Diner Reviews
  • "Great food! Love the BBQ there. There is always a lot of people, remember to make reservation prior your meal, it will save your time! Happy hour is much cheaper than regular hour."

  • "Overall this restaurant was wonderful. The food was DELICIOUS (even with my boyfriend and I in charge of the grill!) We had never gone to a restaurant like this before and decided to try something new to celebrate me getting a new job. They had a great drink selection and the specialty drinks were a few dollars cheaper if bought in the bar rather than at the table. When we arrived on time for our reservation, our table was not ready. However that allowed us to order cheaper drinks by starting the night in the bar. Our host initially led us to the 3rd floor by mistake as he misheard our table number. He was extremely apologetic. The prices were reasonable and we both left extremely satisfied with a bill under $50."

  • "Just of Michigan Ave this is a great restaurant. I try to get there either for drinks at the upstairs bar for dinner at least once a week. The staff are friendly and the prices especially at happy hour are outstanding. bistro hirami hangar steak, Yakishabu brisket, japanese sweet potatoes with sukiyaki kimchi bi bim bap is my favorite combo! But almost everything is good"

  • "The food was very light, sweet, and tasteful. The waiter was nice and recommended special which was polite. I'm definitively coming back for more."

  • "Food was good. Management rushed us out of our table before we got a chance really get settled after our meal. I found that rude."

  • "We try to get here a couple times a month, and food is always great. Super fast service but you can cook/eat at your own pace. Great music (mostly 90's songs that you forgot how much you love). Lots of Happy Hour options."

  • "My friend and I tried out this place on a whim for her birthday and we fell in love right away. The server was excellent he explained the menu to us thoroughly since it was our first time and even showed us how to cook the meat so that it wouldn't burn. He even gave us a treat since it was her birthday and the whole experience was just wonderful! We can't wait to go again I think this will be our new hangout spot."

  • "The food was good. We had the" meat lovers" which was great except that we got a the beef and the chicken and shrimp was served at the very end. Would have been nice if it was mixed up. We were already full by the time we got the chicken and shrimp and did not get to enjoy that course so much."

  • "Great overall experience. I have been multiple times and enjoy Gyu-Kaku each time I dine. I highly recommend it for the different dining experience of cooking your own food over the open table grill."

  • "Javi was our server. He was fantastic!!! Great attitude and very attentive to our many requests. Answered all of our questions. Had the expectation that this would be similar to Benihana but it was by far way better. At Benihana, everything starts to taste the same blended together, but here, the meats each have a different flavor and they all taste SO GOOD. You get to cook yourself which is a fun dining out experience. Happy hour prices are great. My friends and I would definitely go back and highly recommend this restaurant. We were also glad we made a reservation through OpenTable. We got seated right away but we overheard the wait time was about 45 minutes. This is a popular place to eat."

  • "Never a complaint. Japan doing it right in Chicago. Thank you for coming. I always enjoy and so do all the friends new to the experience."

  • "You cook much of the food yourself which is part of the fun. I had two teenagers with me so they thought it was great. Food is very good, but can be a little bland due to no seasonings while cooking the meat. If you are looking for a fun place, this gets a thumbs up. If you are looking for fine dining, probably would look else where."

  • "Service: I enjoyed having Jessica(?) as my server. It wasn't the first time that I've been the gyukaku so I liked that she quickly went through key reminders (using tongs instead of chopsticks when grilling etc etc).I appreciated her recommendations. She checked back with us a lot and offered to change the grill without us asking her to (usually I had to ask). Food: It's not the first time I've been here. I always order 2 orders of chicken breast and toro beef along with some other stuff, however this time the amount of meat I had was significantly smaller and a bit salty. Two orders looked like it was just one order, I would expect the amount of food and taste to be more consistent. The spicy pork was great though."

  • "I absolutely love Gyu Kaku. When ever it's ladies night this is always my suggestion. I have recommended this place to everyone I know. The food is to die for and that white peach cosmo is the best on the planet!!"

  • "Three of us out looking for good food and fun. We found it here, Our waitress recommended several dishes that we ordered and we loved them all. The quantity was perfect and her recommendations were perfect as well. I would definately go back."

  • "Reservation is meaningless. My reservation was on 9pm, but i got seats around 9:30. The host let some people who did not have reservation in first. That does not make any sense. The food is good. I will come back for their food. BBQ is really good. Hopefully I won't see the same host again."

