been to Gyu-Kaku many times and I loved every experience in that restaurant. The waiters are helpful & courteous. I went during the happy hour time and the waiters would give you friendly reminders about the time limit of happy hour. They even allow us to order desserts in advance so we got them at happy hour prices! The ambience of the restaurant feels like a hipster kind of place where you can let loose and enjoy a great time with your family & friends. The noise level is quite moderate, so I don't have to worry about whispering to everyone. Overall, it is a great dining experience and I will definitely keep going back."

  • "When I reserved a table online, I mentioned that the visit would be for my husband birthday. And surprisingly, he received a very cute complimentary ice cream. The server was very friendly and helpful. Food was very good. The happy hour menu price is reasonable. We will definitely go back again."

  • "WE have been celebrating the start of camp with my family here for 6 yrs (and other times) and have never been so disappointed in the service and ambiance. This place has turned into an expensive fast food joint. The food arrived before we could put our napkins on our lap and we were constantly harassed if we wanted more. No sooner had we placed out food on the grill did the dish disappear and not in a good way. My daughter's drink disappeared before she could eat her fruit at the bottom. Ughhh. Not again. Time for a new tradition."

  • "Yakiniku (Japanese barbecue, basically) is one of my favorites, and Gyu Kaku is a restaurant I would go to a lot in Japan. It's fun, you can do the meat as well done or rare as you like, there are a bunch of different sauces to dip in (asks for minced garlic and the other sauces that are not on the table too), and the happy hour deals make it so affordable. Half priced beer and liquor and deeply discounted food choices at lunch and in the afternoon, even on the weekends. You can't beat this place."

  • "As always, gyu kaku does not disappoint. My server Bobby was very attentive and nice. The food was great! I would highly recommend the bistro hanger steak."

  • "Main courses were a bit pricey considering the portion size but appetizers and Happy Hour drink prices were terrific. Would definitely go there again for apps and drinks during Happy Hour."

  • "I went here for July 4th, for the all you can eat special. The all you can eat consisted of selected marinated meats along with starting appetizers and other items. It was perfect and i was really satisfied with the food. Servers were very respectful and kind to help us. Service at this place is great and would definitely recommend anyone to go and have a try. Can't wait to go back next time for a good meal :)"

  • "The food are great and it was so much fun play with the for! The service is amazing, the waiters/esses are so attentive and polite. The price is high though for dinner. So go for lunch or happy hour. You just have to order by 6 to get the happy hour price. I am going back next week. The lady M Mile Crepe cake is also to die for! Drink is only $5 for happy hour."

  • "Gyu-Kaku is an interesting dining experience. It definitely makes sense to arrive within the time frame that is considered happy hour (until 6 pm, I believe) as the menu options are pricey without the discounts. It is a Japanese BBQ-style restaurant where diners cook meats at a burner on the table. Some of our party were concerned about under-cooking meats and many of us charred our veggies. If you can master the timing, however, it is fun, flavorful, and worth the experience."

  • "Gyu Kaku is a great place to dine at, especially when you take advantage of their happy hour specials. They have a lot of items, which includes drinks and food, that has be price reduced. The service was impeccable, staff were attentive and very responsive. The best bang for your buck would be the Lunch Set which includes your meats to grill along with soup, salad, rice and also a dessert at the end."

  • "Great fun, the initial explanation by our waiter was great for us first timers. It really helped to know what to expect and the food was fresh and delicous. Very good service. A great unique dining experience at a relatively affordable price. "

  • "The day We went was great. The waiters are very attentive and I can tell they try their best. Everytime I come in I notice the bar ambient gets more and more American... But i see it is a way to adopt in.. I love the fact that when they take orders and welcome in new customers they shout in Japanese and that's what they do in Japan and it kind of bring them together. The meat quality is one of the best here in NY. The yakiniku salsas here are top notch just the same as in Japan. I'd love that they fix the restroom situation. Years ago it used to be kept neater and cleaner. It is not only their fault, costomers have to respect and use it clean but the restroom looks like it is not taken care of:( But I know I'd come here once a month:)"

  • "The waiter forgets to put the burner on...20 minutes later a bunch of uncooked meat sitting on the grill...I ask to see manager and he agrees to take off the 2 cheapest items off our bill...literally couldn't eat a thing...worst dining experience EVER !!!!"

  • "This place was recommended to my boyfriend and I by a friend, so we went into it with a positive attitude. That being said, we were blown away with how good the food was! We had the "Ninja Course Meal" for 2, and we felt like food just kept coming. Everything was delicious, and the courses were put together in a fantastic way. Our waiter Ben was attentive but not annoying, and he really set a great vibe. The Pina-Mojito drink was amazing, and Ben even recommended us the best sake for our meal. We will definitely be back. Great for dates, parties, and families alike. A definite must go! "

  • "Ok the food is not amazing but it is not about the food - it is about the fun experience of having some drinks and putting some shrimps on the barbie. Servers were nice enough and a two minute walk from the public theater if you are seeing a show. Bring the kids they will love it."

  • "I'm a semi frequent Gyukaku diner so my recent visit to the East Village location was nothing new. Though it was the first time I had booked via open table. I was running a few minutes late, but a friend was there earlier and let them know. Thankfully they did not mind holding my reservation while I was 10-15 minutes late. Also it was a few minutes before their dinner happy hour ended at 6pm and they always honor happy hour prices as long as you order before 6."

  • "I have been to several Gyu-Kaku locations but this one has to be the absolute worst. I arrived with my party of 6 at 9:20pm, in advance of our 9:30pm reservations. We were notified that the current table had their check and would be leaving in "2 minutes". That's fine, we sat at the bar in the meantime. Little did we know 2 minutes minutes would turn in 10 minutes, which would become 15, and ultimately 25 minutes for us to be seated. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but the manager was the one seating us didn't even voice an apology. You'd expect better customer service from a manager, but that was not that case. To make matters worse, the food arrived 30 min after we ordered and by then, it was already last call. Don't come here."

  • "I love this place. I've been about 3 - 4 times and I am never disappointed. Food is great, service is better. It's a great place to go with one person or with a group. They even sang happy birthday to my husband! We greatly enjoy it every time. "

  • "If you are ok cooking you're own stuff, this is one of the best places for a fun dinner for two or more. The happy hours rock. Yes, plural. It's loud during peak hours, but it's still romantic if you want it to be - you're doing things for each other and the lighting is nice. If you have a group, you're making the noise, too. Lunch is quiet and there's plenty of stuff on the menu that you don't have to cook if you don't want to."

  • "Great deal for a group to check out for their happy hour. Almost everything on the menu is half off. One turnoff was that they serve all their grilled meats by weight so don't be surprised if you get 6 pieces of "horumon" for 2 orders...it just means you got bigger pieces...well lets hope that is true."

  • "For my girlfriends 30th birthday she wanted to try Hibachi. After searching for a good spot we decided on Gyu-Kaku. Overall the servers were great and helped everyone out being our first time eating Hibachi. Food was great too. Nothing bad to say. Definitely will be going back."

  • "You can expect the same great service on every single visit from almost all the servers at any locations of Gyukaku in NYC! Our parents were very impressed about our server's attentive service. We will keep having our birthday dinner for our family 4/yr... Thank you Gyukaku."
