A word from Guardado's
Guardado's serves up authentic, flavorful dishes from Spain and Latin America, in a casual and inviting atmosphere, in the heart of Bethesda, Maryland. We now offer Brunch on Sundays

Chef Nicolas Guardado and his wife Reyna opened Guardado's Restaurant in 2007. Guardado brought with him a wealth of experience, rising through the ranks at local-area tapas restaurant Jaleo to a seasoned head chef.

Now, he is infusing that knowledge into his own restaurant, as well as adding some popular Latin American entrees and some traditional dishes from his native Salvadorean background to Guardado's extensive menu.

We found Guardados by accident through a Groupon purchase a couple years ago. It has continued to be one of our go-to restaurants. The restaurant is not lavishly decorated like Jaleo or La Tasca but I could care less when the food is this real (I find them slightly pretentious anyway). The service is always extremely friendly with amazing, traditional Spanish and Latin American Food. The wine list is full of Spanish wines and very reasonably priced. I'm not very fond of the sangria but that is a personal preference. Don't miss the ceviche, gambas al ajillo, and chorizo fundido.

We tried this place as an alternative to Jaleo, since we were looking to do tapas. I prefer to support smaller, local businesses when I can, so I was excited to try this place out. I was very disappointed that we did though. When I first arrived and waited in the bar area, the bartender was drinking. Not trying something, drinking. The food was mostly over-salted and the sangria didn't taste like anything but wine. Also, for a seemingly very authentic restaurant, I was extremely disappointed that their tres leches cake was topped with cool whip. The service was decent, but the food was average at best.

The food is amazing -- the Zarzuela de Marisco was amazing, fantastic spinach with raisins, oranges and more, terrific chicken thighs with mushrooms -- We loved it all. The only problem is that the staff was overextended on a busy Saturday night. Small complaint but a little annoying. Still they are overrun because the food is so great and the prices so reasonable. Next till will try the paella, which looked amazing but takes 35 minutes. Have to plan for that.

We had been to Guardado's a few times when short on time or not too hungry. Always enjoyed their tapas but thought of it only as a place for a light bite. This time we had full meals (not dessert - no sweet tooth) and I have to say, I could really get to love this place. I had scallops with a green pea risotto and lobster sauce, and it was seriously yummy. For wine, we don't know Riojas so asked for a recommendation - had La Primavera & it was excellent. Only slip-up was we wanted a spinach salad and got a wilted spinach tapa, but can't complain because the combination of flavors was wonderful. The place is small - we were there late on a Sunday, so it wasn't too noisy.

One couple ordered a paella with the knowledge that it takes 35 minutes to prepare. That gave us the perfect excuse for the four of us to order several tapas to fill in the waiting time. It was quite a feast. The portobello mushroom , the Spanish tortilla, stirred spinach were all quite good. Both the paella and the mariscos were worth the wait. And the waiters were friendly without being intrusive and seemed eager to please. A nice evening worth a repeat performance.

This was first time visit and I will be back! Felt like I was entering coming home to a friends house for a delicious dinner. The atmosphere, coziness, attentiveness of the all including the chef, his wife and daughter are a real treasure and treat in the often over hyped Bethesda area. I want it to go so well for the Guardado's but I would also like to keep it somewhat of a secret. That is a real compliment.

We have been going there at least monthly since the restaurant opened years ago. It is our default dining spot since we know we will always get great food, inexpensive wine and drinks and real personal service. The cerviche, mussels, papas fritas, puposas, and gambas are consistently good. Dinner for two can be intimate, but when you have a group, the beauty of a a tapas restaurant really shines, as you can sample so many different dishes.

I went during happy hour and they have a selected menu of $5 tapas as well as $4 mojitos, sangrias, etc. I was just disappointed for like two seconds because I thought all the tapas were $5 at happy hour. Despite that I still ordered what I wanted...shrimp, pimientos, papa fritas, chorizo fundido, ceviche, tortilla española, and more. All the tapas I just listed were amazing especially the tortilla española. The only tapa that I got that wasnt up to par was the calamari. I've gotten it before but this time a friend ordered it and it tasted the same way, a little chewy and tough. However, overall I love the venue and the food. I think even without happy hour the tapas are reasonably priced at $7.50 so I will go again.

I have gone to this restaurant for the food, not the ambiance. Now I won't go for either. The service was poor. The waitress took too long to put in our appetizer order and the paella came out before we were fininshed with our apps. I really don't appreciate being rushed. Then the food was just ok. The owner came over to chat us up (I guess to appease us) but did not take one dime off the bill or offer us dessert on the house. Too many good restaurants with NICE atmospheres in Bethesda to go back here.

This restaurant in Bethesda is a bit off the beaten path on Del Ray (next to Hard Times Cafe) and may not look like much but the food and service are excellent ranging from outstanding tapas to authentic paella (be prepared to wait about 30 minutes since it is made to order and excellent paella can't be rushed). One of the best parts, which anyone who frequently dines in Bethesda will appreciate, is the big empty public parking garage directly across the street with meters (only 80 cents per hour)!! Perfect for a casual dinner out if you're just looking for a great meal or with kids.

I have been a regular at Guardado's since it opened. It is family owned and operated, so sometimes the service is not as polished as in fancier restaurants, but they are very friendly and will go out of their way to provide a good experience. Mainly, the food is excellent, and consistently so. The menu has continued to expand, but no so fast that they have lost their Spanish focus. This is the best paella around, excellent tapas, and fine sangria.
