  • Relaxing dinner at Gumbo's!

We enjoyed our dinner outside looking over the lake nearby! The weather was perfect, not real noisy, and the food was tasty! Gumbo's is not far from Lakeway where we live; we enjoyed it all!

Great food at reasonable prices but need to keep kids separate from other diners. I don't pay these prices to listen to other people's kids. We worked around naptime out of respect for others; I expect same from current parents.

  • Not what we remembered!

Our family used to live in North Austin about 6 years ago but moved out of state. We finally moved back to South Austin and were so excited to come back to some of our favorite restaurants. And Gumbo's was one of those. This time we took our children and they had a very nice kids menu. The menu was the same from years ago but the food and quality was not the same. Our server was new and didn't know how to open a bottle of wine! That should be serving 101! Then we order our food and the steak came our medium well instead of medium rare. Not sure if we will go back but our memories of Gumbos are much better than what reality really is!

I made reservations through Open Table which is a good idea. This Friday night visit had a good crowd in the dining area, but not much in the bar or on the large patios. We has a large booth which was perfect for our party of four. This was our first time at this location so we were acquainted with the menu. Shrimp cocktail and Wedge Salad were perfect. Fish entres were cooked perfectly. We will definitely return!

The music was way too loud to carry on a decent conversation. We told waitress and she had them turn the sound down, which they did. People don't come to a restaurant like this to be blown away by the music.

It's not the server's fault. The kitchen was soooo slow. The restaurant was relatively empty and the food not overly complicated. It was hard to imaging why the food comes out so slowly.

  • Gumbo's is just OK

We have been to Gumbo's several times. Very nice indoor dining room and (if it's not too hot) very nice outdoor patio. Service is very good and knows menu. Problem is that the food is unremarkable. For example, shrimp cocktail is previously frozen mid-sized shrimp, the kind that is precooked in the counter at HEB or Randalls. Last night the choice of fish were Tilapia, Salmon, Mahi - I don't think these are from the Gulf. The preparation is "OK". My mahi was on the dry side, not much flavor. Good mixed drinks, reasonable wine list. So Gumbo's is "OK" but nothing to be enthusiastic about. Others must agree as the place is often nearly empty on many nights.

The kitchen lost our ticket so we waited a very long time for our meal. The waitress apologized profusely and gave me a free glass of wine. I actually think our dinner should have been comped. I also feel the waitperson should have realized that we were waiting too long for our food and talked to the kitchen before 45 minutes passed.... The food was good and we like the atmosphere but we waited far too long to eat.

  • Not The Best

The food at Gumbos was okay but unfortunately the service wasn't the best. The waitstaff was nice enough but they lacked basic skills. The handed hot entrees to us instead of putting them on the table and they mixed up our food so bad that some of us were finished while others were still waiting for entrees. This was not the best experience and I felt bad that we brought out of towners here for a nice meal.

We celebrated my husband's birthday (party of 10) and were so pleased! My original reservation asked to set us up outside, but when we got there it was just a bit too warm and windy. So we asked to Keely to move inside. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. The waiter, Jeff, was just outstanding! He was very attentive to the needs of our guests and gracious. Everyone raved about the food. We are so grateful that Gumbo's made our celebration so special!

From the moment I called to see if we could arrive earlier than our reservation until the time we walked out of the door, it was outstanding. Wait staff was attentive, congenial and accomodating. Food was excellent - the portions were appropriate (I appreciate it when restaurants don't give you such large portions you have to take half home) and it was just a very enjoyable experience.

The food was excellent. Service was slow and although the restaurant was not crowded, they seemed understaffed. Missed simple things like providing linen and silverware. Had to be asked twice to get them. Appetizers served after main course due to mixup and also had some mixups on side dishes. We will go back again though as the food was that good and the service, while haphazard, was done with smiles.

Ate here on a Saturday night. I took my wife here for her Birthday. We had eaten at the Gumbo's location downtown many times before but since it's closed we decided to try the Bee Caves location. The food was just as good but the restuarant at bee caves has a much more informal, neighborhood feel, not like the more upscale, elegant feel of the downtown location.

It has been many, many years since I have not given a tip. The service was so bad that we almost left. From bringing out bread to getting our drinks (20min) to getting our food. (Not quite an hour). We asked our waitress politely several times that we had a show to go to but I finally had to go to a manager and ask to cancel the order before it finally came out. Also, after taking our salad plates she did bit replace the fork or knives so we waited again. The food was good but a restaurant is also about the experience.

Our previous experiences with this location of Gumbo's are bad. My wife and I decided to give it one final chance - and we're happy we did. The reception staff still needs some coaching, but our waiter was great and the food was excellent. They have a very small wine list, but the bottle pricing is outstanding. We will happily continue returning as long as the service, food quality, and wine pricing remain the same as this visit!

It's a great cozy restaurant, but yet energetic on the patio where they had great live entertainment....so you get the best of both worlds for atmosphere....there's also a great cozy fireplace out on the patio! our waitress was very sweet and helfpul...sometimes the drinks came out a tad slow, but perhaps the bars fault?? ...would definitely go back!!!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2013
    Dined on 2/14/2013
We went there for Valentines thinking it would be similar to the old Gumbos downtown. It was nothing like it. Far from intimate or upscale. We asked for bread twice, had empty water glasses multiple times, our orders were messed up- when I asked the waiter what a sauce was, she asked to look at my menu to see how it was spelled. My steak and sides came out saturated in the sauce the steak was marinated in. It was too salty too finish. The vegetables and grits were sitting in the sauce as well. Part of our disappointment came from the hope it was like the other restaurant. However we both decided we would not go back even if the situation was different. The food was too expensive for the quality and service.
