Diner Reviews
  • "Food, beverages and service were excellent. Reserved table had a window view of patio seating. Somewhat noisy, but table conversations were adequate."

  • "I've lived in Durham for more than 13 years and have been to guglehpf many times for breakfast/brunch. I've not been overly impressed and I'm generally not a big fan of German food. On a whim we decided to go for dinner (I didn't even know they served dinner). One of the better dinners I've had in Durham, comparable on the level of magnolia grill. (RIP). My wife and I started with the scallops. There were only two scallops which was disappointing for a $12 dish, but the beautiful and complex purée/sauce that accompanied it made up for it. I had the pan roasted chicken and wife had flounder. Both were well prepared, perfect sear great seasoning. Again the highlight was the sauce. Awesome complex broth reduction. Dessert was ok. Recommended!"

  • "My German half gives the Wienerschnitzel 5 stars! Accompanied with a good medley of crisp, tasty vegetables. Nice selection of draft beer, especially the Reissdorf Kölsch, which is a good choice at 4.8% alcohol content for a lighter beer that pairs well with a wide variety of foods. Prost!"

  • "Off night is what I suspect. We have always enjoyed delicious meals here in the past. Mussels were small and I actually didn't finish them because the flavor was off and I was concerned they were not fresh. One person in our group ordered the veal schnitzel special. It was under cooked and the meat so tough it was in edible. We left feeling sad. We won't be back anytime soon."

  • "We went to the Austrian Wine dinner. As expected, great food and wine. Would recommend these dinners"

  • "Went to the Austrian Wine Tasting. INCREDIBLE! White wines (which we normally don't drink) were really good and the food was to die for. Shrimp, scallops, chicken and veal - all outstanding. Only our 2nd time here but we will be back. Did I mention this is also a bakery? Absolutely the best bread in the area, Visit - you won't be sorry."

  • "Can't believe I've lived here for so long without trying this place for dinner. I thought it was just a bakery. I had two small plates: a wilted salad with fiddle heads and a fried egg. So good. Then I had fried quail with spaetzel. Yum. And all served on a large patio outside that is sunken in the ground so we felt miles away from the street. Cool decor and a moving fountain complete the vibe."

  • "servers did not seem well versed in dealing with children....i.e. getting their food out in a timely manner...but otherwise had a wonderful experience. Food was inventive and delicious"

  • "We have been to Guglhupf for brunch and for dinner. Brunch in the summer is wonderful as the outdoor seating is very pleasant. Service isn't great as it is usually crowded for brunch. The dinner menu was small and the service was absolutely terrible. We were seated at our table but not offered bread or water for 10 minutes. Our salads were very fast to come out, but our entrees took 20 minutes after our salads arrived. The food was good, the ambiance was great, and the service was terrible."

  • "I have read most of the reviews and Honestly these folks who give these folks a 2 star are just whiners and can't be pleased, I DRIVE A HOUR AND HALF TO EAT AT THIS OUTSTANDING PLACE, FOOD IS GREAT AND THE FOLKS ARE GREAT, EVERYONE SHOULD TRY THIS PLACE. THANKS RJB."

  • "We enjoyed our recent dining experience at Guglhupf. The food was excellent, average portion size. Both food and drink prices are a little high. $7 for an average size beer is a bit of a stretch. The ambiance is very pleasant, nice date night."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner very much. The German specialties were exceptional. The only fault was with the cabbage rolls: althought the dish was delicious the cabbage was undercooked and difficult to cut and eat. The noodles were the table favorite. The seafood special was outstanding. The smoked trout salad exceptional. The desserts were just as wonderful. The servings were good size and served very hot. The staff was friendly and accommodated us with a last minute change to our reservation without any problem. Wish we lived in the area to go back!"

  • "Having visitors from New York, who are used to excellent, eclectic dining choices, we thought long and hard about finding someplace different and memorable for dinner. Guglhupf fit the bill perfectly with a menu that includes German, Alsatian, and continental small plates, appetizers and main dishes. We began with the wurst plate and the alsatian potato leek tart (delicious). My husband had the wiener schnitzel, and I had another small plate offering - mussels in reisling. Our guests raved about the appetizers and the homemade sausage plate. We had just enough room to share two desserts - a mouth-watering sacher torte and a black cherry tarte. The service was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Can't wait to return for brunch!"

  • "We had heard Guglhupf was a very good German Restaurant so another couple and we tried it out. Approaching the restaurant, it was noticeably run down and the windows were extremely dirty. We inhaled deeply and went in. We had arrived 15 minutes before our reservation. The restaurant does not have a traditional at. We were surprised that there were nit many traditional German items on the menu. I've never been to a German Restaurant that didn't have Sauerbratten, but now I have. The Schnitzel was very good. I had expected spatzel but that was an extra. Sausage entree was mediocre. Chicken liver appetizer was extremely salty and would be undeniable to anyone who was not a salt-a-holic. This was out last trip to Guglhupf."