  • "This place was pure chaos. Had an 8:30 reservation and was told it would be "in all honesty a 15-20 minute wait" which became 45. Another party of the same exact size with a 9:00 reservation came in 30 min after us and got seated first. When were finally seated there were about 25 open seats on that level yet they had a packed house downstairs still waiting. The food was just ok. There was a distinct disconnect with the ambiance. Maybe it's just me, but when you force everyone to take off their shoes before entering the dining room, it seems like the vibe might be more zen like than the Beach Boys, and 80s tunes cranked to "11". Our actual server was nice, but I'm rating the service on the overall employee interaction/experience."

  • "I showed up on-time to my reservation and was greeted with a mess of people in the lobby. After waiting to talk to the host, I was told I'd be seated 30 minutes after my reservation "because it's a busy day" and that I could wait in the bar and buy a drink. I'm really not a fussy diner, but this was ridiculous, and to be asked to spend more than planned because Gyu-Kaku didn't have its act together rubbed me the wrong way. And the host was rude and seemed offended that I was offended at the wait time tacked onto my reservation, as if it was my fault and this was the price I had to pay. I think within 15 minutes is acceptable to wait, and Gyu-Kaku probably took too many walk-ins and allowed tables to squat."

  • "As the title indicates this is my favorite place to go regularly in Chicago. I love the Kalbi Toro, Bistro Hirami Hangar steak, and the japanese sweet potatoe among just a few awesome things on the menu. Good bar upstairs and make sure you try the Nigori if you are a sake drinker."

  • "This is our 3rd time at Gyu-Kaku and like all other visits, we had a great time enjoying the food and service. Our server Jessica was very attentive and her small touches didn't go unnoticed. Because we had ordered a lot of food, she made sure that our orders arrived in a staggered fashion so that it doesn't crowd out the small table. We were also pleasantly surprised that our salad was already pre-divided into 4 portions when it arrived at our table. The music on this day seemed rather loud and with a full restaurant with large groups, it was a very noisy environment which made it very hard to chat with our guests who had arrived from overseas."

  • "I made a reservation for 7 pm but had to wait over 30 minutes to be seated. Plus I mentioned through special request that we were celebrating a birthday but the waiter did nothing special. We were terribly disappointed since we were anticipating a little birthday recognition. Made our special celebration a bit sad."

  • "I'm new in town, been trying differing places. This is one of the best, and I try to go there as often as I can. Very well done meats, don't now how they do the souses but they are excellent. Great atmosphere. Very good drinks as well, but bar is not their main thing. Quality of food is always great. Great service. Recommended."

  • "It was a memorable restaurant. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. I could tell my server was pacing us, and not just throwing food at us one after another, which I was grateful for. They were very patient, and explained everything well. It'd be a fun place for a first date!"

  • "Dinner at Gyu-Kaku was a very unique and enjoyable experience. They give you meats and vegetables to cook yourself at the table, and all of the food was delicious. We really enjoyed the steak selections, as well as the prepared appetizers and the bibimbap. The restaurant is in a great location downtown and there are several levels each with different lay-outs and seating styles. We were on the third floor, which was a bit more intimate and had seats on the floor. It was quite an experience and we will surely be back for another visit. It's a bit pricey, so it's probably a special-occasion sort of place for most (us included). But it's well worth the money in terms of quality and quantity."

  • "i booked table at 9 p.m. but did not get it until 13 mins after 9. point is we had no place to wait as gyu bar was packed. receptionist did not really care and was no apologetic at all in her nature. The one who took us to the table was even worse. she did her job which is the easiest job in the world unsatisfactorily. she did it like a robot. But waiters are nice and kept apologizing to us which made our mood better. food is nice too. why we have to wait if we book at table at time we want ?"

  • "Great experience. Enjoyed the food and even though it was a busy Saturday night, the server and runners were really attentive. Had 7 people and got the Meat Lovers special for 6 and had more than enough food! Food was really good, can't wait to go back. Can't believe it was my first time here. A bigger bonus, you don't smell after you leave."

  • "I give it 5 stars for my experience. My husband and I had Valentine's Day reservations. When we got there the hostess had menus in hand. We told her our name and time and we didn't even have time to take our coats off before we were led to our table. No wait time what so ever. Food was amazing and fun to cook on the grill, inexpensive and filling. We choose the valentines day special and nearly couldn't finish it between the 2 of us. Even though the restaurant was full it wasn't loud or uncomfortable in any way. The service was equally amazing. No wait time on drink refills, if our waitress noticed we were almost finished with a drink she was over asking if we wanted another. All in all, I will definitely return and probably quite often."
