- Probably the best restaurant in San CarlosWendyDined on 11/15/2014Gusto is probably the best restaurant in San Carlos. The food is exceptional and the service is attentive. I never order steaks in restaurants as they are something we love to grill at home, but I made an exception here and thought it was one of the best steaks I've ever had. Small endive salads, sent to apologize for melon were great. My wife's steak was excellent, but my two scallops were good but not quite enough. We were seated by the kitchen/bar and it was fairly busy in that spot.

They were very nice about changing the reservation time when his flight was 30 min late and SFO was a mess adding another 30 min. Finally made it at 9:45. We decided to sit in the front room. This was tiny, but we didn't want to be outside basically on the street or in the long dark inside part of the restaurant. Service was hit or miss. All really nice and knowledgeable, but seemed to come and go randomly. The much needed wine took a long time to come. The food was great, grilled figs, sole and sea bass. Although the sea bass was a fish served whole. Unexpected, but reminded me of ones my grandfather caught and served us.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.

This was a business dinner and we were seated in one of the backroom round tables where it was quiet and perfect for conversation. The waiter was very knowledgeable and let us take our time throughout the evening. The food was the star attraction. Desserts leave much to be desired as they don't seem to fit the rest of the menu and atmosphere of the restaurant. Most disappointing was the tables are so close to each other that you hear everyone else's conversations. Sound travels very loudly on this restaurant. However, overall it is worth a try as the food is excellent.I would recommend this to a friend.

They not only had a smile but look and sounded like they loved working there. Our waiter was excellent; very good at explaining the dishes and how each was prepared. Great timing and attentiveness. He was always around when we had questions or needed to take our orders without us needing to ask but my wife and I were able to have great converstions without interupption. The food was fantastic from the salad and starter to the main course and dessert. Have added this to our list of favorite local destinations for another night out.Special Features:

I don't recall how George said he cooked a new york roast but the rare piece he cut off for me just melted in my mouth with the flavor throughout. My wife had Salmon and they prepared a pasta and breaded chicken meal for our 3 year old. I had the strawberry cobbler with vanilla Gelato. George was kind enough to surprise our son with a sundae. The place has a very neighborhood feel to it because of George and the others working there. We will definitely be back there regularly. I am so glad I found it, as I will certainly come again and will recommend to friends. The good was outstanding, and the wine recommendations were excellent. The wait staff took a long time to come to the table, but once we ordered they were attentive. Beginning with an excellent crab cake, through a salad with maybe the best dressing we've ever tasted, and on to my special salmon main course with sautéed mushrooms... A peach cobbler dessert topped off the evening. Gusto's wine list is also excellent. This restaurant gem should be on the SF Chronicle's 100 Best Restaurants list. For a starter we shared and enjoyed 2 orders of the ahi tuna tartare, which was as good as always. As main courses, 2 had the duck breast, 1 the lamb, and 1 the scallops. All the entrees were outstanding. Since we had such diverse selections, we ordered wine by the glass from the very comprehensive list. Gusto serves some of the best cuisine on the middle peninsula. I am not a fan of watermelon but that soup made me a fan. The corn soup was creamy and light. Second course was George's famous tuna tartare - perfect every time. Third course was the grilled scallops with grilled pineapple and grilled mushrooms - wow! Fourth course was mushroom pasta - gone to heaven and back. Fifth course was chilean sea bass perfectly cooked. Last course was the duck breast with ravioli. This course had a few variations of duck on the plate including the duck ravioli. The menu clearly displays Chef George Morrone's experience and talent - - this is a San Carlos neighborhood restaurant that rivals the best restaurants in San Francisco. The watermelon gazpacho is simultaneously refreshing and zesty; the Greek salad with heirloom tomatoes was perfection. The entrees were delicious and really teased the tastebuds. We had read earlier reviews that raised concerns about the service - - we found the staff to be attentive, informed and responsive without being overbearing. Although his restaurant was packed, chef George (previous from Aqua in the city) checked on us himself several times. Main courses included quail, duck breaks with an outstanding duck confit ravioli and veal shortribs. Dessert was spectacular too, especially the butterscotch pot au creme. There are an array of enticing starters, and I usually settle for the tuna tartare, prepared with Asian pear and pine nuts, which is a special of the house. Nightly specials allow the crew to prepare some remarkable dishes, and tonight's was veal shortribs, soft enough to fall off the bones, and dressed with a delicious, piquant sauce. There is an extensive wine list, and several nice wines are availableby the glass. It was fantastic. Ice cold and so fresh. A twist on tomato gazpacho with the addition of sweet but not overpowering watermelon. The vegetables were amazingly fresh, crisp and cold. My main course was a rare beef tenderloin. It was wonderful. My wife had a bowl of corn soup (creamy and delicious) along with ahi tartare. Because of the heat wave we sat outside, which made the occasion more special with a European feel (had requested outdoors on Open Table, but they don't guarantee it, so we may just have gotten lucky). The service was slow, but this is exactly what we wanted for our anniversary and it was lovely not to feel rushed into leaving and to be able to prolong the evening (19:30-21:40) with three courses.