  • "The food was beyond what I was expecting in a great way. I did think $50 for two people who drank water and just had a main course was a tad expensive. I will go back for brunch but not for dinner again. The food was as close to authentic as I've had in the states. My service was kind as well"

  • "I was looking forward to trying this place for a long time. The short ribs were tough, the cabbage dish was undercooked and no one in our party of 6 loved their food. The service was even worse. Our server did not know the kind of fish that was the special. She also didn't tell us what they were out of until we tried to order it. We were seated at an upstairs table and our server literally barely slowed down as she ran by our table to ask if we needed anything. Won't go back."

  • "Every time we go, we get the chef's special and we are never disappointed. My husband got a HUGE Lamb shank. It was falling off the bone and fork-tender."

  • "A patisserie / German restaurant. We had their 1) sausage - not much flavor on the plate 2 little gherkin pickles bland brown lentils, pasta - tender homemade noodles creamy best of all things ordered, chicken - tender moist good, weiner schnitzel - crispy tender ordinary. German & Austrian wines, decent beer selection including St Bernardus. Limited liquor selection. Probably won't return."

  • "We have wanted to try Guglhaup, and I just had to check the name was correct, for a while. We tried to find it several months ago but our navigation device felt otherwise. Our determination paid off wonderfully with an exceptional Sausage Plate for me and tasty Stuffed Cabbage dish for my wife. The wine, recommended by our server was Austrian from Netzl Vineyard. The grape was called Zweitzl (spelling?) a medium red that was very good. We will certainly be back and with friends.."

  • "Our entree order was mishandled, creating a 50-minute gap between appetizer and main course. The waitress apologized but did nothing to accommodate an accelerated dessert order, even though we told her when we were seated that dessert was what we were most looking forward to. There was no management intervention during the excessive delay - even though the table beside us ordered, ate, and finished their meal (including dessert) before we were served our entree. The food was good, not great, and certainly not worth putting up with the lousy service!"

  • "I have not tried much in the way of German food, but Guglhupf did not disappoint! The atmosphere was charming and cozy, and the service was pretty good. The wine list was a little short, and as expected featured largely German wines. (If you love Riesling, you will love the wine list). The food was the star of the show and we will definitely be back. It looks like it would be an awesome outdoor brunch spot in the warmer weather."

  • "I've visited there at various times and with different size groups. The food is always been consistent and excellent. I especially like their homemade sausage. My wife and I recently had our 25th anniversary dinner there and the entire experience was wonderful. Of course we sampled their signature bakery items for dessert. My only complaint is that when it's busy it's hard to find a seat with self-service seating. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "My husband had been recommended to this place by a friend that lives in Durham (we live in Raleigh), so we decided to try it out before a show at the DPAC one Saturday evening. Everything was fantastic, from the service to the food selection to the atmosphere. Would highly recommend this lovely place to anyone looking for something fun and different."

  • "I read and heard good things about Guglhupf before I booked dinner on Valentine's Day. It delivered. Good food, good atmosphere, decent service and a surprisingly nice wine/beer selection. I thought the price was pretty fair ($78 for two, including tip and alcohol for each), and the food was definitely as good as advertised. We'll be going back."

  • "Made a reservation for 4 via OpenTable at 5:30. On arrival, the hostess said the reservation was for 2, offered us 2 tables for 2. When I showed her the OpenTable email (showing reservation for 4), she went to the manager then said we could have a table for 4 but that we'd have to be gone by 7:00. When I protested that, we were finally given a table for 4 without a stopwatch ticking - just inside the outside door (cold air each time it opened) and next to the menu station (hostess leaning over one of us each time she picked one up). I don't know if it was OpenTable or Guglhulf's, but someone mismanaged the reservation. And a minor service note - one of us asked for a lemon slice with his wheat beer - the beer came, no lemon."

  • "Very disappointed. Am a regular customer at Guglhupfs, so chose it for Valentines celebration. First of all, menu on website did not align with what was served. Second nothing we had was as good as regular menu so... Don't experiment chef, bring back regular menu or just offer a few dishes for special occasions but also provide regular menu options for customers who love your food all year round otherwise."

  • "It would help if I could stop eating the bread they bring to the table!! We have eaten at Guglhupf about four times and have enjoyed each visit. The Wienerschnitzel, the baked chicken, mussels, noodles, salads, ribeye, and the pork loin (a special) are all delicious. The waiters are all very nice and offer good service. And of course, the bread.... :)"
