A word from Guardado's
Guardado's serves up authentic, flavorful dishes from Spain and Latin America, in a casual and inviting atmosphere, in the heart of Bethesda, Maryland. We now offer Brunch on Sundays

Chef Nicolas Guardado and his wife Reyna opened Guardado's Restaurant in 2007. Guardado brought with him a wealth of experience, rising through the ranks at local-area tapas restaurant Jaleo to a seasoned head chef.

Now, he is infusing that knowledge into his own restaurant, as well as adding some popular Latin American entrees and some traditional dishes from his native Salvadorean background to Guardado's extensive menu.

  • "We had tapas rather than an entree, which we have done with other area restaurants. The waitstaff were very knowledgable in their recommendations for the dishes as well as the accompanying wine. However, we were very surprised at the very small tapas. We had intended to make our meal of them but the price/portion made us hesitate to order more. It would have turned into a very expensive meal. Because we liked the food we will likely return, but instead of tapas will order an entree; these seemed more attractive."

  • "We found Guardados by accident through a Groupon purchase a couple years ago. It has continued to be one of our go-to restaurants. The restaurant is not lavishly decorated like Jaleo or La Tasca but I could care less when the food is this real (I find them slightly pretentious anyway). The service is always extremely friendly with amazing, traditional Spanish and Latin American Food. The wine list is full of Spanish wines and very reasonably priced. I'm not very fond of the sangria but that is a personal preference. Don't miss the ceviche, gambas al ajillo, and chorizo fundido."

  • "My husband and I swear we have to get here more often every time we go to Guardado's. We get wonderful service, a lively yet comfortable atmosphere, and fabulous food! The chicken thighs with olives and stuffed pimentos are old favorites. The lamb chops and asparagus specials both lovely. I tried the spinach with citrus and it was heavenly. Just what I needed for a flavorful infusion of leafy green vitamins. The family that runs this neighborhood gem deserve accolades for holding quality and service to such high standards even while getting busier and busier as the word gets out."

  • "Experience was mixed. The service was very very very slow. We were there nearly 3 hours while we waited for the dishes to come out. Even the prepared foods took time to bring out. The food however was pretty good. The food is served in small dishes in Tapas style. Most of the dishes were excellent, the Lobster soup was just okay, it was not a creamy lobster soup that I prefer. Despite being extremely slow we may give them another chance."

  • "Enjoyable dining experience. The owner/hostess is very convivial. It was quiet when we arrived but two groups of 9-10 showed up which elevated noise level; hard tile floors don't help either. Paellas seem to be the popular choice. The menu shows them for 2-3 people, but later discovered they can be down-sized and substitutions are possible. Had salad first; nice greens but it was a bit over-dressed. Not a wine snob myself so cannot comment knowledgably, but owner will provide guidance."

  • "There is a wide selection of tapas. The four of us ate a good number of them and enjoyed them all. Plantains with cheese and the dishes with chorizo stand out as being particularly good. In fact, the sauce for one dish was so good that we asked for more bread so we would be able to finish every drop. After we had asked 3 times with no bread being served, we had to ask the manager. This poor service was the only blot on an excellent meal."

  • "I love this restaurant. Great tapas at an extremely accessible price. Nico, owner and chef, comes up with delicious dishes such as: Croquetas (béchamel fritters with chicken and Serrano cheese), carne a la parilla, ceviche ( to die for), stuffed endives with orange, pinchitos grilled Spanish pork sausages with mashed potatoes) not tobe missed, and don't forget dessert. Flan and crema catalana, although this last one is not always on the menu, but ask for it, Nico might have some hidden in the kitchen..... Reyna, Nico's wife, is a fantastic host as well as their kids who also work there. I'll be back soon."

We chose food from the special menu - as they were celebrating their 7th anniversary. For $20 we each had a salad, three tapas (so we shared 6), and dessert. Everything was delicious!"

  • "Our party of 4 enjoyed a lovely dinner. 4 tapas plates, including the creamy and delicious tortola hispanola, mushrooms, tilapia and stuffed endive. All delightful and just enough to share. We ordered two different paellas: chicken and vegetables and the traditional 'homey' style. I was surprised that we finished both. The portions are huge! Service is always friendly. This is a restaurant where diners can have a conversation without shouting. We've dined at Guardados numerous times and will definitely return in the near future. They make a great martini. 3 shared a carafe of sangria, which was probably the least favorite. Drinkable, not a traditional sangria- moredry red wine with fruit. Good, not great. Overall, a fine experience."
